This video I will explain why Wedding DJs are so cheap and how we can fix this problem. We are ranked near the bottom of the list of wedding vendor cost and I think it's insane. Wedding DJs are an extremely important part of every wedding and the fact that we're cheaper than most other vendors is wrong, and needs to change. In this video, I explain why and how to do this! This video is a MUST WATCH for every single wedding DJ.

This is correct, issue is the undercutters man. Also its the saturation, coz of the less barriers to entry which i feel is a good thing there are a lot more DJ;s as well, well not all DJ's are equal but still.

Totally agree! I live in the capital of NY and started DJing weddings 13 years ago at $600. I didn't think anyone would ever pay more than that. I crept up to $1,000 and thought that I was getting away with murder and couldn't believe I could charge so much. Then raised to $1200, then $1500, then $2000 and now i'm currently charging $2,500 and I STILL have a packed calendar and getting such little push back. Sure! there are folks out there who say i'm too expensive and I totally understand and tell them that I just simply am not their DJ then. It's taken me years to feel confident and know my worth, but it CAN be done!

Preach it Nick! More DJs need to take note! Here in Phoenix it baffles me how many "wedding DJs" charge $600 for a full wedding DJ and MC package. Then they brag about how busy they are....Absolutely baffles me! Our average wedding package is $1500-$1700. I would rather do my 5-6 weddings a month at $1500 a pop than to do 10 weddings a month at $600.

Here's a scenario you can run by clients...If all the vendors did a no-show which absense would hurt the worst? Flowers, cakes, photo and video ghosting their duties would not actually effect the end result of the party in any way. Even if the food didn't show up, if there was booze and music, guests would order delivery and the festivities would proceed.

We are there 1.5 hrs prior to the reception and at least 45 min to an hour after the reception. Plus all the meetings, organizing all the music. A wedding is truly 20 to 35 hrs a DJ puts in.
@djrickyb
@djrickyb 2 жыл бұрын
I am all for us DJs getting more money, and continually trying to raise the bar! However, I dislike the "We spend 20+ hours on every wedding" argument as a way to legitimize our cost as a Wedding DJ. Mainly because it's an exaggeration of our time spent on 95% of the weddings that we do. Even a 7 hour long ceremony/cocktails/reception would rarely be over 17 hours of a DJ's total time involved. Even doing a wedding that is a far drive. 7 hrs, plus 2 hours for load in/set up, 1 hour for tear down. 2 hour drive each way in travel. 1 hour for finalization meeting. 1 hour for Music Download/Prep. 30 minutes to load your vehicle. Maybe 15 more minutes in phone calls or emails...That is 16.75 hrs, and that is a wedding that would be like a 80+ mile drive from your home. I think I have done 4 weddings over 21 years where I can say I pulled 20+ hrs total on doing those weddings. Most weddings are like 13 to 16 hrs of my time. A very local 4 hour reception could be under 10 hours total.

@@djrickyb i disagree with you, here in spain for example a complete wedding from ceremony to the end of dance could be at least 8 hours of "scene" work (counting 3 hours of dance), then you need to count since you leave your house to go to your warehouse to charge your car until you went back unload the car and park it if you don't have a house with parking (the most common in spain) this total could be between 15 and 20 hours the wedding day plus the time spent on calls, mettings, music preps, listings, etc... thera are couples most time consuming than others, but @Dj Mikie Mike calculate pretty well the time, and of course all of that are part of the our cost at the end, don't you think?
@19Jose91
@19Jose91 2 жыл бұрын
I’m with @@xcnevents , 7 hours a wedding? In Spain only the dancetime is like 4h average.. And the 30min load time.. I guess you don’t pack much gear and load from home, cos if you have a warehouse full of gear and do a proper production… + meeting with couples, that adds a good 4h in 2 meetings (1 to contract, 1 to review all the music structure + visit venue). Over 300 weddings here in Spain (and I do international weddings, last night just did a couple from Boston getting married here) and the avg of my time spent per wedding is surely around 20-25h.

Man your presentation on this video is spot on and keeps a person interested in the subject. I actually watched this video all the way through and it really hits home an honestly pisses me off that we don't have some way to stop Dj's that can put a file into a controller and play a song and say hey I am a affordable DJ.. That's what people think about DJ's and couldn't be so wrong., I hate to age myself but I started DJing back in the big club days of the 80's in New Orleans and as most professional DJ's know back then their was no easy way to just drop a file and press play. It was knowing your music, BPM, getting the next record out without scratching it, making sure it didn't have fingerprints all over it and taking off the record that was finishing and putting it back into the sleeve all with a large 12" record sitting in milk crates in no certain order since usually their were 2 DJ's who would work in the club so we used each others records if we had that kind of trust. It took some know how and still today a professional DJ does more then just drop the file and press play he is doing all the same things but just in a computer generated world. It separates a button pusher from a DJ but until people are more educated about DJ's it's going to hurt the one's who are truly gifted and work hard at their craft. It was very hard back then to get a job being a DJ since their was no Amazon to go to and buy a Controller and start your own company lol. Keep up the great post and who know's someone may actually one day come up with a great solution for all you younger talented professional Dj's Keep up the great work.

Great post! It has baffled me for years that we bring 15k+ worth of equipment, and DJ/setup for a wedding for 8+ hours and were pulling in around a grand. It would literally cost more to rent our equipment-- let alone have an experienced and talented expert to run the entire event. This doesn't include the organization and prep work as well.

