16:20 As an Asian American who's been living in Germany for six years now, I can really relate with those sentiments... Even now I never felt I really belonged. I gave it my best shot here, perhaps it's time to move on... best of luck with this new chapter in your lives!!

As a german I am sorry that you feel this way! I have the feeling that especially the older generations here are not really willing to change their mindset and are often racist. I hope things get better for you or that you will find happiness in another country.

@@lisannegudegast5667 lately the older generation is blamed for almost everything and I beg to differ! it's your upbringing and education that makes the difference. I am 60+ and I would never think like those afd members and other racists. almost all my students are muslims and we talk about differences sometimes, but there is no hate and I would not let any slurs pass in school.

@@charlotteannayup!! And that's exactly it, the same people teach their kids the same thing. I've met young people that are very close minded and act like they've never walked out of their village. Maybe back in the day you can get away with being ignorant but we live in the digital age. Google it. It's not an excuse anymore.

However, Asia will not be without its problems. I can't count the number of times I've been talked about rudely on the bus or in a restaurant because they thought I didn't speak Korean/Chinese. And I'm white, my darker-skinned friends encounter racism much more than that. At first, Korean racism doesn't seem so harsh, but the more time you spend there, the more it gets under your skin. When you get spit on at the bus stop, when your black friends are not allowed in the clubs again, or when you hear them talking behind your back again...it's not easy. I wish you a lot of strength for this! Things maybe better nowadays, but not many of my foreign friends have been able to stay in the country for a long period. The work culture is very oppressive and women are still starting from a very disadvantaged position in life. I would certainly not have a child in this country. Even my Korean partner said when we have a baby we will go back to Europe. It's funny, because I only started to appreciate Europe after I left. I believe the saying is true, that people sometimes fail to appreciate the basic things in life. But, I hope that you will still have a great moving experience. Because even though Korea has a lot of downsides, it's still a wonderful country. I just think a lot of people only want to see the bright and rosy side of things. I just noticed that people have become very idealistic about Korea lately and I just wrote this comment to shade the picture a bit. Thanks for mentioning this in the video!

At my uni there are some korean girls for exchange and they basically told us that foreigners, even other Asians like Japanese people and also other Asians still get treated badly and get excluded by Koreans. They don't belong to the Koreans and hardly find Korean friends. They also said it is not good for non Koreans to live there. Most Koreans would like them to come for vacations and spending money but then they should leave again.
@michz9304
@michz9304 Жыл бұрын
@@1Jasmin yeah I've seen that mentality which is hilarious because they don't realize they've immigrated all over the world (there's a Korea town on every continent) and they continue to do so, so it's so hypocritical!! You can't have your cake and eat it too. So stupid. I will never be able to understand that. I think it's cognitive dissonance or plain stupidity.

It's so sad to not be comfortable in the country you were born and raised in ,It makes me so mad that people have to live like this just because of others who are racist. I didn't know germany had such a big issue with racism. Where I live in Greece we have a huge problem with this as well and the saddest part is the youth is a part of it too
@lisannegudegast5667

I am from germany and in my opinion (even though its biased bc I am white) germany has a lot of problem with rasicm, homophobia and sexism especially in the older generations. The younger generations often try to correct their elders (for example we had a chocolate with marshmellow cream inside which was called N*gerkuss so n*ggerkiss and even though they since then changed the name often older people still call it that name and won't correct themselves or even be upset if we correct them). It is not always easy, but I think that the next generations become better and more aware of those problems.

When you are in Asia, you will probably be always treated as a foreigner. They will probably boxed you in as a foreigner as well if you don't speak and behave the way they do.

