Thanks Matt and the Hagerty team for visiting our shop and trying out one of our freshly built Tesla Model 3s! Our mission is to make the most fun EV driving experience money can buy and we're so happy you shared our story. We love winning races at the track but what Matt did here is what we live for...building amazing daily driven Teslas that can blast through the canyons as fast as many supercars with nimble handling, can set 1:52 (soon to be faster) laps at Buttonwillow and can kick on autopilot on the way back home in traffic before plugging in overnight to charge and do it again tomorrow. For those curious, a couple of notes on this build: -The 315/30R18 Yokohama A052 tires are an optional street legal race spec wheel/tire package. For our complete car clients some opt for this and then for a set of our 20" wheels with street tires (we partner with Michelin and use Pilot Sport 4S for street tires typically 255 or 265 wide and Yokohama for the A052's for street legal track tires typically 295 or 315 wide). -You'll see a continued improvement in fit/finish from us. This car uses prototype early gen items that we are still dialing in hardware and final install details for. It also didnt pass our paint job requirements but there was not enough time for filming for a respray. Our main focus was driving dynamics on a fresh build for this video (completed just days before). Fit/finish details will continue to be dialed in for our builds as we chase perfection step by step.

For me the critical sticking point is drop in range. I take my fiesta up a canyon I drop from 35mpg to 18mpg. The saving aspect is a fuel station which I timed it at less than 3 minutes start to fill. Thats quick! That can be the difference between being on time for dinner and someone being worried that im not home yet. Next point is the tires. The A052 in this video is $400+ PER TYRE. That means 1600 for a set without fitting and tax for 315/30R18. These A052 are known to give ridiculous grip but wear poorly even on my fiesta (fiesta size is 205/40R17 at $200+ per tyre) and they wear out fully in under 4k miles on my fiesta which is a weekend only car. Thats the point. Tires are bloody expensive especially when doing performance camber settings. That is why I would never ever own a heavy car. I am tired of tyre wear and heat cycling tires prematurely. Lighter cars just consume less fuel brakes and tires. Less money being spent on consumables means more driving enjoyment at a track.

All do respect, your Fiesta sounds like a fun car. But this performs beyond BMW M3 territory. With higher performance comes higher costs. For now sure, because it's the vast majority of cars that exist. But in terms of Physical Capabilities, what you can physically do to the cars. BEVs are far more effective at being modified. You can do utterly insane wrong things like powering a Tesla Drive Unit with Chevy LG Chem batteries. This means you have less proprietary physical parts (e.g. that bog standard tesla branded oil filter) and requires less specialized physical tools and big equipment. Yes range for extreme use is still a problem, I think Endurance Racing is just not realistic. But Crossing Continents & 100 Mile Track Session is already doable. You assumption were not wrong just outdated and not aware of current state.

Its just how electric motors work. The faster you are going, the more power the motors need to maintain that speed (let alone accelerate). Unlike a gas car that has a nifty thing called a transmission. EV fan boys are literally stupid and don't realize you cannot compare the two. One is a PC that has been in development for a century, and one is a smartphone, something trendy and only a decade old.

They are in no way different to a PC other then being smaller, and can do the same things.

The faster you go in a ICE vehicle, the less power from the engine is converting to grip on the road and/or is being lost as heat. The vid's point here is about the limited charge a vehicle can hold, nothing to do with the actual electric motor, which if anything, has an edge since it can regenerate power from braking.

This won't ever happen. Tech moves on and there are no "classics" with tech. No one cares of about vintage computers and phones, this will be the same. First year model s is already tanking to $30k, if you catch a battery problem that is a $18k bill.
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 10 ай бұрын
@@Magnus-pm7ic$18k is less than what an S2000 or Porsche engine costs. I think the problem with collectability for Teslas is they're still making the same cars, just iterated on. But Tesla Roadsters are legit collectable because they're getting old enough, and you can't go buy the same car new. The first Model S is still on the down swing of the price curve. Nothing is hot at 10 years except the unobtainium from Ferrari or Porsche. I'm not sure the Model S will ever be truly collectable though, but for the same reason nobody is shelling out big money for G1 Explorers. It's just too common, and while innovative in its time, the formula is being copied furiously. But I'm sure at some point there will be people nostalgic for the early fake grille.

