Dyneema and Amsteel are both brand names for UHMWPE. The UHMWPE is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. The individual fibres are very thin but incredibly long and straight and this provides UHMWPE with its strength. Lots of different rope makers(eg. Samson) buy the fibres from DSM who license dyneema, and then spin them into a braid which we know as Amsteel Blue. Amsteel blue is made from a specific type of fibre called SK75. There are other grades of dyneema too, such as sk78.

Hey everyone, James and Kimmie just left San Diego for adventures with friends and family out in the Glamis Sand Dunes. I finally got a chance to sit down and watch this live stream, so thanks to everyone for watching and especially all of you who donated to help Zingaro keep putting out great content! I saw in the live chat comments we didn't get to answer all the great questions, so feel free to message me on Facebook! BIG THANKS to Dave @Dvseire for moderating!

Darn, missed this, but what another EXCELLENT video! Seriously people, Dyneema is the bomb! And Luke (Kraken) is the guy when it comes to it and deadeyes and rigging...and I believe he needs to get a apprentice or two, after this he's going to need more people ;) And great advise about getting products from other sources than for 'marine' where they crank the price automatically, but don't agree when he says not to buy the whole roll..on the popular sizes, you can always use more, so if they give 40% or more, buy the whole roll! Again Dyneema is so unique, so great, you can use it in so many situations, and this from a guy who is not a expert..but is learning how to splice, it rocks! And a BIG shoutout to all the people who donated..and those that offered/donated camera equipment and a drone for them.

staset vs dynema.. yes the dynema doesn't stretch, but that extra shock load due to less stretch translates into all of your deck mounted hardware/blocks. Have you ever had an issue with deck hardware ripping out due to the lack of stretch/shock absorption???

I’ve heard of Dyneema synthetic rigging but what is “PBO” synthetic rigging, a different brand or a different type? What is the UV resistance and replacement schedule of synthetic standing rigging? If the mast takes a lightning ⚡️ strike does synthetic tend to catch fire 🔥? Related lightning question: How do aluminum masts versus carbon masts fare when receiving a lightning ⚡️ hit?

I would love to have a dyneema rigging, but I'm not experienced in rigging unfortunately. Do you know anybody, who can do it in the south of France or Spain? My Boat is 15mx4.75m and has a furling mast.

Here in Tampa Bay Area, the hobie cats could probably be rigged totally with Dyneema. The cables are not friendly and I think it would work great! It is a pain in the arse to pull that mast up and lock the forestay with the cable.

Super informative! How about dyneema vs steel for larger cat standing rigging, like a 50’ aluminum performance cruiser? I’m building one in Asia and have thought about going this route.

Do salt crystals accumulate in the dyneema and cause any damage to the fibers?
