Wish I wasn’t old, my memory has faded a little. That’s a Holmes, 480 Hydraulic, or a 600 Hydraulic, I think. Body and twin winch built in Newbern, TN, or built in Ooltewah, TN. I left Dover Corporation in 1978, Dover owned the Ernest-Holmes name until mid 80’s. After Dover sold to Challenger, manufacturing was moved to Ooltewah. Miller Industries in Ooltewah probably still has parts available.

The cab and front of the yellow tow just may work for Matt's heavy wrecker idea 💡
@tyendor19522 жыл бұрын
That was my thought also.
@1oldskoolluvr2 жыл бұрын
Nah, won't work with how Matt has described his vision. I mean, yeah, it could work, but the hood on that C70 would need to be extended to probably double it's current length. With Matt's wrecker being so tall, and the cab being set back as far as it looks like it will, it also needs a butterfly style hood design for easier access.

Thank you for sharing another great video that reminded me of the time my 68 VW Baja Bug died along the road. That towing job reminded me of a trip a buddy of mine and I did back in the early 80's. He had a Mercury Comet sitting in Bountiful Utah at his mother's place. We towed it with a chain behind a hopped up 56 Chevy stepside pickup to Sheridan Montana. The Comet had no engine, but still overwhelmed the brakes going down Malad Hill. He did not see me waving to go faster, until I pulled along side. LOL We had a wheel bearing go out near Blackfoot Idaho, and a guy let us use one of his bays to work on it. We could not get the race off, so I smoothed it out with emery cloth, and finished our trip. That sanding job must have worked, as it held as long as he still had it.

An easy way of towing something that has no brakes is to run the towing chain through a piece of pipe (2 inch, so most hooks will pass through) that is at least 3/4 the length of the chain. The pipe will prevent the towed vehicle from hitting the vehicle that is towing. The chain will take up most of the force, you will feel a jerk but not a neck snapping force.
@donm.10682 жыл бұрын
THIS IS A GOOD IDEA!! It makes perfect sense.

A steel pipe with a chain bent in half and run down until a loop pops out, then you put the loop over a ball hitch and choke up the pipe. Then wrap the chain around the torsion bar/solid bumper. It will keep them farther away, and more directly connected. I call it a “drag link”.

Harold, after Dover sold to Challenger, and manufacturing was moved to Ooltewah, TN, did they change the model names? I thought it was a 480 Hydraulic, I worked for Dover, manufacturing in Newbern, TN, and don’t recall a Trooper or a Cadet.
@haroldphipps34572 жыл бұрын
@Lane Douglas the 1200 was the very first small hydraulic twin line, and I THINK it was still Earnest Holmes. Shortly after Holmes sold to Dover. IF I am remembering correctly. Was also the first small wrecker you could get with a wheel lift. From the factory. Was a pretty awesome time! Wreckers converting to hydraulics. Wheel lift improvements. Heavy Duty under reaches were pretty new. Lots of improvements in rollbacks. Then the innovator that put a wheel lift on a rollback. That was when we found out the 1 ton wasn't fit for that service anymore. Tow shows were huge!
@haroldphipps34572 жыл бұрын
@Lane Douglas I was a touch off on the names, the 1200 was the Commander. The 1100 was the Trooper. Was Jerry Holmes at Challenger or Century? He got upset at Dover because they were dragging their feet on hydraulics, and whatever company he went to, brought out the first hydraulic, and then everyone was trying to catch up.
