I love discussions about why someone sticks to a character, and having world tour and arcade mode help to feed into that reason will always be a bonus to that discussion. Hearing your reasons for sticking to Marisa made me think about why I switched to my current main: Ed. I started with Ken, but I didn't have that emotional connection to him as a character. Yeah, he's more jaded from becoming a HoboKen, but he doesn't feel like me. Ed is some weirdo who was created to do as some asshole wanted him to. He wasn't given a whole lot time in terms of thinking about what he wants. The earliest we see him is with Balrog, and obviously he's not a good guy lol. But Balrog was still a father figure. He taught Ed how to survive and how to box, and he kind of gave him a more punkish attitude I guess. Now Ed is fighting against Bison and trying to get others out of Bison's control. Make it so everyone has a better future so they don't have to live in pain (I'm assuming psycho power is painful) and suffering that comes from a dictator creating you as a weapon. Originally, I wanted to play Ed because he had Nero grab powers from Devil May Cry (hence the profile name lol), but he just clicks with me in a still Nero-like way, but different. He's got that edgy outer shell that seems like he's just pissed off all the time, but genuinely cares about other people and their futures. He's also a boxer, which had nothing to do with anything until I played him and discovered that BOXING IS AMAZING. OH. GOD, BOXING IS NUTS. I've seen Dudley before, but something about Ed's movement - even after throwing out a 5mp and he does a peak-a-boo guard for the recovery, or how his arm sways after he throws out a flicker normal - that just makes me think he's the fucking coolest. He's the reason I got into boxing, he's (and Hajime no Ippo) the reason I will continue to get into boxing, and I can't let myself drop him for a character that doesn't make me want to pick up a combat sport like this character. He is just my fucking SHIT, and I don't care how much work I have to put into this character. Every loss or win I get with him is an inch towards a better, stronger future for both of us.

I couldn't have summed it up better myself. I kinda needed to hear this tbh. When I play SF6, I often get discouraged at losses, feeling like I'll never be good at the game, like I'll never make it to master, etc. It's hard to want to carry on playing when your in-game street cred is draining away with every match you lose, every combo you fumble, and every easy win you choked out into a loss. I'm a Marisa main with Ryu secondary (because my true main is my girl Sakura), but I never really internalized the journey/growth-oriented mindset that both of these characters share. This video kinda reminded me why I picked these characters in the first place, so thank you for that! Overall great video, I just followed you on twitch and I'm stoked to see more content!

Terry Bogard is that character for me. I first played him in smash ultimate, had no idea who he was but thought he looked and sounded cool, he also felt so damn good to play too. Eventually that would lead me to learning about his backstory and the kof games(most notably kof xiii) which would not only solidify my love for the character but fighting games as a whole and I’ve been dedicated to this character ever since. My favorite thing about him is that he is a martial artist but he doesn’t really dress like say ryu or kazuya rather in street clothes which to me its like him having his own style i think that’s what I relate to the most. I’m mad hyped about him coming to sf6 and that new fatal fury game coming out he’s such an important character to me

I love this video!! I’m super interested in the way that fighting games convey narrative and character through their aesthetics and gameplay, and what better way to see that than to hear from someone who really clicks with a certain character! I’ve always thought Marisa was really cool-her win pose is spectacular, and getting told “now you know history” by a roman when she punches you through a wall is awesome-but it’s so much better to hear about her from someone who’s gone to depths with her. It’s super interesting, watching this it clicked for me that moreso than other fighting games, SF’s characters especially in 6 are concerned with different approaches to combat and improvement. Everyone’s got their own philosophy that meshes super well with their playstyle. Keep up the great work!

Anime pro wrestling and bodybuilding are just a few of my favorite things and Marisa represents all of that. Me and my wife agree there is a lack of feminine muscular women in fighting games. My favorite character of all time is Street Fighter is R mika. I saw Street Fighter 6 for the first time and immediately knew Marisa was the character to take to the top and be the best at. I'm really glad that Luke's voice actor just said what everybody was thinking. I play Marisa for a number of reasons. 1. I think she is pretty cool. 2. She is not a shoto, which is good because the other two characters I play are shotos. I really don't want to be like a one-trick pony in this game. 3. I like to even out my gameplay experience by playing both high and low tier characters usually. That way I get the lovely experience of getting to play Akuma and being ridiculously powerful and also playing a character like Marisa where I actually have to think a little bit lol. 4. She's pretty easy to understand in terms of inputs. So many characters in Street Fighter have inputs that are just beyond me (probably because I'm traditionally a Mortal Kombat guy). 5. It's not common to actually find large muscular women in media in general, much less in fighting games. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Sheeva. And she is a weird case because she is a Shokan, everybody in that particular species is gigantic. So it's cool to see someone like that who is just a human. I think the only thing I would change about her other than giving her some buffs, is I feel like she could use a cool Zangief style, 360 command grab. I don't know why but I've always felt like that fits her. Also maybe some more air options. There's an interesting tidbit I think involving Akuma and her. During the end screen text whenever a fight is over, Akuma typically insults and belittles everybody he beats. The only exceptions are Ryu, who he expects more of. And Marisa, who he actually calls impressive.

