There's a scientific reason behind your "second stomach."
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
How is it that, after stuffing ourselves full at dinner, we somehow find room to eat again once dessert comes around? Turns out, the thing that makes us do this has a name: It's called "sensory-specific satiety," and it's actually supposed to keep us healthy.

Seriously! That's very much how I feel most of the time at work, where I'm often forced to prepare and bring everything I'll eat for 8 to 12 hours. I would have called it savory and sugar though. The most interesting thing about this scientifically to me is that most vegetables don't really seem to fall much into either category. Fruit is sweet. Meat is savory. What is steamed broccoli?

@@Sumanitu I'm very generic with my salt and sugar definitions as far as our 2 stomachs are concerned. I would consider vegetables in the salt category because I will often eat them in the same mouthful with the rest of my food (let alone eating them on the same plate). I didn't use the word savory because I'm unfamiliar with what savory is as although I know of the word, I don't know what savory is supposed to taste like. Fruits are for the sugar stomach yes. but they don't satisfy my sugar stomach no matter how much fruit I eat. Regular desert is the way to go to fill that bad boy up

In Spanish we have a word for not wanting any more sweets. "Empalagado." Like if I have some dessert that's extremely sugary or I have 6 donuts in one day, I wont want to even LOOK at anything sweet for the rest of the day because I'm "empalagado." So some cultures do have words for the opposite too.

I bet they've done that study too. My own personal anecdote is that I often find myself switching from salty to sweet to salty to sweet foods, so (in the video's verson of the experiment) I think if you offered mac and cheese after they've eaten the ice cream, they'd be able to eat more than one ounce of it.

Thanks for the video! It’s really interesting! And it interlaced with my previous knowledge - i heard about diets there you eat same thing for long time, like, one week you eat only apples (but unlimited amount), other week you eat only salad and so on. It probably partially relied on described effect. Also now i know how to eat more!

3:51 So, what we can learn and apply from this is, if something is not healthy put it in plate all by itself (so you eat less); and if something is very healthy, like fruits and vegetables, put it in your plate in variety (to encourage you to eat more).

i find this very helpful in monitoring why my appetite is so bad. i have adhd, and so when i eat i get full so quickly, most likely because my mind is running a mile a minute and i become distracted/lose interest quickly in whatever it is im eating. so varying my food and snacking throughout the day would prob be better
