The way the traditional number 10 role went extinct, that's what's going to happen to wingers. They'll occupy their positions alright, but just like we have seen the last of Ozil-type players, the magic of wingers will wane a die out. Every time Saka or Martinelli get the ball, they get doubled instantly. Look at Sancho and Anthony. 2 brilliant players who thrive in a system where they can express themselves with speed and flair, suddenly reduced to nothing in the premier league. Great players, but the last of a dying breed.

Neither of those went extinct. Both number 10's and wingers still exist. Odegaard is a number 10, Bellingham is a number 10, de Bruyne is a number 10... for God's sake, Messi is the best number 10 this game has seen since Pelé and he was playing in Europe just the other day. The same goes for wingers: Mitoma is a winger, Rafa Leão is a Winger, Vini Jr is a winger... The thing is: as football changes, these roles change as well. Avaliable space is ever reduced by the compactness of teams. The midfield is as crowded as ever, no one has time and space to spare anymore. So the number 10's have either moved to the less crowded wide areas or started playing from deeper positions. They still exist, but they must be more intense without the ball, thrive in overcrowded areas and, specially, counterpress. Inverted wingers like Robben and Ribery where actually the result of such changes: many players that in other times would be number 10s or second strikers in a scheme with two forwards became wingers because the wide areas are less crowded, so it ended up being the place for some of the best playmakers of the 2010's. Back in the 1990's and early 2000's inverted wingers were very rare. Teams either had pure wingers like Giggs in Man Utd or they had no wingers at all in formations like the 4-4-2 diamond. In that sense, not even Robben is a "real" winger. He's a modern winger since he is a wide playmaker playing of the opposite side of his dominant foot. "Real" wingers were pacey players that played on their dominant foot side and would cross dozens of balls into the box for a pair of strikers.

Imo this is just nostalgia bias, I can list just as many names of modern footballers that have this 'magic'. The maajor difference I would say is how structured the game is now compared to back then, theres much less possibility for randomness and chaos in today's game. Take setpieces like corners for instance, some of the most chaotic moments in a football match has been given enough structure that teams are consistent and constant threats without relying on insane setpiece talent and 7 foot players. There's beauty in the structure too and the way teams play these days and the fact that there aren't a whole host of standouut players is a testament to the general increase in player's abilty and talent. Most players are already at a high enough standard that it is more special when you see these 'magic' players

to answer you guys that didn't understand what this guy said, Showboating is a tactic consisting of a player doing certain skills (such as juggles, freestyles, etc) or just generally annoying their marker to waste time and change the rhytm of the game, attracting defenders and other players and stressing them, because of that, the team gets an advantage because defenders usually foul the player who's showboating because it's disrespectful. In some cases, it's a foul but at some times it's not a foul. But it should be a guaranteed card, like a handball. He also meant that the defenders were accusing the flairy wingers of showboating, probably, but yeah, i don't know. Wingers are also not the same because football's been becoming more and more physical, with players putting extreme pressure on wingers and even fouling then. I kinda disagree with what you're saying. I would argue that modern football is more militarized and hence scripted attacks are the most common ways that teams score goals, this means that manages get players who do what they're told more often and less often the skillful winger who does what comes to him at the moment. All the "real wingers" you mentioned play in systems that suit them. Leao plays for a team which primarily counter attack, madrid and Napoli are heavily relational and hence attackers who are just good attackers thrive in that system etc. But in general teams care about sticking to the script or the tactic which often results in wingers having to be very efficient when they get the ball. Often "efficiency" is boring

Ronaldo for United was a “Winger” run down the line with the ball and crosses it, that’s a “proper winger” players like Vini, Robben, Doku although play wide cuts in and try to score or score, they will be classed as forwards because of their shooting rather than crossing. So technically real wingers are rare because advanced wide players at top level don’t cross, that’s left to fullbacks now. If you cut inside from the wing you are forward essentially (not a striker). Last winger I can think of was Douglas Costa for Bayern and Juve

i actually think that are the same amount of good wingers and it actually might be one of the position who didnt changed that much in the last decade, cb, cm, fullbacks and strikers seem to evolve way much more than the winger position, when the classick 10 almost extinct(no more players like platini or del piero or even kaka), but wingers are still pretty simillar(we more examples like chiesa or saint maximin and solomon who are pretty classic wingers)

Defensive systems are better but the defenders themselves not really. Teams use to sport two good defenders and the rest of the team could go forward, not anymore. The quality of the dribbling is lacking. The finishing is even worse yet the whole team needs to defend.

I respect your opinion but i disagree completely. Defense as a whole unit maybe became more coordinated but defenders as individuals did not become better in defensive skills. 90s and 00s defenders were better than present ones. Attackers are much more protected now, so defenders hesitate to tackle them and play aggressive. In Serie A in 90s you could not dribble more than 10 meters without being tackled down. Perfect example is Gvardiol chasing Messi at WC 2022 without making any stronger contact or trying to take him down. I'm not saying that he does not know to tackle but he is just afraid to do that because of attacker's protection. Old Nesta for example marked and play better against Messi than all of the defenders in their prime in the last 10 years! Another perfect example is FRIENDLY match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in 1996. when whole Atletico team gone brutal on Ronaldo. You can check it yourself if you don't believe me. So no, your hypothesis about low goal ratio doesn't match the truth - teams score much more goals now . Ronaldo from '96, Messi from '12 and C. Ronaldo from '13 would demolish Premier League now and score 50 goals per season!

Football is played so safe now, defenders job is to jockey an opponent until they have nowhere to go but backwards. Defenders mark territory more than they mark their opponent, which has lead to embarrassing clips of defenders backing off for too long and conceding. The Gvardiol analogy is a good one. He chased Messi around trying his hardest to not commit a foul and got repeatedly skinned and conceded a goal in the process. Had he just played more aggressively, he would've either won the ball or conceded a free kick and yellow card in a semi dangerous position. These outcomes are much better than what actually happened.

The argument you are making doesn't work because while defensive systems have gotten better, the wingers still have enough chances in a game where they have space and time. Also, their skill is just not the same, thier first touch is not the same, skill moves are lacking. Kvara, Vini and Leao are very good tho, I would add Rodrygo ( altough he has an off season so far ), they can be as good as wingers used to be. Also, a lot of wingers in the past dealt with heavy defensive systems too, as they were playing for big teams and the smaller ones used to defend with all their playes.

i feel like this video isnt accurate enough. from the first minute you said modern systems are too advance which isnt true. firstly ever system you see today is made by Valeriy Lobanovskiy and refined by Ragnick. thats not the point though. point is, the one thing football can never out scheme or out play is a winger running and beating a man. outside scoring, that will always be the most valuable skill because its unbeatable and causes the defence issues when done right. the wingers arent as talented as they were in previous generations. same with strikers. all the wingers you named wont be top 10 20 years ago.. Defensive systems haven't developed,, you don't see Mourinho's 2010 Inter or Diego Simeonie's 2014 Atletico Madrid type teams that could literally keep a clean sheet against a Front three of Pele, Maradona and R9. Those two were pioneers of Ultra Defensive systems but in today's game their tactics have become useless besides, that era had some of thee best defenders one even won a Balon do'r. Attacking systems have developed so why don't we see Arjen Robben, Bale, Ronaldinho type Wingers?? It's simple, the football being played today rejects flair, Freedom, expression i mean look at Grealish, once an elegant dribbler reduced to a basic winger... Real Madrid is one of the few teams that promote vintage football and that's why they keep defying odds... even Brazil has ditched it's philosophies of Joga Bonito in fact, Diniz is trying to re-introduce it but they're failing miserably.
