Great job compiling all the seperate tech vidoes into one simple troubleshooting guide!! As for my best time, was out on my formula 272 so twin inboard and after hitting a wave i lost starboard engine so limped it a mile to the sandbar so kids could swim while i trouble shooted. Turned out kill switch corroded internally and failed so bypassed killswitch and started right up 🙌 #WONTSTART

My problem was just bad gas and a gummed up carb. I had that carb completely apart twice. I ended up taking it in. All they did was a sonic clean on the carb and ran like new after that. Keep up the good work on these videos. I learned something every time!#WONTSTART

#wontstart I had just bought a Mako Proskiff with a 60hp mercury. The second time I took it out it just quit running and left me stranded on a sandbar for several hours. I went through everything I could think of. It would pull start but as soon as you’d put it in gear it would die. I had checked the prob and knew it wasn’t fowled. After a while I finally found a second fuse relay hidden behind a panel and it had a blown fuse. Swapped it out because I always carry spares and never had another problem. Love your videos! #WONTSTART I'm an upcoming mechanic and a few years ago I bought a 23 seafox for $500.. got it running, fuel looked good in a jar, so I took it out...as soon as I got the thing on plane it SHUT DOWN! so now I'm in the middle of the channel...I unhook my fuel line , I no lie pumped 2 gallons of water out of my fuel tank..got towed in... the water was trapped in a corner or something till it got on plane and got sucked up the pick up.. you live you learn. good vids brother.

#wontstart Had a motor that ran well and after a while would cut out. Cleaned the fuel system from start to finish and had similar issues afterwards. I watched one of your videos where you commented on the fuel bulb pointing upwards on the outlet side to discover that mine was pointing downwards. Shortened the fuel line to make sure the buld faces upwards and since then, no issues. Thanks for the awesome videos!

while cruising offshore one engine stop checked the battery, cables, and starter expending time when the actual culprit was a loose plug connecting ignition. We should have start looking into the basis and continuous process of elimination from there not jumping into conclusion. Luckily, we had a second engine. Thank you for your videos! #wontstart

Had a bad tank of fuel that made the motor very hard to start when cold. Finally figured it out and got the bad fuel out. I no longer store gas in the boat tank for winter now. Even with stabilizer in it, still went bad. #wontstart

#wontstart My old mercury 2 stroke would not start 20 miles out. We called Sea Tow and got aprice on towing. After talking to them I dug deeper into the problem and found on top of the motor a old glass fuse that was corroded into. So with not much to work with chopped it into and twisted it together ,taped it up . Holy crap it started while we were on the phone with sea tow..day saved thanks for your videos, they are great

Had a boat that suddenly kept falling on its face and dying while under way. few cranks and it sprung back to life until crossing a boat wake and it died. cranking while quickly drifting out of the channel with nothing happening. Squeezed the fuel bulb it was firm, Pulled the cowl off and crank again, Nothing. Wiggle around some of the harness wires and boom it fires up. not knowing the problem quickly pull back into the channel and back under way. another set of boat wakes kill the motor. Do the same and if fires back up. this time I shake the harness while its idling to find a wire rubbing and grounding out, that was killing the ignition. I find your videos very helpful #wontstart

I n my assistant were working on a Yamaha 55hp 2 stroke which weren't used for couple of years. He was on the helm and I was near the engine checking if everything was ok once it starts. I gave him a shout to crank the engine as the helm was located way forward of the boat in the cabin. But the engine would crank but wouldn't start. I removed the spark plugs which weren't in good condition due to long time storage and there was no spark. So I fitted new ones and told him to crank again just to see no spark again. I disconnected all the wiring connectors cleaned them and refitted still no spark. Later I disconnected the stop switch wire and there was spark. So I went to the helm and checked the remote. I was surprised to see that my assistant hadn't connected the lanyard kill switch key the whole time and I was messing up for almost an hour with everything at the engine which wouldn't do any good. Basic knowledge is very important . #wontstart

Interesting one Lazy priming bulb on a direct injected Evinrude - went through the filters, lines, etc - decided to check the screen on the inlet in the fuel tank......pulled it out and found a kinked inlet tube......Apparently, someone installed an inlet tube that was the wrong size - too long - it hit the bottom of the tank and kinked......restricting fuel flow......

Grew up running older boats throughout the summer. There were, and still are, always various issues that came up. Starting problems from bad plugs to fuel line issues to bad batteries. #wontstart

So I bought a boat that had been sitting for a few years per the owner because of a no start issue. 1000 bucks for a 20' sea-sport with Johnson ( which went away in a repower) and trailer. Well long short the fuel was very low octane with tons of breakdown sediment. New tank, gas and some carb work and viola, shes started!!!!! #wontstart

My 2 stroke 5 hp mercury had a cracked top gasket once, it was a bit tricky to find the fault because it only bogged when the engine was hot. Replaced the gasket and it was fixed. #wontstart

Yep the 2 stroke motors give us some trouble to start mostly because the spark plugs are full with fuel but after some time it will start. #wontstart

tried all morning trying to start motor, and after chasing the problem in a hot summer day, the throttle position sensor was out of alignment. Disconnected cable, adjusted and good to go after that. #wontstart

If a verado cranks that long without starting you can pretty much bet on the crank sensor, had quite a few go bad at my dealership

Hello, Great video as always. I am in need of a little help. i have a 1996 115hp johnson and my VRO pump is bad. Do you know what pump i can use if i get rid of the Vro system and pre mix my fuel.

