This is pretty bad -iirc Dunbar didn't publish his idea in a peer reviewed journal and let consensus build against or for, he just wrote a book (a way to circumvent direct, initial criticism from experts, and make money). There seems to be many peer reviewed papers criticizing his idea and refuting his evidence.
@anselmoffrisia29303 жыл бұрын
Is that what Darwin did? Actually lots of the old timey science guys wrote a book and weren't published in a reputable science periodical. In FACT rumor has it that Newton's "Optics" was leaked on Facebook since he was fighting the Man, I bet.
@LENZ53693 жыл бұрын
@@anselmoffrisia2930 You do know Dunbar is alive, right? He has been writing books for a few decades now. And FYI: "old timey science guys" mostly wrote books because the modern peer review system of 'research paper' submissions were not really a thing, you would put out your work in books and lectures -and then relevant journals would publish book reviews and expert opinions/critiques of your work.
@anselmoffrisia29303 жыл бұрын

Another place Dunbar's number tends to come up is when you are trying to remember characters in books. These tend to take up slots. If I am reading a bunch of books I can really only get to know a small number of characters before others fade into memory. If I try to read too many serialized stories at the same time, I actually would have to go back and reacquaint myself with the story. I'd expect avid readers who have "friends" in books to have fewer friends out in the actual world.