I'm half-Asian, half-European raised in Germany myself and I agree 💯 with Dong-in referring to German culture as 'Neidkultur' (envy culture). I'm grateful to have a successful career, to have gained 5 university degrees, to be conventionally attractive and to have a lot of beautiful-inside-and-out relatives and friends. Not once in my life have I intended to do anyone any harm at all. All my life, I've just being doing me and giving back to society. But so many times has German culture proven to me that they'll never be supportive of me and my dreams no matter how much I support them. In German, we have this word called 'gönnen'. It means being able to be happy for someone else. I sensed that NOT AT ALL in Germany, so when I was 18 I became an expat abroad and traveled the world. Now I live in Amsterdam where so many people are so loving and supportive of each other. I love witnessing people thrive, bloom and be their most authentic, healthy, successful, beautiful self under their own personal definition! And they do the same for me. Since then, my mental health has been SO much better. Growing up in Germany gave me anxiety. It's not all bad in Germany, e.g. there's a great social system, great work ethic, great engineering companies, great automotive sector etc. but they're slow with adopting a nurturing mental health culture, slow with innovation, slow with being open-minded to all things new and different etc. A lot of Germans (again, not all!) are so stuck in their comfort zone criticising things and people they're unfamiliar with...until 3 years later, they found out it's trending, that's when they adopt the trend, but then, they're often way too late to the game and behind the rest of the world. If security and predictability are important for you, Germany is your country. But if you're 'different' in any sense (non-caucasian, non-cis, non-heterosexual, not having a conventional career, mental health condition, physical disability, salary above / below average etc.), this culture is likely to make you feel discriminated, excluded and isolated and a feeling of not belonging to a community - even if you were raised there. The thing is German culture isn't even aware of it and chooses to remain ignorant towards it shifting the blame on you ('Ist doch nicht böse gemeint. Reiss dich doch mal zusammen'). That is mentally abusive and unhealthy af. If you're special and wish to experience LIFE with all its facets and colors, RUN for your life. Good on you, Farina and Dong-in. You're both too successful, kind, beautiful for a culture that largely can't be happy for you, unless they're close family and close friends. ❤🎉

All the best of luck for your move~~ I must say, after living in Korea for 3 years now, as a European, the rose tinted glasses have come off 😂 Like I still like it here, the food, the fast paced life, so many things to do etc. But being here as a tourist and actually living here is so different..After getting integrated into the society you start to see all the not so nice sides. I remember watching some videos before moving here where people were saying that they came here super excited and left with a depression. I get it now. I think the main problems one faces here are mental. Your family isn’t here, you have friends but mostly those friends are foreigners who again, mostly won’t stay here for long. They might be exchange students or short time visitors etc. If you don’t speak Korean getting Korean friends is harder. And even if you do, you realise quite fast that the people here have totally different priorities in life and you might feel like you just can’t relate to them and feel left out. If you have a boyfriend/girlfriend things might be easier but then especially if you break up you realise how much (too much) you relied on them since they kinda became your security net and family abroad. All these things you need to deal with by yourself while trying to survive everyday life in a country that will forever look at you as a foreigner first and foremost. You can never blend in, and you will eventually feel the burden of it when you feel like you can’t catch a break ever. You might stay at home for a few days and when you go back out, you feel super anxious. I have a friend who told me that at first when we met he just wanted to get to know me bc i was a foreigner but once we became friends he realised how good of a person I actually was, that I was just another human being lol. That all being said, I do love Korea. And I am not going to give up on everything I have established here. But I really want people to understand what they are getting themselves into when moving abroad, to a completely different culture. It is not all fun and games. It is everyday life, it is the same everywhere honestly. It is a routine. No one can everyday be doing some fun and glamorous stuff we see on social media. Everyone, just try make the best out of your situation and if you are feeling down, don’t give up and try to find new things to enjoy and make you happy 🤍 the little things matter the most

You guys are simply adorable 🥰thank you for being honest and open, I can relate to many of Dongin mentions of not belonging...I am eastern European, based in London and although people are not obviously rude they are not welcoming and open to different cultures either. I have been here for 12 years and I still cannot settle. Dongin is right - I never thought this way before but is true, we don't have to put up with this type of behavior and learn to deal with it. I find this video very inspiring. It is so refreshing to see a cute couple, being kind and supportive with each other. I have just subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your adventures. I'm a native Korean but moved to Austria when I was little. The racism we experienced in the 90's and 00's was overwhelming - for instance, at the age of 5, a bus driver deliberately shut the doors as I was about to jump into my mother's arms outside the bus, separating me from her. As the bus began to move, my arms were still stuck between the doors, and I screamed and cried uncontrollably while everyone, including the adults, watched quietly. My mother frantically chased the bus to the next stop to get me. There were countless other incidents that shaped my view of the world (especially the West) and me as a person. That's why I'm grateful for the rise of BTS and K-pop, knowing that many East Asian kids in Europe don't have to grow up like I did. Racism still lives on in Austria (and especially the eastern side of Europe, _yikes_ ) and for Asian males it must be worse than for me, an Asian woman - I understand why Dongin wants to leave for Korea, I feel it in my core lol. Ich wünsche euch beiden das Beste und freue mich auf die Vlogs aus Korea! ❤