1000% agree! I have been a producer dj for about 7 years now. I am recently applying for a loan to become a wedding and event dj! Ive been doing research and just been absolutely astonished on how LOW some people will dj a wedding for. Some even as low as $59hr.. Made me hesitant on how I could profit in the market efficiently. The reality is, anyone can bring there mackie thumps and a usb chord and play their spotify account, few can truely read a room and manuver the vibe while also presenting the vibe and wedding. I think Djs should be called something more. People hear the word dj and just immediately see a guy with a computer. We are professional mavericks of musical arts. Not a human Pandora app. Love your videos man!

Where I am there’s so many djs it’s an issue I have friends that stick to their pricing but can’t make ends up before covid because they aren’t booking. Honestly I haven’t seen the majority of brides spending the average that stats list at all, which is an issue. You go by areas you get the truth people prefer to plug in their playlist to the venue system but if there’s an MC they will consider it honestly a lot of times you can’t charge more every time that’s the issue, maybe if you make it to #1 you get the first picks an the high spenders, but in all honesty Ive worked this industry for a long time and no one cares about how great the spin is they want the laughs, the enthusiasm, not a concert not to many lights honestly. The reason for bands is the amount people that’s how people think it’s live music you can’t change psychology, technology has come a long way an many many people just don’t need anymore then that, so sell your personality sell the way you get out there dancing don’t dj solo! I clue mcs in all packages there’s a ton to do to help but no djs I know will change they don’t want to an that’s an issue you can’t make the money if you won’t meet the client average demands

Great VIDEO!!!!!! When you think about the gear we bring plus we need to pay some staff people to lug gear in and out, sometimes up and down a stairs and even sometimes under bazar circumstances sometimes. Example: When you and another DJ is loading in or out in under an hr before the event, because the cater hall as a tight turn. These are some things that the client doesn’t realize. The fact is that we do a good job we are pros at our jobs, and that we strive to give them the best experience. I have clients from past events that still thank me for my DJ skills at there event. They still speak about how good their event was and

You’re 1000% on point Nick! And I was one of those DJs that started back in the 80s. Our starting prices are over 1300 and I average at least $2200 now... ( well before the pandemic LOL) keep doing what you’re doing man you’re fucking awesome 👍👍🙌

I know too many fellow DJ's that sell themselves short because they want to load up their calendars. I'd rather do 1 wedding per month and get paid well than do 5 gigs to clear the same cash. Value your craft, your time and your investments. The clients will come.

This is one of the BEST videos of what a DJ should be charging. I have watched this video a dozen times. Every time a couple tell me I am too expensive, I watch this video and keep it moving to the next potential client. People, I don't sign all of my potential weddings, but the ones I do sign are better clients, better venues and less stress. When you have a couple paying you $600, they dog you the hell out. A couple paying you $1,500 respect you as a professional. And, why would you take $15,000 of equipment to a 6 hour event and work your ass off for $600? That makes NO sense.

First time viewer, luv u dude. Thanks for speaking the truth. Too many rookies out there giving their services away which is killing the pros. I walk into a venue with close to $8k worth of equipment and they want me to settle for $600 for a wedding. I don’t think so.

Nick, thanks for posting this! I was one of those DJ's around in the early 80's. I have watched our industry in a mad race to the bottom of the toilet bowl when it comes to pricing. I was one of 10 DJ's in the phone book in the mid 80's. If a couple wanted a DJ in my city of 250,000 (Madison, Wisconsin), they had 10 choices. We all knew not to undercut and we didn't. When computers came out, many went to Napster or bought a music loaded hard drive on line. All of a sudden, instead of a couple having 10 choices for a DJ, they had a thousand. Many were willing to work for next to nothing just to have the work. In the later 90's, the going rate for a bar DJ in my area was $450. Three decades later, the going rate is $225. So prices have been cut in half because DJ's were willing to work for less than a non livable wage. Like you said in your video, the price of everything else has gone up by 5 times as much. Everything except DJ's. The hardest part of it all is that other DJ's will fight you tooth and nail to justify why they believe a DJ shouldn't be more than what they charge. I have tried to educate others with the same message you had in this video. I hope your message gets to the people in the back row! Thanks again my friend!

That’s probably low end for a band. I do play sax in a very good wedding band and I pull in between 300-350 myself in a band that costs around $4k a wedding. I thought that was good until we shared a gig with a DJ whose pull that night was $8k. From my perspective, it isn’t that the band makes that much money, but that the DJ was making a killing for bringing less to the table than we did. Having said that, I am looking into starting to DJ for weddings because I personally want to apply my wedding experiences into doing something I’m more in control of and that I get to keep a bigger share of wallet. Looking forward to moving in that direction!

Bands have more members so it's semi understandable but in reality bands tend to take breaks, some really rock the show but many take huge breaks or drag on I was hired to play inbetween the band during their breaks and then end the night with additional dancing and I rocked it so hard I was hiredon the spot for the next weekend too. The band kept wanting to jump back on whenever they saw me pulling people to the dancefloor with my energy, mixing and selectionand at the end another Vietnamese couple that also hired a band wanted me to do the same thing for their wedding the following weekend because they saw how well the back and forth with the band and the DJ worked at that previous wedding. LOL

Nick you are 1000% correct i love this video, my packages in 95 Varied because I had multiple packages but nothing under 1500 2~ man 5 hrs and today over that. I will never claim to know it all but I love what I do and it shows to the people I meet with. It’s all in the sale but not Just your talk track, you need to make a connection with your couple be super friendly and exciting to talk to them about there wedding and like you said add in photos and videos of you doing what you love. You might not close them all but the ones you do always have friends and those are the ones that will help you find and build your market place. And if we all do this then we will be able to get to the promise price land. Just my 2 cents. Thank you Nick for doing this video
