It'd be interesting to see how the 123-Ignition has failed, may be a fun idea to have a cross-channel thing by sending one of the dead units to BigClive, as he enjoys taking such electronical things to bits, and you never know, might even find a fix for it too... :)

@@olik136 In general, an engine is the worst place for electronics to be attached onto as it introduces vibrations, heat and contamination if there are any oil leaks, the other issue is lead-free solder, that stuff is just dreadful for such environments too as that'll fracture and cause parts to become disconnected, so could just be a case of needing a reflow with juicy lead-based solder to revive it, but that's just at a guess without seeing it inside...
@olik136

@@twocvbloke sure sure- but on the other hand the standard ignition system has never failed me- you have to change some parts from time to time- but the failure mode is often just "runs a bit worse". Now that might be different on a big V8 with 300hp, but on all my cars I had zero problems with the up to 62 year old tech. But I might just have gotten lucky.

Yep. Been there, done that with a Triumph 2500S and Accuspark / Powerspark EI module, so you have my empathy there, Ian. The first time it died, it would cut out temporarily and as I slowed down with no engine running, suddenly come back to life for 5 mins or so.....and then wash, rinse, repeat. Caused a huge belch of flame out the exhaust accompanied by a loud bang when she did it going down a hill! That first EI unit lasted 3000km, so I replaced the coil with a new one when I picked up the new EI unit.....which lasted about half that distance and just quit and would not work again. So, I bought a Lumenition one - a well respected brand - that lasted around 7000km. At this point, I looked at the money I had spent on EI units versus the cost of points and how many sets of the latter I could have purchased with the same amount of cash and decided to go back to 'old school' tech. However, it was not long after this that I discovered how bad the modern condensers are and having had issues with both burnt points and weak spark, I gave in and bought a cheap Chinesium knockoff of the Lucas 45D6 distributor, set it up with a relay so it got a constant 12v from the battery when the key was on and she's been right as rain ever since - 25000km and counting. I do in fact keep the old dizzy in the boot of the car, set up with a new set of points, just in case the EI decides to let go somewhere inconvenient though. Even after all this time, I'm still not sold on their reliability eh!

I'm sure when the first fan fell off it sounded like you said "Fanny's off" . I remember a mate who had a CV2 when I lived in Scotland, he tried to get max power from his. I remember we did away with the fan and hooked up an electric one and controlled it from a switch in the car. We eventually hooked up a temp sensor and wired it through that so it would work automatically, however it could still be controlled manually. I'm not a fan of cutting blades off as it can cause an imbalance. But going electric might be an option for you. How about stripping that original engine and doing a rebuilt, get her bored out too. That would make great viewing. Love the tinkering videos best..

Congrats on the successful repair job! I think the "wasted spark" ignition was used on quite a few twins; may also explain why Harleys (and other motorbike twins) occasionally pop out the exhaust on startup. I wonder if "ThunderHead289's" "Carb Cheater" would work on the carburetors in Elly and Giselle? Looks like an interesting way to monitor fuel/air mixture, and as an aid to adjustments...Video quality w/ the new phone-cam is excellent; I did notice a very slight lag in the sound vs. the picture, though...Well-done on the tinkering!

So nice to have tinkering, especially successful tinkering that identified and fixed the problem by a thoroughly rational process. And the accompanying anecdotes were great, too--I love the thought of Elly turning into a fire-breathing dragon (or rather, fire-farting dragon--I've never seen one of those at a Chinese New Year celebration, and I've seen some good dragons). On your new phone: I haven't checked the comments, but I'm sure you've been told that the sound track is out of sync: I first noticed when you were giving the socket subtle persuasion with the hammer, which makes a good diegetic clapper board. But also out of sync when you're talking on camera. The image quality is good--stabilisation satisfactory, the zoom is a good addition, and detail good (splendid definition of the hair on your arm in the close up). But since one of your motives for changing from the DJI was a lack of oomph in the pictures (I thought the grey Honda on a grey day was rather moody, but probably not good for the algorithm), you might want to tweak the colour, which is quite subdued. I don't know what you've got on the Samsung, and it might be different for video than for stills, but a full set of controls will give you a slider for colour saturation; I think you need to push that up a bit, because the colours are quite muted even to my taste, and I like things quiet. There's also another control you sometimes get called "Vividness" or something like that; I don't understand it, but I think it increases differentiation between colours locally or summat--anyway, it gets you a little more punch in the colour without the overall effect getting absurd. It is such a relief to see tinkering on Elly, where everything is visible and most of it accessible, and the relationships between the parts are clear. It must be a relief for you, too: I sometimes look at you struggling with a turbo diesel with fuel injection plumbing and air plumbing and complex electricals cramming the engine compartment, and I frankly boggle.
