Are you guys all allergic to safety glasses? After suffering an eye injury myself because of poor judgment, I just cringe with Matt using a cutoff wheel without eye protection. Was the earmuffs so he couldn’t hear us all yelling at him? Love your channel and all that you do.

I'm no mechanic but I thought the same thing as these folks! Matt, on the trail you worry about everyone's safety but in the garage you set a bad example, especially for Liz, as she was off grinding metal with air tools without eye protection & you were even cutting metal without eye protection. What could happen is very painful and could even mean loosing an eye.

Long wheel base is a catch 22. It definitely helps on climbs if you have the clearance. The biggest drawback of a suburban is the rear that over hangs the axle. Too long and you hurt turning, but they got rear steering for that. If there is anything I learned from watching Matt's off road Recovery. Is that there is definitely a time and place to specialize vehicles! Build it for where you wheel, and how you wheel! If it's a daily driver, changes everything too.

@@mobius-1503 it depends on the content, the quality of the content, how much, how many angles or cards, how many interruptions or frame cuts/perspectives you want. And then even then it’s gonna depend heavily on the editors Pc wether it’s SSD or not and how fast the SSD or M.2 is rated for moving and editing everything then would come the internet reliability and speed aspect..

You definitely don't want to have your radiator hose higher than the radiator. If you do you'll have air in the hose and won't be able to bleed the air out.

Even just being under a car wear eye protection because rust in the eyes ain't fun ask me how I know. And getting a socket thrown into your face sucks as well. Eye protection is so cheap too and you can never be too safe

Hey Matt, great videos. You might run into overheating issues because of the top heater hose having a "hump". You can get an air pocket which can cause heating issues. I recommend cutting it so it's horizontal directly into the top of the rad. Keep up the good work.

I was thinking the same thing. If the radiator cap isn't the highest point in your coolant loop, there will always be problems with air in the system.

Considering how awkward it is to get to the radiator cap it might not be a bad idea to put a radiator cap sleeve in the middle of the upper hose then it will end up literally right under the platform and it will be the highest point and easy access with just a hinged flap on the platform floor. Could kill two birds with one stone.

HEY MATT!!! Radiator filler should be highest point in your cooling system…right now you have an air trap the way that hose goes up and back down to the engine. Just rotate the hose so it isn’t above the filler and you may avoid some issues getting your system purged!

I agree I almost went blind when I was like 4 or 5 due to watching my brother testing a battery with a hydrometer and acid flew into my eyes luckily we washed them out quick enough and I didn't go blind

Some home fabricated rock rails, a front locker or LSD, a small lift and slightly larger wheels and that would be enough 4 wheel drive for most people.

Being a GMT400 fan and enthusiast, I’m surprised that IFS stayed together. I ran my 1990 3/4 P/U for awhile with a 4” lift and 35s. She didn’t stay together long. Went to a Dana 60 out of a Super Duty and coil overs. Getting ready to swap out the Detroit lockers to air lockers. Great platforms with some simple and affordable upgrades. The GMT400 is such a tough platform with a massive amount of options to build it in any direction.

One of my employees was using a grinder and got a tiny piece of metal lodged in his eyeball and had to go to the emergency room. Please use safety glasses people. I cringe every time I see any of you using these tools without them. You'll wish you had been using them when you lose an eye.

Suburbans have large tires stock, they are 30 inch tires if I remember correctly. You can run up to 33's if your OK with a bit of rubbing. The large tire makes them rather capable for how simple they seem. They are heavy as shit though, which is what stopped it from climbing that hill.

There are actually quite a few Suburbans that can take on the tougher trails, just not enough of them to be noticed in the overall off-road world, unless one happens to be running in the group. Their abilities tends to be underestimated by most, until they see one in action.

That was pretty impressive for a burban. The locker made huge difference. Needs a little lift for sure and a limited slip front would be a huge difference. But very impressive for sure. I think the wheel base helps a bit too. Although in most cases it's a disadvantage. Seemed to work good here though.

Many years ago, I ran my '73 Chevy K-20 in sand and mud. Detroit locker, 4.11, four speed. It went where long wheel base wasn't suppose to go. It sometimes went where Jeeps couldn't. That 'burban has much better weight distribution than a pickup. A posi in the front sure couldn't hurt. A lift kit would work wonders and get rid of those skimpy running boards. Put some strong tubing boards in their place to protect sheet metal. I'd also go for strong bumpers front and rear. I kinda wonder about a skid plate on the rear differential and probably a pretty stout one on the fuel tank.