Glad you have decided to stick with fighting games despite the extreme pressure that can come with such a thing at a competitive level. I think what turns a lot of people away from fighting games is the fact that there is an extreme buy in. That buy in being four things: 1. You will lose inevitably. 2. Losing will always suck. 3. There are always going to be characters that are inherently better than others. 4. When you lose, it is all your fault. This isn't like League of Legends or CSGO where you can blame your team. And that's not even to speak of all the learning that you've got to do. So I'm always glad to see new people get into the hobby despite the barriers to entry.

I absolutely LOVED absolutely EVERYTHING about this video! Super fun to get all of the perspective on why Marisa is more than just her tool kit to you, and some great tie ins to the under-rated arcade mode content. I have really similar feelings about playing Cammy, and you summed it up perfectly with she's "more than just her gameplay." Part of it is her being the first character in a fighting game I ever put real time into, which also brings with it the experiences & accomplishment I feel like I've "shared" with the character (I literally got a hand tattoo of her beret to memorialize going to my first Evo in 2023). The other part of it is her story, which I feel deeply connected to - Cammy is someone who was taken advantage of, abused, but still came out the other side believing that people are more good than bad & fighting to protect others from going through the same things. Whenever I'm feeling particularly bad, that sentiment really keep me going forward. Thanks for sharing & starting this great convo!

I been playing street fighter since I had a Sega Genesis in the early 1990s. I have always loved the game despite never being very good at it. SF6 has been a fantastic addiction to the series and I really like how characters such as Marisa and Manon have ventured beyond the common tropes for female characters in fighting games. Marisa is a fantastic character and I hope to see her stick around in future SF games. I just hope they move her story forward a bit at some point. Or maybe Udon will include her in one of their comics. We can only hope.

I didn't touch SF6 since the Bison patch and went back to Marisa (cause I played her for the first full year). I like her gameplay more than her character design and dislike her costumes unfortunately, but that's just personal preference. However, I love her background and everything based around ancien rome / greece, and her personality is amazing! In term of gameplay big woman does big damage I love it. While she is charactarized as easy, I think she doesn't play the same game as the cast. Playing with armor and without any reversal can be daunting. It is far from being my first fighting game but it's definitely the first time I play a character of this archetype. At this point I'm blabbing But man, after watching your video I realised that Marisa give some damn good life advices! Good video and hope you'll play and enjoy Marisa for a long time!!

i love the everything you go into regarding why and how your love for Marisa is cemented so not just in her gameplay, but her character and philosophy too - for me, that’s what SF is all about! it’s pretty funny, because my lifelong main is not in SF6 (yet?!) and i almost can’t help but wonder if that’s why i'd been feeling a sort of restless disconnect with a game i love so dearly. i genuinely consider SF6 to be one of the best entry in the series considering its young age, but still...the feeling of not having a main is pretty impactful! the folks at Capcom are just so damn good at making you connect to a character and i think that’s what i love about the series the most - everyone’s got someone they can relate to and for good reason. I love Marisa. I typically never main female characters, not because they're females, but because i always want to play huge/strong characters. The second I saw Marisa, i knew i would main her. I just love her character design and move set. I can feel all of her punches. She definitely struggles in SF6. She was pretty good until they took away her oki. Her damage is being matched by other characters at this point, so her being able to dish out a lot of damage isn't really a unique advantage. With that being said, using her scutum is so fun. I love seeing people her frustrated by it.

so, I'm a master modern Marisa main, also got nerve DMG in my hands makes consecutive fast precise movements difficult, or at least takes more practice. I feel the same way. I think it's important to note Marisa is really only a sketchy pick at the highest level. Though playing bison now , another very strong modern chaR imo. it's made her weakness more apparent Personally don't really care about the deep lore and never thought about the queer coded things. But I do like her personality!

I've been playing fighting games since World Warrior on SNES, and through every SF, I've always felt a character crisis. But when SF6 dropped, I (as someone who was dismayed about SF6 because I wanted Marvel 5) was instantly drawn to Marisa. She's so cool! I'm a cis-hetero black man, but always thought the queer representation was dope aspect of her design, and that she represents an archetype rarely explored in SF in her goal of melting your health bar. I'm a firm believer in playing the characters you have fun playing. Something I keep telling the homie who been begging me to play a top 5 character. Haha.

She's effectively the game's only tank type character. Which is my play style in every fighter. Some characters might have similar gameplans but don't have the disrespect factor of an armored play style. I mained aganos and tusk in killer instinct, played hulk in marvel 3, Abigail in sfv and nemesis in mvci. This type of character is just my specialty. Personally, I think she is really good in a lot of mus but what big bird said is valid is it's more the tournament setting and the volatile nature of sf6 currently. If the game gets slowed down later on her play style would probably be a lot stronger.

