Valid point on slipping in the clutch. Without another technique, what you are describing will most likely happen. As a rigger who primarily rigs cruising boats for ocean sailing, we don't rely solely on rope clutches, no matter the rope construction. The modern rope clutch is a convenient tool to allow multiple controls line to reach a single winch. For highly loaded lines such as halyards, we always belay to a horn cleat below the clutch. The Sta-Set which you used is a great rope, but it can allow anywhere from 8-14" of elastic stretch into the system. Less if your ha;lyard is 2:1. Sail shape and efficiency will suffer from this. On a monohull, this will result in excess heel and earlier reefing.

@@LabMariner Been using dyneema cored lines on a Dragonfly 1200 trimaran since 2001 never heard of this happening. I think your friend got some defective line. You’re missing out. Using dyneema cored line currently for halyards on my L40 cat, for its low stretch, but using polyester cored lines for sheets.

The point you have raised is a very good one which is showing real life experiences of the ropes that the sale guys do not tell you. So thankyou very much for the tip. After watching the video I did a quick google search that dis show up there is issues and basically some manufacturers are trying to resolve the issue with dyneema rope. So for the time being if it was me i would not use rope, unless the clutch you are using is stated by the manufacturer the rope meets the specification's I would avoid using that rope. Have you any issues with the poly rope stretching under load

We ended up using a polyester core/sheath that was very similar to what was originally on the boat. Only minor wear after 3 years. We bought new clutches last year and were and are pleased with the performance with the old (and the new) polyester core/sheath lines. We heard of people having problems with the Dyneema who use the same clutches a we do - didn't make sense to try to find a work around and it definitely didn't make sense to change out our clutches😊.

Wow ! One of each, Black, Chocolate and "Yellow" Labs ! ♥️ I've got one 3 year old Black Lab and a ~4 year old Silky Terrier I just adopted 3 months ago...Lily the Lab loves sailing, but Laddy the Silky hasn't been out yet....but he's pretty cool, I think he'll love being the little bad ass guard dog while Lily snores ! 🤣

Never a dull moment with three dogs on the boat. And, I don't remember the last time I was able to sleep late - the dogs get me up at the first trace of the sun in the morning. Good luck with Laddy enjoying boat life - our three took to it very well. It's good to have at least one guard dog on your boat - ours take turns guarding our boat 🐶🐶🐶!

@@LabMariner I hadn't thought much about "guard dpg" until I watched a recent episode of "Sailing Brickhouse"...where they were almost boarded in the middle of the night ...she woke and talked them away...then the pirates went to their "buddy boat," whocwas sound asleep (drunk?) and robbed him of something like $8000 worth of stuff...everything of value, after tieing him up and supposedly threatening to kill the single-hander ! 😱 I'm SURE with both Lily and Laddy aboard, nobody's getting away with that on MY boat ! 🎯

I've always heard how much superior Dyneema was to a standard line, but that makes perfect sense for running rigging. So do you see a useful purpose on the boat for Dyneema?
@jlljjl3 жыл бұрын
Yes we use it... though we do not use dynamite in our running rigging, we do employ it in our standing rigging and other lash downs around the vessel. I keep a number of different dynema diameters in our spares locker and it's usually our primary go-to rope outside of running rigging applications.

perhaps you need to use the correct locking clutch?
@LabMariner3 жыл бұрын
That may work. But since we just changed out our clutches last year and have been very pleased with their performance it wasn't an option for us. For us, changing out our clutches entailed drilling additional holes in the fiberglass, adding additional backing under the helm, and repairing the gel coat. So, definitely not worth it for us to change out the clutches another time to try to get Dyneema lines to work.