I'm glad that you haven't experienced anything too bad so far Farina but I can assure you Korea can be very blatantly racist and their racism most definitely doesn't exclude white people. Plus their suicide rate should tell you something about their mentality and quality of life. I'm new to your channel first off I wanted to wish you all the best on your journey with moving to South Korea I wanted add my experience so born and raised in Germany grew up 2 hours south from you guys have been living in the US for longer than I was back in Germany. I agree with a lot you guys were saying and again I have not been in Germany in forever it seems. I did not even know what "Neidkultur" is but yea I can see that going on and people like that are just jerks by nature, When I went back to Germany after being here for 3 month I was treated crappy because of being over here and coming back, now I'm from a small village and I can't speak for the city and it's a different way of life than the city. Never have been anywhere else before I came to the U.S I was not aware what you can face, I have been through a lot of racism for the the fact that I'm German it really opened my eyes seeing how bad people treat people, I have been told to go back, I have been told that I needed to take on the citizenship ( which I would not do) before I get kicked out. Was blamed for the past , there is to much to list ,I'm planning on going back because I have never felt like I belonged here, you can adjust even fit in but you don't belong, so I know that feeling all to well. I use to tell people "Hate me for who I am not what I am" it should never matter what you are, where your from, it does not matter where you from because that is not what makes you who you are. It's a true shame how people are and act I wished one day they would wake up and stop the way they treat people because they think they can. I am in the process of learning Korean and I only watch K Dramas and listen to K Pop I have seen may similarities to South Korea how I grew up I have never found this here it makes me happy to see that people still act like that. I hope you find your happiness in South Korea you get to stay there as long as you want. Viel Glueck, gute Reise wuensche euch nur das aller aller beste.

12:15 I dunno if it's only my town, or I am really lucky BUT: - I saw few times a person getting off quite expensive car (the engine still on, door not closed), going into the bakery and coming back like several minutes later. No one even looked at this car. My dad told me that he also wittnessed sth like that -I don't really feel a need to chain my bike, - I don't know anyone who got stolen sth expensive in at least 10 years -Once a 13-15 year old boy found me in the shop and gave me back my brand new phone I left in the same shop on the shelf some time earlier. I live in Poland (so middle Europe) in the 40 thousands urban dwellers town. And fun fact, when my cousin (he lives all his life in Germany) found out that often I'm too lazy to chain properly my bike, he said I'm crazy lol And I feel sorry for your bagel Dongin

I'm sad to hear your opinion on germans and read some comments here. there are germans acting like that but I don't think they are the majority. but they totally ruined your life in a way. regarding asian hate I would not recommend to move to the usa ever, it's worse I think. In fact I'm very curious to "come along" to your journey there and how this all will be in reality. I follow koreans and germans living there bc I'm a fan of bts and I heard a lot about older koreans hating foreigners. I followed yt'ers online and saw the ridiculous prices for appartments and stuff and came to think it must be really fun there if you're rich enough. I think your journey will be very interesting to watch for me, hoping you will be showing us how it really is. good luck to you both!

I think the racism against Asians in Europe is more subtle, but I’ve heard Asian Americans say they felt less comfortable in Europe. The US is so big and diverse, you can’t really say it’s worse there.

How is it going with learning Korean? Is it hard to learn as a German person and how far have you come already? Im German too and i tried to learn Korean but it took me so long to even learn the basics.

oh no.. while i'm happy that you're pursuing your goals..but.. at this stage in your life, it's going to be extremely difficult to adjust to a new culture, language , new country.. etc. ESPECIALLY for Farina - because she's so used to the structure she has in Germany. This is different from moving from town to town in germany - where the language /culture etc are pretty much the same. I wish you luck and strength. this is going to be tough

During my stay in Seoul, I experienced more curiosity than racisom. In the worst case, it was unfairness and not aggression, nor vulgar words or calll naming. From what I could understand. But I am a white girl. Blond the first time in Seoul suburbs (Bundang) then brunette in Central Seoul Myeongdong. I could see the difference. In Bundang-gu I was very noticeable with not a lot of strangers and being blonde. I could feel being watched but more as a curiosity. I was usually then saying hello and smiling and getting the same back from the elders. Im Myeongdong I was a lot less noticeable. Everyone busy to their own. I could feel though a bit of anoyance and more like stress from some vendors, but it was more likely that they didn't want to have to speak English. Which I had avoided by keeping with basic korean words I knew and numbering by hands.

Generally in asian countries, any kind of racism is subtle, not the aggressive in your face type (or even violent) that one mostly see in western countries as a non-white, even as a dark-skinned foreigner. However, even subtle as it is, it's still racism. I honestly don't think any country is perfect and free of racists, even between ethnicities of the same race people can have horrible stereotypical things to say about each other either along cultural or religious lines.
