Kaan K you also forgot the fact that despite there being no land you will somehow find massive colonies of bird’s. Who will then go onto to paint your hull white with zero respect for whatever war you’ve been in. It’s strange indeed I once saw an old captain get bombarded with the substance he survived but was traumatized for the rest of his life.

it was kinda the way of life and one of the very small opportunities people had to expand their lives through work and pay. You should read the "franklin expedition" through the arctic...that is baddass. their ship got frozen in ice and they tried to "winter out" the ice...but the ice never melted and they just sat there, for years in the middle of a Frozen ocean and one day decided to walk. They left trails and notes on their journey that were found by local eskimos. They discovered the sunken ship just last year.

After a few days at sea especially in warm regions the water would turn green so sailors would sift water through their teeth sometimes resulting in stomach upsets. Scurvy is caused by the absence of the enzyme prolyl hydroxalase which is needed for the body to produce collagen the body’s scaffolding. Humans must have evolved near fruit since most other animals can synthesise ascorbic acid. Sailors knew eating animals raw, usually ship rats, would cure scurvy. When was the last time you saw an Eskimo with fruit? They avoid scurvy by eating meat raw especially narwhal which is particularly rich in ascorbic acid but not if cooked.

Why were BRITISH sailors so unhealthy. Scurvy was almost unheard of among Spanish sailors because garlic endures well in ship storage and prevents scurvy and plenty more illnesses. Basque fishermen were fishing in Newfoundland since at least the XIV century. Elcano circumnavigated Earth for first time and they don't mention scurvy after almost the end of their travels, when they had run out of any food, including garlic. Moreover, oranges and lemons were a common staple of the Spanish Navy rations since the XVII century.

There are references to this desease in the Portuguese literature from the XVI century. Portuguese sailors from XV and XVI century often died from it. The interesting thing is that the island of Curaçao probably has its name due to scurvy. In old Portuguese language "curação" means cure, and that island was called by the Portuguese "ilha da curação" or "island of the cure" because when the sailors got there, after many months at the sea, they ate fruit and fresh food and the symptoms of the desease disappeared.
