If you tell Kenyans your personal life be ready for lots of pushbacks & criticism. We Africans are still deeply rooted in our communal village mindset & lifestyle comformity where everyone mind each other’s personal business. Africans due to a fiercely communal mindset will impose themselves onto what you tell em & to assess you from their own point of view. It’s hard for em to see you from your individualized perspective & preferences,especially when you open up to em. This has pros & cons I know in America your culture is pretty much wide open to talk about your private lifestyle & personal preferences even how you choose to spend your own money. I’ve lived amongst you & I can clearly see da cultural contrast. It’s better to remain as private as possible.. Nonetheless, welcome to the land of your ancestors. That’s how your ancestors viewed life from a communal prism . Individualism is a western way.

You’ve captured the essence of how communal culture shapes African perspectives beautifully! The deeply rooted “village mindset” brings both warmth and a sense of belonging, but it also keeps one locked into a narrow way of thinking. Africans often take personal stories as an invitation to share their views, and sometimes even critique what they hear. It’s a genuine expression of care but, it’s definitely something that can keep them from progressing because they aren’t listening to learn, but to teach. We aren’t asking for advice on how we should live, but do welcome constructive feedback. Our goal is to share our story as an inspiration to those looking to learn more about living in abroad. It’s really disappointing how Kenyans are in the comments trying to direct your family on how to live. We are African Americans so we love a comfortable lifestyle and there is nothing wrong with it. Whenever I relocate to Kenya, I definitely will live where on the level I’m used to in the US. Just because we relocate doesn’t mean that all of a sudden we have to totally change ourselves into a total village lifestyle. NOPE, not happening. This is why Africans that left home to the US and the UK are so stressed out because of the family back home making them feel guilty of living different. It’s sad and mentally draining to the fact so many have stopped sending money back home because of the manipulation and ridicule that comes with it. Family is sent money to build homes that never get built. Live your lives you beautiful couple and ignore the judgement. This is the reason many African Americans are being unalived in the GAMBIA because of envy and jealousy! 😢

@@alexchui3511 @alexchui3511 Thank you so much for expounding further on your thoughts. And yes, I understand completely what it is that you are saying. I also appreciate the fact that you have had the experience of having lived both at home and abroad (for five years as you stated) and have the benefit of progressing this conversation from that vantage point. My point of departure comes with your statement: “I would let this issue of rent rest since you have made your decision and it is only in the interim before you explore other alternatives.” Given the way things are going, I’m not seeing either party, Saidah and Germaine @TravelCheckIns and the alternative view group (who I’ll call Team Better Deal/TBD) changing its position on the rent issue. Knowing Kenyans on these streets, neither party will make any concessions soon. And you know what? They are both right. Saidah and Germane are spending their own money and are happy with their living arrangement, albeit interim. (They’ve been coming to Kenya since 2016 and have friends on the ground, so it's quite unfair to assume that their network of friends is not looking out for them and would leave them vulnerable to unfair pricing). Team Better Deal/TBD would love to see the couple get “good value for their money” as Saidah & Germaine enjoy their stay in Kenya. In their view, alternative living arrangements encompassing bigger quarters with a compound and a pool to boot…. would be preferable for that price. As much as I appreciate your take on Individual vs Communal values, I would presume that the Individual considerations in this case would trump the communal ones. I say this because, the social media milieu in Kenya and elsewhere is not a real place.( I would go with the opinion of friends that I’ve known for years on any given day). The question I would pose to you is: Are we (as Africans), able to find a happy medium between the individual and communal considerations? And where disagreements arise (and they will (Diaspora Wars, for example), when do we as a community call a truce?

my brother, i dont know yet what you paying for, i will wait for this video to drop, but that amount of cash you spending on rent in 10 months can buy probably the same apartment you renting in Westlands. will wait for the video to drop though, maybe am wrong with regards to what you getting for it.

It’s not just the apartment. It’s really the convenience and stress taken out of day to day things. Owning here is probably in the future but the visa situation has to come together 1st. Thanks for the feedback.

That amount in 10months cannot even get them a complete unfurnished small studio apartment in Westlands. Unless they buy off plan and it will definitely be a studio.

Guys I have really tried my best to understand how one can spend that much for a one bedroom, I really have but im still finding it really hard. Can I help you find a cheaper one and then maybe you can donate the rest to charity since you are really insistent on that budget? You can find one of about $1000 and the other 1000 you can donate and your budget can remain the same. Atleast the extra that you are being ripped off can go to a good cause and everyone can be at peace.

Korir..you don't have to understand. Just let them be! They know there are Cheaper options but that's not what they want, so stop forcing your "peasant" mentality on them. They've said MULTIPLE TIMES that's is what is working for them at this point in time..I hope this is easier for you to understand now.

@@JustJerry-x8n well, we are just saying that they insist that they have to spend 2000$ no matter the circumstance and we knw that they are being stolen from. I was just proposing that the extra that is being stolen from them go to poor deserving orphans instead. So they will be doing the Lords work as well as spending the money that they desperately want to spend

Will you stop invading peoples lives and choices? Indigenous Africans and Us as descendants come from two different paths. If we want to spend $2000 a month on an apartment for conveniences didn’t allow us to and stop questioning us. We don’t have to live a village lifestyle just because we moved to Africa. We can still live comfortable And nice lifestyle when we move to the continent. That communal thinking have you guys thinking that you could dip in everybody’s business. This is the reason why men can’t even get ahead on the continent because of this thinking and caring what everybody’s gonna say which is something that us African-Americans don’t care about. Now let us live without criticism! 🥴

America is prone to lots of natural disasters & extremes of weather , stone built homes may not be conducive to those conditions. They prefer prefab built homes with heat insulation to keep em warm during winter. Their summers are intensely hot & humid, therefore air conditioning is necessary. And also because of hurricanes & tornadoes light material homes are safer incase of destruction from the disasters. Americans value comfort & conveniences. That’s just their culture
@mandyb6414Ай бұрын
Wrong , some Americans live in high-ends hotels across the world on a short-term or long- term basis. It depends on budget. Some Americans live on cruise ships for retirement. If you can afford l, you get what works for you.

Great content, I didn't know Hyatt offers apartments on a monthly stay. How long do they allow folks to rent them? Only 1% of Kenyans can afford $2,200 a month in rent, and most of them are diasporans. The 1% that resides in Kenya won't stay here, they own many properties all over the country. $2,200 is a lot of money in a developing country, great to witness Black Americans living that life in Nairobi. I spent 8 years in Nairobi, high school & college, then left for good. Kenya can be a developed country, they have everything, but absolutely horrible leadership. ENJOY!!!
@alexchui3511Ай бұрын
Lol left for good but you are still here! I would imagine you would want nothing to do with Kenya?

You can rent them for as long as you want. I don’t think it’s a long term thing but I will say there are Americans paying the same or more at other places. Some have been here for years.

Say you could not afford and stop making it seem like there are only a few Kenyans who can afford to pay that monthly! Can you share the source of your 1per cent statistic?