You can try and just disconnect the oil tank, the ground going to the oil tank, and he plug that comes from the VRO pump and just premix the fuel. But some models won't let you do that. I'm not that familiar with which do and don't put the engine in RPM reduction when doing this. If yours puts you into RPM reduction after disconnecting everything, you will need to mess with the wiring to make the engine think that it has full oil :)

A year ago this month, we went to go use our boat. We turned the key and sparks would fly from where the starter meets the flywheel. Our mechanic said it was a bad starter and replaced it with a new one. He replaced it for free because he admitted to crimping the hoses on the thermostat and breaking the o rings during the 100 hour service a few weeks earlier. #WONTSTART

We had a really nutcracker of a problem in one of my 250 EFI Mercs. One day during a trip it decided it wasn't going to turn on any more. It would crank, it would spark, it would pump the fuel alright. Nothing seemed to be obviously wrong but it just wouldn't start. The next day we were about to call it quits on the trip and look for a way to take the boat out and return by land. Just for kicks, we cranked it in the morning and, lo and behold, it started. Being the daring dumbasses that we are, we decided to continue the trip as if nothing had happened. This was a 7-day river rally in the Venezuelan rainforest, mind you. Four days later, we were chilling in Pto Carreño Colombia, just by the Venezuelan border and went on to start the engine for an early morning departure for Pto Ayacucho. It didn't start. Same issue as before. It stranded us in Colombia for 2 days and then just like that one miracle, it came back on the third day. We raced downriver now to catch up with the rest of the boats in the rally and eventually dropped out due to a broken prop shaft. We went on to use the boat recreationally at sea for about 6 months without a single failure. One day it decided not to start again and stranded us at the beach. Luckily we had enough rum for the slow, single engine drive back. We tried changing all of the electronics to the other engine to no avail. The problem kept popping up at random intervals until a year later we were back in the Orinoco river and the whole thing seized up causing some pretty cool acrobatics. We took the engine apart and found that the motor seized due to a failed crankshaft top bearing. As we were putting it together a bulb lit up and the truth dawned on us..... the bearing had been weak for a long time and, possibly due to temperature fluctuations, caused the cranking to be a little less RPM than usual! It was just so subtle that we never noticed the difference. With this theory we put the motor back together and sailed on with the optimist outlook that we would never see the random failure to start again. We never did.

Boosted engine beat up spark plugs with there high cylinder pressures. ALWAYS change Verado plugs at the 300 hour service or sooner.

I had a neighbor take his boat with him on vacation and couldn’t get it started all week. It was cranking but wouldn’t fire up. And he didn’t have cell service to call for help. When he came back after his vacation I looked at it and found the safety land yard was pulled. Causing it to #wontstart safe to say a few bad words were said lol

Hey. Love the channel. Do you have a way to get the broken drive shaft out the crank. ? Mine is broken and the teethe stayed at the top. Lower unit seems fine. I just need to get this broken drive shaft out.

If you can't get it out with a magnet, you'll have to pull the powerhead :/ but one or the other is most likely destroyed, the powerhead or the lower. I've only seen that happen twice and the lower unit locked up both times, you'll probably need a lower unit

@@BornAgainBoating it shifts in neutral and forward and reverse fine. Motor still runs fine. The shaft is just snapped. I was just curious how to get that spline out. It's right at the top. I'll be taking the lower unit apart and changing the pump and seals and the shaft and make sure the coward and rever gear are good. The pinion and the dog. It seems to shift fine and turn the shaft and it goes in both forward and reverse ok. I'm hoping for the best but if I need to rebuild it I will. I was in forward pushing a tree. Right when I I thought it was going to hit the prop I threw it in neutral. I think the engine was still spinning fast enough when the prop hit it snapped the splines off. I was 35 Mike's from the landing and no signal. Was a bad. Had two kids and my wife. But we made it home. We where in the swamp. I'll keep you updated. I may have got lucky with the power head but we'll see. Thanks for the answer back.

#wontstart I always had tough luck with mercury's when i was a kid, so 80's 20hp mercs - and it could be anything that would stop it from starting. damp coils, too much oil, choked for a pull more than i should have... i went through a ton of spark plugs on those. It would seem that the lower one would always , always foul.

#wontstart have a bad electric choke on my Johnson 200. If you pump the primer bulb and crank it fires right up. Only does it when it hasn't ran in a while. Previous owner always used starting fluid
