I don't know if this is standard practice, but I got sent into ICU when I had so bad kidney infection my body started shutting down. I spent less than 72 hours in the ICU, but they kept me there hooked on machines while waiting to get all the tests and images done in order to make the decision if they needed to remove my kidneys. After that they trasferred me to IC, and then to regular beds - and when I got home I still was treated with IV antibiotics as an outpatient. I was just wondering if it is normal to be in the ICU in situations like these, where the reasoning is " a high risk of shock reaction and monitoring for emergency surgery " ? If it matters I live in Europe with essentially free healthcare. Ps, I love how informative your videos are!

Are internal medicine icu specialists good at handling ventilators as the anaesthesia icu specialist? If not we internal med icu can learn that as well right during critical care fellowship?

Internal medicine residents learn about the vent during their training as well. We rotated through the ICU during residency. In critical care fellowship, we learned basic and advanced ventilator modes and settings. It doesn't matter what your background is going into the fellowship program, by the time you are finished you will know how to manage the ventilator. Thank you for watching. Yes! Sepsis is a very common ICU diagnosis. Sepsis can become septic shock - which would require life support. Thank for your question!