She's still my favorite character on the roster, but taking time to play someone with an OD reversal has been like drowning and finally getting a breath of fresh air. Holy shit it's been so nice. I'm praying for the next patch to be kinder to our muscle mommy. I miss the big swings and Enfold.

It's mindset i think. I love Marisa. Her mixup and damage is always fun. But if i was playing for money i would definitely pick Akuma or someone strong. But for online with no stakes I'll do whatever. Like i am gonna get E Honda to Masters next time i rank up. Because he can win even being low tier. He just have to play perfectly and punish people for not playing perfectly. Better characters just have more room for error since they have options and more abilities to make comeback or keep pressure on their side

Yeah, sounds a lot like what Big Bird has said about Marisa. It's not that she can't win---it's that her ability to do so is volatile and prone to swinging hard towards a perfect KO either for or against her favor.

"A woman like me is literally in the game" is not something that any amount of direct or indirect nerfs can offset. She's your waifu. I've been playing fighting games actively for about 16 years. Back in the day, legendary player Justin Wong publicly committed to using Iron Fist in the then-new Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. As an Iron Fist enthusiast, I was happy not just to see that char in the game, but also to have the reassurance that one of the best in the business is gonna make sure that he's competitively viable, no matter what. Well, Justin Wong changed his tune within about 3 or 4 weeks, saying he couldn't figure out how to make him work. Iron Fist has some unique quirks that make him very difficult to perform well with, so he effectively disappeared from the competitive scene, except for Weeberman. I ran into the same issues as everyone else interested in him, and as the power level of other characters went up over time, Iron Fist fell by the wayside for me. As a Marisa main, I saw how her power diminished from season 1. Before, I could work hard and earn a checkmate setup if I landed a level 3 against an opponent that was burned out and meterless. But they took that away from her. And they also gave everyone a reversal that removed the pressure she used to be able to force in certain matchups. Not to mention the fact that her armor generally loses to many high tier chars' party starter button, c.MK. Due to that, and Marisa being dropped by effectively every top player who used her, I decided to start playing other chars and damn if it isn't stark just how much less work they need to put in to perform consistently. Marisa is not very far from the bottom on anyone's season 2 tier list. I think in this video you said Ken is your secondary char, and I think that's about as good a mindset as one can have about char selection in a competitive context. For my first few years playing the game Under Night, I mained Akatsuki, a char with a slow fireball and very short range on most of his attacks, who was a struggle as a human guest char in a game full of demon lords. At a certain point, I got fed up, and decided to pick up a pocket Gordeau, aka the top 3 or top 1 char at the time. Any set where I started to get salty about not performing, well, I could just switch over to the "pocket" top tier and teach my opponent who was actually better at the game. Being stuck with an underperforming character is probably a recipe for quitting a fighting game. Having a top tier alternate gives you the benefit of winning when you're ready to, and cashing in on an investment in a character that will likely reap buffs over the lifetime of patches for the game. If not in season 2, then maybe 3, 4, or 5. Look how Aki players are eating now compared to when they were struggling at first. Now, a lot of top players would put Aki in the top 5. Similar for Gief.

I main Marissa because I'm just a casual that likes to have fun. Plus shes just a cool character. It feels really good to make 1hp comebacks. Shes the closest thing to Alex from SF5. I can have fun playing really smart and taking my time to approach and i can also have just as much fun going full ape mode and just hitting all the buttons, so her high risk high reward play just works for me. Plus did i mention shes just a cool character?

@@UltraSnance I actually disagree on this point because so much of Marisa’s neutral game is structured around Gladius. She plays neutral very differently from most of the cast, which is I think a big part of why I’m finding it difficult to learn a Shoto now as my secondary.

Season 2 is fantastically balanced like unprecedented levels of well balanced, but Marissa and Manon are unfortunately in this”functionally suboptimal” category. But if you’re not a pro going after paychecks, play what you like! For reference I’m in pretty much the same boat with my main Juri who’s just like me frfr (she’s even presented to be queer too!), does this mean I should work on being a less toxic person yes sure but for now lemme have my fun in SF. She is also directly design influenced by Jolyne from Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure whom I am quite a big fan of considering yknow she’s my pfp on this KZbin channel and all. Also a big thing for me in fighting game mains is a speedy character which she clearly is. In this case Juri happens to have been fairly strong in season 1 and top tier as heck in season 2, but to be honest that’s not really relevant for my level of play I’m not going after paychecks or anything

The new characters in 6 are wildly popular for character reasons and it's amazing to see how people want them to be good because they want them back in future games. Marisa and Manon are wonderful characters, so it's a shame that high tournament lvl scuttlebutt makes them seem bad to play as. But Jamie has a gameplan that'll be tournament safe and Lily may just always be too straight forward, but wow do people like the ideas and designs. They all feel so modern, fit with the classics well, and it's nice that Guilty Gear isn't the only mostly well known fighting game with openly queer characters anymore.