Making EVs more fun and tuneable is the future you say? I truly hope so. But I worry though setting priority on self-driving, infotainment and other gimmicks has been the not only the focus of EV manufacturers but also the more traditional car companies. There are less and less cars that appeal to car geeks. For that matter - at least in Europe - it seems that driving and cars in general are considered uncool and undesirable by the public. Politics and all its regulations reflect that. I truly hope the future is bright for cars and enthusiast. I'm sure EVs can deliver the fizz and emotion we car guys all love. I'm just not so sure it'll happen.

The big manufacturers are only focusing on mass market products, at least for now. I think the smaller manufacturers will be the ones to make it happen. Due to spacious packaging and extreme compatibility. You can literally power a Tesla Drive Units with Chevy LG Chem batteries. Even Tesla Drive Units has become the cliche overused Motor Swap like LS Swap. BEVs will introduce a new golden age of back yard engineered cars with far less proprietary physical parts. It also requires less expensive large equipment, basically a private garage is all you need. Sadly your erroneous assumption is based on ignorance of such old practices existing and what Politics and Marketing programs you to know. Interesting. This seems to perpetuate several common misperceptions based on my experience with my Tesla M3P. First, weight. It's only slightly heavier than comparable models of BMW, Audi, and pony cars. Second, my 2021 model exhibits none of the quality fit-and-finish issues that are so often referred to. And third, the OEM M3P compares very favorably with comparable performance sedans in handling quality. The main focus for me has been tires/wheels and particularly brakes - like most OEM sedans. In the case of EVs losing range for better performance, I beg to differ. What you are looking at is using up space for additional equipment, either the mainstream-ish path of using software gimmicking that communicate with a dozen other things that is the popular route or add some diy hardware jerry rigging to make something really cool.

Gasoline is a very energy-dense fuel. So you can burn a lot of kW of energy inefficiently and still have fuel left to get to the gas station. EVs get somewhat equal range by running way more efficiently - so when tasked, they deplete their range that much more.

Tesla specifically does not have the infrastructure to build an affordable quality product . It rely's on subsidies from various governments around the world . Companies like Toyota and Nissan are way ahead on the curve of innovation and they are not putting all their apples in EV's or this type of EV tech. Toyota is developing the solid state battery and has extensive investments in hydrogen fuel cell technology presently selling viable products without tax dollars and can fit a body panel properly . Nissan has an entirely different electric drive train it is developing while still using a combustion engine as the primary power source (An old idea being modernized) As two examples of how Tesla is a joke for rich people to indulge in at the expense of hard working tax payers .I wish the company would die the death it deserves . I also find it humorous that these review guys never factor in quality when reviewing . It's all about the bling .

@Tron-Jockey

Tesla's latest battery chemistry is claimed to be good for between 1000 and 2000 "full' charge cycles depending upon how it treated. If the car is rated for 300 miles per charge and lasts for 1500 full charge cycles then you're looking at an average of 300 x 1500 = 450,000 miles of life. 2000 cycles would be for more or less ideal conditions and 1000 cycles would be for a battery that has seen a lot of hard use (racing, extended periods of high speed driving, frequent use of supercharging, and doing any of these during a 115F Arizona summer). So 250,000- 300,000 miles might be realistic for a battery that's had a tough life while 500,000 miles would be for one that's been babied. Replacement costs are a bit of a moving target. Per kWh costs have dropped quite a bit but I think they're still above $140 per kWh making their 75kWh battery pack about $10,500 before labor. Elon has stated that Tesla will be pushing for a per kWh cost of $75 or less within a few years. Refurbished packs cost a lot less. Battery costs have been steadily dropping every year so by the time you need one they'll likely be under $5000.

Tesla has some leeway. You can do quite insane stuff like Frankenstein multiple crashed cars together as long the software understands the parts. The only problem is when the software not understanding how to command & control a modification you changed on the car. In places where you can translate, mask or make an equivalent device logic. The modification should work and Tesla car's OS is more adaptable than you thought. Sadly this is more of a basic computer science problem rather than some warranty protection.