This video was just great , I grew up with a 93 gmc suburban with 4x4 and had a 5.7 in it great vehicle we bought it almost brand new we used to take it with our 19 foot Searay to lake Mead and Laughlin all the the time we put 455k miles into ours replaced the transmission twice went through 3 rear ends and just loved our submarine that's what my dad called ours. This video shows how great the old Chevys are. Very impressed

3 things I got from this video. 1) It's amazing that they sell "Matt's Offroad Recovery Yellow" in a spray can. That's when you know you've made it big. 2) That suburban proves that semi-stock vehicles should be given more credit and you may not need to soup up your vehicle to get to most places (well, except for straight up a rock slab). 3) The way to overcome that same rock slab is to ensure you have a Wendy's Frostie with you.

Exactly. Until this channel and other offroad channels, I thought I had to put a 10in lift and have big ass 37s or more to get anywhere. Found that simple rock sliders, good diffs, and 35s have gotten me most anywhere.

That’s a heavy truck, I drove my grandpop’s ‘94 Suburban for a year out in Cali and I loved it (he bought it new the year I was born!). Great vehicle but couldn’t imagine taking it on a trail 😂

Lizzy, when working with any kind of tool which spins make sure you wear eye protection. You only have two and they must last your life time. Many people have lost their eye site due to NOT USING SAFETY protection. This applies to the guys as well, especially when using a cut-off wheel.

Bend hose down slightly. Fixed. Can't cut those hoses they are formed that way and have a spring reinforcement through them. Probably leak at the ends if you try.

Though I did hear a U-joint start to splinter at the end of that last climb I can't believe Rudy didn't break the rearend in cinnamon during those three violent hopping attacks!!!! (He definitely knows how to get a vehicle to do things beyond it's expected capacity.) Once he's done with the performance upgrades I hope a rollcage is going to be next because he'll be able to get into alot more hazardous situations than before.

2:37 Don't you want the highest point in the cooling system to be the radiator cap, not in the radiator hose? Looks like a trap for air. I'd suggest shortening or bending the hose accordingly.

I came here to say the same, to run the hose higher than the radiator cap youd need to install a bleed valve in the hose at its highest point

Love you're guys work and ambition. I worry about you cutting panels out with no safety glasses. Doesnt take much to put safety glasses on just the same it doesn't take much to blind you. My grandpa lost his vision in one eye from a sliver of metal. Might be annoying at times but safe work is a practice every worker or maker should do at every level of skill.

Owned four 4x4's and without a doubt the single best upgrade is the rear locker. It opens up so many miles of roads and trails, and let's you get stuck in far away places...

I always freak out when I don't see safety glasses, hearing protection, and respiratiors. This is how I think after years of working in heavy industry and attending hours and hours of mandatory safety training. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The 95+ with the Z71 package will have the factory skid plates, but if he gets too hardcore, I wouldn't count on them. They're aluminum, and my front plate is already beat up without any real offroading - also wouldn't clear that winch as is. The rear kind of already has a skid plate - it's the receiver hitch; I drag pretty bad going through some ditches, and I have about the same hitch and same clearance on my 95. And yes, that locker just replaces the spiders. Some people call them a pocket locker, though this one looks better constructed than a lot of them. If you are careful, your sideload shouldn't be affected (Not a mechanic, this is just my understanding of how those 14-bolt diffs are constructed.)

I think the Radiator Fan on the snowcat is going to draw way to many amps unnecessarily the way your controlling it. You should put a thermoswitch in the radiator circuit to have it come on only when required.

I’m really enjoying seeing Matt build a larger network of support/resources. That old Chevy is going to be a very capable tool when all the upgrades are completed. Having the right tool/equipment for the job is always beneficial. Once Rudy gets his axel upgrades completed and the larger tires installed, he will be able to provide a such larger support role. Once Rudy changes out the stock engine and upgrades the transmission, another fully capable recovery vehicle will be born. Really interesting and fun to watch the channel expand and build a larger network to help others in need.

I was late to the Suburban party, but after researching the long history of military use and its still being used by military, special forces and secret service. I knew I had to have one. The best purchase I ever made and the best part is they are inexpensive now. Can't go wrong with any model, I opted for the GMT800 Z71 4x4 for my rig. Only paid $2,300 for it too and trust it to drive it anywhere.
