Now I know im likely not going to encounter a demon or some other "bad" spirit, I'm not scared of my house settling in the middle of the night, or of something falling or moving because it was accidentally precariously placed by me or someone in my house. In my opinion to call oneself a "debunker" can be a loaded term and has the implications that Simply Strange is erroneously alluding to, "skeptic" is given the same treatment, when what they really mean is "Cynic." Debunking and skepticism are crucial in investigating fields like the paranormal, cryptozoology, alternative medicine and even the misinformation we see on social media. Toss a coin to your debunker and keep up the good work Beardo!

I think the bad impression comes from the way a lot of debunkers indulge in KZbin drama and arguments (even if what they're saying is right). But you're absolutely spot on that the point of debunking isn't to be horrible. Every investigator should be actively working to debunk too. And I like what Watcher were saying last year about having a kind of peer review, quality control system. We might get better answers that way! Thanks for the video Beardo, this is a really important insight.

Very good video, Beardo :) These are things that need to be clarified time and time again, unfortunately. I recommend the film "The Awakening" for a good time. Unfortunately some people are grief stricken and find solace in these fake channels and shame on the creators for taking advantage. When I made a comment and then tried to correct a punctuation error my edit ran into error problems and now isn't showing, so I shall try again: I don't remember anything about his mother being swindled, but I could be forgetting it. What I *_do_* remember is that, after his mother died, a medium claimed during a séance to have contacted her, and the "spirit" "spoke" through her. Her "spirit" spoke English and called him "Harry". Houdini's mother did not speak English, and never called him "Harry". "Harry Houdini" is his *_stage_* name. His real name is Erik, and that's what his mother called him. So Houdini knew the medium was fake. This angered him and started his debunking career. < *_Aaaargh!_* I made a new punctuation error >

The people supporting those fake channels are mostly kids with no understanding between fake and real. They become die hard fans and would lay their lives down to protect their fakers. Its always the debunkers who have to fight the hard fights to give those with brains the reality of fake channels and let them not only see the problems but also educate them on it. Thank you beardo for helping us understand. I myself am not an investigator but the help you have brought threw this channel means alot.
@ElaineBakerCreepyCaboodle15 күн бұрын
Something as simple as feeling a cold blast and then finding an open window is debunking. It's about finding a reason for something, not just calling out something as fake, it's a range of things. Any true group or individual investigator that is honestly interested in the subject knows this. I doubt that people, like Ben, have a serious interest in the paranormal etc., or they wouldn't be treating the subject or debunkers with such contempt.
@sionandjess9 күн бұрын
Debunking is close analysis/research and presentation of the facts. You can debunk a theory when studying history ( for example as I studied it for my degree) where you research a subject, analyse the evidence and present the facts proving the initial theory doesn’t take into account all the facts or evidence. Same in science. People need to research the topic of debunking before trying to debunk a debunker!!
@DetherealDaydream14 күн бұрын
I've had unexplained experiences happen to me a lot, including a recurring dream I still cannot explain no matter how much research I do. So I believe there is something even if it's not ghosts specifically. I don't particularly have many special skills I can bring to this field other than common sense (which feels increasingly rare). But I do have the heart. My family was ripped apart when I was small due to fake mediums. My nan passed away when I was young and my grandad threw so much money at mediums trying to find her. I remember him telling me to never trust a medium because they're all liars. Then he married a nasty woman who wanted his money and I lost him too. I have no idea if he's still alive or not. Sometimes fake mediums can bring comfort to the grieving but sometimes they make everything worse and they destroy lives and families... And they don't care as long as they get paid. And that I have a big issue with, and if I can be a part of a growing sea of voices pointing this out, then I want to be a part of that

My original appeal to the Ghost Hunters show was something (I think) Jason Hawes said on an episode. Paraphrasing from memory, it was that investigators HAVE to approach everything with a skeptic's eye. This echoes what I've read of how Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle approached it. You must rule out every normal explanation of an occurrence before you can consider it para-normal. If you go in praising everything as a sign of ghosts, you will never have true evidence, only an ego trip.

There’s a huge part of us that wants it to be true, we wouldn’t be drawn to it if we didn’t. But we live in a time where media literacy is so low, and people take everything at face value; which makes us vulnerable to bad faith actors who do just want to make money from gullible people. I think we need the balance to remind ourselves to reserve judgement and really not trust anything we ourselves don’t experience.

debunking is a consequence of when someone start to question what they see, a genuine doubt about something that doesn't adds up... if something looks too good to be true, chances are... it's not true. People need to understand that the "evil" people are the ones who make the claims in order to take advantage of people's gullability for their personal gain. I do agree, as a skeptic I'd love to be proven wrong with some genuine evidence, I'd love to have my mouth shut once and for all... all that matter to me is the truth. Nothing more. You mentioned Uri Gheller, Polidoro recalls in his book "Geniale" about the mean comment that this conartist made on FB when Randi died...
