Why carry Igbo name and speak Igbo if you reject being Igbo? Me myself, my dad is from Port Harcourt. He says he is an Igbo but his sister (my aunty) rejects being Igbo. No sense at all. The truth is that the ancestors of many Port Harcourt and Delta people were Igbos. My dad told me that the reason why some South-South people reject Igbos is that, during the civil war, they were not treated well by Igbos because their Igbo accent was different. The Igbos mistook them for other tribes and sometimes beat them. From then on, all the Delta tribes rejected their Igbo history. My dad also suffered under the hands of Igbos during the war. He told me stories how the Igbo almost attacked him, but somehow he escaped. However, my father is very intelligent man, he knows his history well-well and he does not reject his history. My father doesn't even have Igbo name but knows very well that he is an Igbo thanks to his father who educated him about Igbo slavery. You see all the South-South people with English names like Morgan, Godson, Williams, they were all slaves taken to Delta and Port Harcourt areas from Eastern Nigeria. So, it's interesting for me to see people who speak Igbo and have Igbo name, and reject being Igbo.

The first man that spoke is quite pitiable. So ignorant, talking like a grown up fool. He doesn't even know history. His parents were Igbo, speaking Igbo before the white man came. Yes some Igbo were co-existing with the Bini(Edo) in and around Benin before the whites came: the kingdom and co-habitation was known as Iduu na Oba. It was when the Bini went to Yorubaland to import a ruler that the Igbo moved(shifted) to Ika(Anioma) area and settled; some even crossed river niger and settled among other Igbo in the east eg. Onitsha, Atani, Ndoni, Ekpeye, Ogba, some Ikwerre, Umuahia, Abam, Aro etc. Pls let's learn to check our history well before we talk to ridicle ourselves.

Just as a Fulani man, is a Fulanis man, whether in Chad, Nigeria or Mali. An Igbo man will only undo himself, if denies self because of mere geographical dislocation. Time and nature usually catch up with such denial error. Brothers of common ancestry can naturally disagree seriously over some issues, but are still of same surname. Change of name(s) or locations, due to circumstances, does not just change natural lineage, bloodlines or traditional heritages. I pity those who, out of selfish desires to be seen differently, greed or denials have found themselves in some unintended perpetual situations.

Many Igbos living abroad reject the deep substance of their culture and assume that by adopting western culture , western names for their children and acquiring foreign-white spouses is the road to upward mobility and being “ upper class”. They come across fake and false and are no more respected by others. They deal with split personality scenario by the externals - wearing African clothes etc . Other cultures, in the UK and US, in particular, understand and practice the duality of culture. Others( non Africans) do not reject the culture of their ancestors, while understanding the need to adopt an additional language etc to survive in the host country
@samv62695 жыл бұрын
You're probably seeing igbos abroad because before you were born the so called "foreign-white" came down to Africa without invitation to cause confusion among the people there. And igbos never leave their culture and don't need no white ass to flourish
