I'm so tired of the "diversity" and "representation" rhetoric from the woke Booktube mob, reducing many of the greats to merely being old (or dead) "white men." I appreciate your passion for literature and the long craft of writing, Ian. Keep up the Great Work 🔥
@FrancisGo.8 ай бұрын
Agreed. We wouldn't throw out great works of science or math just because white men are 'overrepresented' in those fields. We'd at least have the decency to pretend they stole all their ideas. So it's a sign of the contempt people have for literature. They see it as totally subjective. And that is why AI will render them redundant. AI can just pretend to have immutable traits.

There isn't a greater booktuber out there. You're number one, The One, and I took great care in identifying you as such. If I had done a sloppy job and there was Another One, I would have to tear down my whole Ian collage wall, which would probably damage the paint job and i would have to redo the whole wall and start a brand new collage from scratch, not to mention compose a whole new catalog of tributary songs for this hypothetical greater booktuber. No thank you!

Hey, I'm not a writer, but I am interested in innovation. Steve Jobs has talked about technology being the combination of science and the humanities. How do you think David Foster Wallace or Cormac McCarthy would have influenced technology if possible? In the first scenario, do you think DFW would have been against addictive social media? Do you think McCarthy would have been pro-tech in any realm?

Relating to your story about pot smoking in a dorm room I think depending on how liberal your school is it can just as easily be overlooked. The fact you smoke sometimes does not necessarily mean your experience should end because someone disagrees. Have the strength to know the difference. As for other dorm mates complaining use this as an example of conduct. Why does he complain once and say it to just me?

Very motivational speech there. The question of why people should care about literature should probably be answered first. I think the medium by which a good story is told is secondary. But nothing is more personal and more direct and more inclusive (through the process of imaginary co-creation with the author) than a book.

That Ellison story is "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" and is inspired by the murder of Kitty Genovese. Even though the claims of something like 40 spectators was false, it really is incredible how people so easily transfer the responsibility of not only intervening, but even something as basic as phoning the police. Would love some videos on Ellison. At his best he was as good as the best. Luckily, he was never shy about what he thought so there are tons of essays about his life and writing. Even when he's his most rambling old fart self, he's thoughtful.

Didn't DFW stalk, abuse and manipulate women himself? I don't think he's exactly in a position to be telling other people how to live, especially considering how his own life ended.
@ohBwGuy8 ай бұрын
Its never a matter of being in a position to tell others. The question is are you in a position to listen?
@JoeKing698 ай бұрын
@@ohBwGuy I'm all for listening to people who follow their own advice and practice what they preach. That is my answer to your question.
@R.L.Kramer8 ай бұрын
So are you saying we shouldn’t take advice from anyone who has ended their own life?
@JoeKing698 ай бұрын
@@R.L.Kramer the thing is that giving advice is quite possibly the easiest thing you can do. It requires little effort, makes you feel good and others think you're smart. But living by those principles is another thing entirely, and is often the only thing that matters. DFW was a great writer but he is the last person I'd look to for advice on relationships and healthy living. Even his great speech "this is water" was essentially just an eloquent meditation on the importance of mindfulness and empathy. We all know we should be present and empathize with others, the hard part is actually doing it and he clearly did not embody those ideals. At some point words reach a point of seriously diminishing returns. They are but a tool that we've mistaken for the purpose they are meant to serve. So possessed with words we've become that we've mistaken writing for actually doing. And just to reiterate I was totally spot on about the whole mask thing.

I don't know, man. Even Chris Fox, author of 'Write to Market,' admits he wants to create something of lasting value. But he had to build an audience first by way of 'marketing sorcery'. Though he now regrets that to some extent. So I think I'm going to write for the Kindle again. I tried a few short stories back in 2014, but who buys individual short stories? 😂 I'm going to also run multiple AI KZbin channels that adapt my stories into cheap animation while I'm working on my own bespoke animation engine based on my user generated training data. 😅🎉❤ (Sorry for my bad grammar)

We may well be past the peak of humanity's literary epoch. Just like we left our oratory culture behind. Perhaps like Hunter Thompson describing where one could almost see that high water mark of his generation. A high that will only be experienced through retrospect. The progeny may not even recognize the thoughts of the predecessor. Type O Negative's, Everything Dies begins to play.

Some good points, but I think you tread a fine line when you say one shouldn't worry about this or that in terms of political correctness, just write. Then moments later you say one has to write conscious and lift people up. I think an artist/writer should do their work in the way that they feel is right. In most cases works that can be observed to be consciously trying to lift people up come across as pretentious. Does Cormac McCarthy always lift people up? Does David Lynch? It is not really a good description of what they do. A good artist/author will have a certain authenticity and a reflection of truth. The truth is that this world is not always uplifting.

I could not care less what your views on the mask policies were, but when you patronize your local business you are on private property, and you will abide by that businesses respective rules, otherwise they have every right to issue a trespass. Shopping at stores is a privilege, not a right. I'm pretty sure it's not a big deal to wear a mask for the 20 minutes you're in a store, regardless of your personal opinions on the matter. Not doing so doesn't make you some kind of cool iconoclast, it just makes you look silly and in need of attention.
