Another fact that many of the comments already mentioned: A monk named Mihailo Tolotos (1856-1938) is believed to be the only monk that had never seen a woman in his entire life. His mother died when he was born, and he was brought up in the monestary in Mount Athos. He also had never seen an automobile, a movie, or an airplane. After he died, the monastery gave him a special burial ceremony because they believed he was the only man in the world never to see a woman.

They have a pharmacy in their "capital" wich is the administrative monastery, and a basic medical facility. For serious/emergency stuff they need to either go on mainland or in the case of the monks that will not leave the site sometimes a full medical team can be arranged by the country that hosts the monastery(they belong to countries like Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Armenia etc). Medical devices need to be flown in usually if they are too large to transport by pickuptruks/4x4 sprinters wich is the transportation on the island, they have very few(7 years ago) paved roads, most are(were) dirt roads and they are very rough, you cannot travel them even with a crossover, most of the cars are pickups or serious offroaders like patros/landcruisers.

My grandmother and my aunt (2yo at the time) along several other people, men and women, were granted refuge there for several days while fleeing from the Germans during WWII. The monks are strict but not unreasonable or cruel. If a woman enters, just for spite, she will be asked to leave, failing to do so all doors will be shut, no monk will interact with her, but she will not be harassed nor hurt in any way. Most likely the Police will escort her out. Its their land, their rules.

The prohibition of women presence on Mount Athos is accepted by the European Union. It is an exeption to the freedom of movenment and settlement added in the agreement with which Greece entered the European Union. There is another exeption to the freedom of settlement. No one is allowed to settle in the Alan islands of Finland, so as to preserve their Viking tradition and culture. So, both these exeptions are part of the communaut aquee, or whatever they called it, of the European Union. Since July 1974, turkish barbarian troops invaded and occupy Kypros (Chypre, Zypern). In May 2004, Kypros was to enter the European Union. The alleys of turkey tried to help turkey by imposing an agreement, according to which the freedom of movenment, settlement and owning a property was to be restricted for the occupied area of Kypros. This was the Cofi Anan plan of the United Nations, which in practice was to impose an apparthide. The people of Kypros rejected the plan.

A very cool fact about this place is that it's basically the last remaining area of the Roman Empire. The first of the 21 monasteries there was founded by Emperor Nicephoros Phocas and he asked for a cell to be kept for him but he never made it there since he was murdered. The door of this monastery, Great Lavra, was taken from the emir's palace at Crete, which Nicephoros reconquered, and can still be seen there today. Almost all, if not all, of the monasteries there were built while the area was still part of the Roman Empire and the way of life there has barely changed since then.

Been there! Wonderful place to visit, actually--if you're into monks and Christian liturgies and all sorts of historical religious artifacts. I've even walked along the literal 20 meter concrete law. That said, there are plenty of female animals living there, including cats--they tend to be wild, but domestic honeybees do exist in large numbers, as do plenty of female goats and hens. Some monasteries don't keep female animals, but that's not generically the rule.

My uncle, as well as my 33yo psychoanalyst friend, spent 6 months each in Άγιο Όρος (Mount Athos), they both had the time of their life. Visitors need to pull their weight around by helping the monks by cooking, cleaning, working in the garden etc. Also, monks are really awesome cooks and hold very deep philosophical conversations with the monks every afternoon over bread and wine (my friend went there basically for that very reason). Lastly, despite there not being road access to Mount Athos, there are cars in the peninsula with unique autonomous license plates.

Fun fact: in the 1300's the Byzantine Emperor hired the Great Catalan Company to fight the Turks in Anatolia. They ran afoul of each other and the Emperor had the mercenary leader killed. In response, the company occupied parts of Greece for 80 years (Duchies of Athens and Neopatria). As a result of this occupation, the monks of Mt. Athos also banned Catalan citizens from entering. This ban was lifted only in 2000.

They were abandoned by some Turks who promised to take them to Italy, they are from the Republic of Moldova, not in the European Union, they paid 2 guides who promised to take them to work in Italy with a boat, of course illegal . When they got there, it was quickly rumored that two women entered the land of Athos and all the monastery closed the gates until the police took them out. I don't know what happened to them but they thought they were in Italy.

I don't think taking it up to the ECtHR would work because traditionally the ECtHR does often take into consideration even controversial cultural nuances, i'd say the CJEU would be more likely, purely on a discrimination basis, to overturn it but they would be hesitant to go against an explicit exception in the treaties, they usually only do that for very big exceptions that have far-reaching consequences.

Since the exceptions are in the treaties, they literally can't overturn any of it. They can only disapprove and ask for the treaties to be amended and that's it.

The European Court of Human Rights doesn't actually have any association with the EU and is a body separate from it. Its rulings are generally non-binding (for most countries in Europe who haven't put its sovereignty into law). To have the ban overturned, there would need to be a judgement by the European Court of Justice, which is itself part of the EU and whose rulings are binding.
@nothernstar2576

And even that doesn't work because even though the ECJ likes to claim primacy over all EU law, as it so happens, constitutional law outranks treaties in most countries. The EU can't override a constitution unless the constitution specifically allows for it. Best they can do is fine a country for not having a compliant constitution.
