If a woman enters, just for spite, she will be asked to leave, failing to do so all doors will be shut, no monk will interact with her, but she will not be harassed nor hurt in any way. Most likely the Police will escort her out. Its their land, their rules.

The prohibition of women presence on Mount Athos is accepted by the European Union. It is an exeption to the freedom of movenment and settlement added in the agreement with which Greece entered the European Union. There is another exeption to the freedom of settlement. No one is allowed to settle in the Alan islands of Finland, so as to preserve their Viking tradition and culture. So, both these exeptions are part of the communaut aquee, or whatever they called it, of the European Union. Since July 1974, turkish barbarian troops invaded and occupy Kypros (Chypre, Zypern). In May 2004, Kypros was to enter the European Union. The alleys of turkey tried to help turkey by imposing an agreement, according to which the freedom of movenment, settlement and owning a property was to be restricted for the occupied area of Kypros. This was the Cofi Anan plan of the United Nations, which in practice was to impose an apparthide. The people of Kypros rejected the plan.

A very cool fact about this place is that it's basically the last remaining area of the Roman Empire. The first of the 21 monasteries there was founded by Emperor Nicephoros Phocas and he asked for a cell to be kept for him but he never made it there since he was murdered. The door of this monastery, Great Lavra, was taken from the emir's palace at Crete, which Nicephoros reconquered, and can still be seen there today. Almost all, if not all, of the monasteries there were built while the area was still part of the Roman Empire and the way of life there has barely changed since then.

Fun fact: in the 1300's the Byzantine Emperor hired the Great Catalan Company to fight the Turks in Anatolia. They ran afoul of each other and the Emperor had the mercenary leader killed. In response, the company occupied parts of Greece for 80 years (Duchies of Athens and Neopatria). As a result of this occupation, the monks of Mt. Athos also banned Catalan citizens from entering. The European Court of Human Rights doesn't actually have any association with the EU and is a body separate from it. Its rulings are generally non-binding (for most countries in Europe who haven't put its sovereignty into law). To have the ban overturned, there would need to be a judgement by the European Court of Justice, which is itself part of the EU and whose rulings are binding.

perhaps, but since Mount Athos is autonomous from Greece and not a member of EU, ECJ can't do anything about it, because even if they tell Greeks to lift the ban, they can't legally do it

@@GTAandApplechannel well, I mean, they are monks, and being honest, you would rather move this whole peninsula with ypur bare hands than make them do something that goes against their beliefs. And I think it's ok, they are after all a sovereign state of sorts, and even if they weren't, it's technically their property, and they can do whatever they want with it

And even that doesn't work because even though the ECJ likes to claim primacy over all EU law, as it so happens, constitutional law outranks treaties in most countries. The EU can't override a constitution unless the constitution specifically allows for it. Best they can do is fine a country for not having a compliant constitution.

Everything else aside, the '4 day work week' in iceland is kind of a myth. They cut each day down a couple hours for an extremely limited number of employees. We don't all work 4 days a week.
