Only seen the training of the dance once before, never knew women didn't preform this..Glad to see it's now open to everyone. Beautiful dance no matter who does it.

This is very good to see! This Sifu should be commended for being open minded and supportive of females. Just FYI, actually there was a female lion dance team in Vancouver, Canada almost 30 years ago…

This may be just the case in Asia, but there have been female lion dancers in the US for several decades now, from what I've seen. I've even trained many myself, and I still see coed lion dancing from many of the local kung fu schools every year.

I've never noticed that some of them need to jump onto the thighs of the person behind them to raise the head. That definitely takes practice!

@Jason Pei they don’t do it once, they do it a bunch of times, in sync with their partner they can’t see, during a long dance that is very physical, and often takes place on obstacles like benches or posts (above water in some places) in order to make it more impressive. It absolutely *is* hard, that’s the whole point. A whole lot of people on earth are not blessed with the physicality or time to practice this, and even if they had the inclination, half of them were banned until recently.

Man, I hated doing the tail. Just watching this made me exhausted. It's probably more tiring in the back because you have to constantly squat.

Wow, very educational. I also did not know that women could not be lion dancers. It’s cool to get an inside peek to their training, awesome video!

I think its because traditionally, women where not allowed to touch or do lion dance because tradition dictates that women have there mensturation, which is unclean for the lion dance

wow i'm impress that so many part of the world choose to say woman menstruations are unclean so they should not do this or that. What a stupid world

I wish my parents enrolled me in kung fu. I’m sure one of my passions would have been competitive lion dancing on jongs/high poles, if given the opportunity Lion dancers made me really happy as a kid! When I was in pre-school, I would put my naptime blanket on top of my head and back, and pretend to be a lion dancer. 😆 … but I think it’s far too late for me to play catch up, since I’ve heard most people take 10 years to get to where they are. I’m turning 20 this month, and I’m not very athletic. Even if my parents did enroll me in a martial arts group as a kid (there are many in my city), I doubt they’d let girls try the jongs. Girls are allowed to do lion dances, of course, but I’ve never seen any of the martial arts organizations let girls perform jong routines. No use dwelling on what could’ve been, though. I’m glad the idea of letting girls lion dance is becoming more widely accepted now. Maybe one day, there will be a womens’ section in the Genting World Lion Dance Competition, too. One can only hope!

It is not too late to try if you have passion and enthusiasm. I started at 31, and still occasionally switch in for a show at 40. For a few years I was the only female lion head in my city. It’s incredibly hard work but so much fun.

Imho . . . I think you should give it a try, specially if you are previously into sports or activities that require flexibility.

it's awesome women are doing lion dance. It's sad women were excluded for hundreds of years. There's a lot of things I love about chinese culture, but growing up there were a lot of things that felt wrong. Good to see progress.

女人舞狮是没有错的不过你身为南狮师一代宗师,那你知不知道南狮文化是没有磁性只有雄性的。请你尊重下南獅文化吧。请不要把南狮子的根拷到乱78 糟。
