10:44 the reason why fish will breed with a waterchange with slightly lower temperature, is because in the wild, when it rains it brings all kinds of little insects and live foods in the water, meaning the fish know it's time to breed because there is an abundance of food for their fry to eat. So that's why fish are more likely to breed with a cold waterchange.

Not just that. During dry season fish often get stuck in drying pools, dead arms of rivers for example, often a death sentence for the fish inside these pools. All the fish are closer to their natural predators. Then the rainy season starts, bringing lots of free safe space. Piranha swim in the flooded villages without biting anybody (unlike when stressed). Schools of tetras are darting in the forest vegetation and thick layer of leaves, further away from the predators. The eggs are spread further away, with less fish to find them. Similar with cichlids finding good spot.
@jtkeepingfish2 күн бұрын
@@PaulZyCZ yeah good point too, but that scenario is not something that is replicated in a glass box. But I think that with feeding lots of high quality live/frozen foods, you can get any fish conditioned and ready to spawn!

More hearty foods like brine or daphnia or live feeding and feeding more frequently will allow them to feel they have enough food to breed and raise young safely, also keeping high water quality will encourage this as well. They have to feel safe and well fed and see a surplus in food to breed. Danger will make them less likely to breed in my experience

If the dither fish idea doesn't work and you think spawning behavior was triggered by a threat reaction, how about putting a tank right up close that contains larger, more threatening fish...so they can be seen but don't pose any actual danger to any babies?
@moonray12762 күн бұрын
Lighting is a bit bright. Great for plants, not so much for the mood of the fish. Also when you do a water change, use colder water to recreate rainfall sensation. Need the tank temp to be a little higher than average but the short refreshing chill of a water change works well. Triggers lots of fish to breed. I have some cichlids (kribs) on about 100 three week old fry. (I can already hear hundreds of keyboards clicking - Blah blah, kribs aren't acaras - doesn't matter). Worry less about the aquascape and more about fish comfort. I use really efficient USB powered lights on a five gallon tank. Not very bright, It's not bare. Little bit of wood with java moss wrapped around it, some flat stones, little bit of java fern. Sponge filter that won't eat the fry if they do happen. No need for dither fish, they will still stress parents on fry. Adding the floaters is good from the point of view that it will provide some shade.

Might be worth reducing the temperature of the water you use to refill on the water change. I've had success with forcing spawning that way as it apparently simulates the slightly colder rainfall which

I see MD using tap water for water changes, but I’m curious how since the stones in the tank might affect the water parameters, especially the pH. When I added Seriyu stone to my 40-gallon tank, the pH went from 6.0ppm to 7.2ppm and after a water change, it stressed my fish and killed my shrimp. i'm also aware some fish can be more sensitive than others. I plan to remove the stones, but how does MD manage to do water changes with tap water when his rocks alter the tank’s pH?

heavy feeding, heavy water changes and they just will. IF you caught a pair. I suspect the amount of food they were getting, and water quality was better in the bigger tank. we have a very productive breeding fish room, and it's the reverse of your style on some tanks. 60%+ water changes like clockwork, at least once a week, on targeted tanks it's twice a week. Every tank gets daily live food. and at least once weekly frozen on top of normal foods. In the reduced water volume, it's not as easy to load up the female for breeding, without affecting water quality. So lots of food, lots of water. they're also a young pair. When fully grown, spawns will be more frequent.
