Why We’re Totally FERC’d: Plan for the Grid We Need or Sit in the Cold and Dark

FERC order 1920 “Building for the Future Through Electric Regional Transmission Planning and Cost Allocation” was recently released and is designed to improve transmission planning across the country. Will this order along with other reforms at the national level lead to a grid that can enable America to meet our reliability and decarbonize goals? You’ll need to watch the video to see why the answer is “maybe”

A nice review of the state of US power planning. I worked in a German power systems lab, and I remember my colleagues' reaction when I described the US method of power system planning, how its largely designed for shortish term profit, and offers limited incentives to protect against rare extremes. One of them grinned and said, "Well, the sun is shining today!"

Put High Voltage Transmission lines in Conduit under new Rail Projects. Fiber Optics can be included in the Roadbed. The heat from Resistance will create small amounts of Power along the Line, by diverting the Conduit through Small Turbines that convert the heat to electricity. There we relieved 10% of the problem.....

In my first video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaickISVptJje9Usi=cUXcSo_6g8zArsqh) I talked about a great transmission project call Soo Green, to connect wind power in Iowa to the grid in the Chicago area, burrying transmission lines along a railway right-of-way. But they are waiting for permission to connect to the grid.

@@Decarbonize11 I have noticed comments from People I know about the potential Wind Produced Generating plants that do not get adequate access to the Power Grid. In Montana the Judith Basin project is limited by the amount of connections their output is allowed to be distributed. The efforts of Jack Welsh in the late 1970's and early 1980's to limit the funding for small Wind Production industries to thrive, appeared to be intended to promote General Electric Generators to be established as the focus of wind power generation. The ability to set up Tower Construction infrastructure did take some time, as well as tooling to enable more large Generator Production to build enough to develop profits from the industry. The poor performance of GE since Welsh left the Company might be related to changing connections in Washington DC that do tend to shift the focus of funding as the money becomes limited. Policy changes do shift as funding is limited or prioritized, I have promoted the concept of buried High Voltage Transmission lines since 1996. I may have missed your previous comment about buried Power Lines.

I am glad that I don't depend on the grid. Battery backed solar is power independence.

It's great that you have that option, but not everyone has the capital or the space. For the rest of us it's critical that the grid work.

What @Decarbonize11 said. Also, not everyone grows their own food, and makes their own steel.

Whats wild is. We didn't have any of these problems with power going during the second half of the 20th century. It's almost like making conventional power plants prohibitively expensive to run was a bad thing. You can spout green energy all you want. But as we see time and time again It fails to deliever. For the north east us atleast. Every powerplant should be Nat gas. It's abundant, economical and as clean as "renewables" whenever you cost factor in the consumables of green. But common sense in the world is relatively scarce.

@@scottotterson3978 no sarcasm. We need to lower the price of oil and gas. explore and expand production. And eliminate all taxes on fuels.

@@moroteseoinage Just be prepared to deal with all of the financial impact of global warming…. Higher fire insurance cost (if you can get it), higher utilities bills for comfort cooling in the summer, immigration migration impacts, water shortages, etc. Society is way better off investing in reducing our emissions vs. paying for the impact of global warming.
