Yeah, I looked into using an at home tanning bed to get a tan in the winter, because I figured it was the same type of UV as from the sun....it's not. To me it's not worth the risk.

@@mattm7798 It does have a lot of the same UV as the sun, which is the problem. Skin tans to protect itself from damaging UV rays, so it has to be exposed to damaging UV rays to tan, whether they come from a cancer box or that giant fusion ball in space.

@@evilsharkey8954 Well, I think the thing is the UV rays from the box penetrate deeper than the sun. Both can give you a sun burn just the sun has a natural range of UV while the box doesn't.

I feel like it's worth pointing out that even though this can't happen to an individual organism after development, if it happens to a sex cell, the next generation can have a significant and potentially beneficial mutation. And over thousands of generations and millions of years, that's just evolution...

The odds of beneficial mutation are beyond exponentially smaller than a harmful or neutral mutation. Even if it were to, let's say, give you four arms, the number of mutations that would be required for those arms to be anything more than vestigial dangly bits are beyond astronomical. As for these mutations resulting in evolution over time, that would also require that the mutation be significantly beneficial and result in the carrier's bloodline producing enough offspring (that randomly select for the correct genes to also exhibit the mutation in a beneficial manner) to somehow outcompete the rest of the human population sufficient to either replace them or genetically differentiate themselves enough to no longer be able to breed with other humans. This is all, of course, a non zero possibility, but in the same probability range as phasing through solid matter or having all of the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere simultaneously combust into a global ball of flame (I might even say that the global ball of fire is more likely). The mostly likely outcome is either a negative or neutral mutation that results in no offspring, or an incredibly unlikely beneficial mutation that is ultimately still bred out of the gene pool in successive generations due to the number of mutations that would have to be passed on in order for the mutation to be viable. The most likely mutations that could succeed are simple ones, like a minor change to eye or hair color, or minor changes to cellular level processes that give your offspring insignificantly better healing or immune systems. You probably wouldn't even notice such mutations until numerous generations later, when the effects have potentially mutated enough to be noticeable, and even then we're only talking about the difference of something like having slightly different shade of blue eyes eventually "evolving" into people with purple eyes.

I suffered bad anemia in my 20's, and on one visit to the doctor, I told him I had been regularly ingesting pitchblende, since the ionising radiation would help with the iron. I thought I'd get an eye roll, and maybe a chuckle, if I was lucky. He immediately started lecturing me on how dangerous that could be. When I told him it had been a (poor) attempt at a joke, he told me that he regularly has patients self medicate with strange, and sometimes dangerous compounds.

The outright impossibility of radiation-induced random mutations giving people genuine superpowers is probably why some of the characters that got their superpowers in this way were retconned so that they already had a fictional gene that always reacts the same way if it's hit by nuclear radiation, and the outcome is the person gaining superpowers. Example: The Marvel Universe's Gamma Mutates (most famously the Hulk), who now possess the "gamma gene" which is normally inert but can be activated by being hit with gamma rays.

I've been trying all possible recipes from fictional stories like comics, movies and books to gain superpowers, by now I've died a total of 83 times, around 28 from cancer, 26 from instant desintegration, 19 from severe brain damage, 10 from chemical poisoning and other 10 from just regular poisoning. I've gotten no superpowers aside from the immortality I was already born with, but no matter how *PAINFUL* it is, I will keep trying. Edit: Also, I once heard someone tell me that radiation was a quick and painless death, let me tell you, that's a lie!!! It's agonizingly painful from the moment of exposure to the moment of death, unless that radiation is strong enough to kill you virtually instantaneously in a way that before your neurons can fire pain signals to your brain you are already obliterated, that's going to hurt, a lot.

I'll always remember that bit in Family Guy where Adam West (RIP) decides he wants super powers, so he rolls around in a bunch of radioactive waste. Then it cuts to him at the doctor later being diagnosed with lymphoma lol. And now, I'll always think of Adam West when I think of radioactive super powers. Even though Batman was the only super hero with no real powers other than the power of wealth and embezzling money from Wayne Enterprises to fund his weird bat fetish. But I'm sure his investors don't mind.

I think it's worth noting that radiation is seems to act like a trigger, Interacting with inactive DNA in modified humans while we were hunter-gathers by ether Kree experiments or Celestials trying to create Antibodies for developing Celestials. This can be applied to everybody in Marvel, From Hulk to Mutants even Cap. The one similarity they seem to share is external factors cause the switch to flip on

Sometimes people actually do use radiation to trigger superpowers but not the way you think. Plant breeders sometimes irradiate plants when they’re setting seed to trigger mutations. With enough seeds, they’re likely to get a good mutation, eventually, which they can then multiply, sell, and hybridize with. It’s quicker than waiting for natural mutations and doesn’t come with the stigma of genetic modification.

702.140a Mutate appears on some creature cards. It represents a static ability that functions while the spell with mutate is on the stack. “Mutate [cost]” means “You may pay [cost] rather than pay this spell’s mana cost. If you do, it becomes a mutating creature spell and targets a non-Human creature with the same owner as this spell.” Casting a spell using its mutate ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs (see 601.2b and 601.2f-h).

May I suggest, on the subject of radiation and "superpowers" looking into atomic gardening? Exposing crops to gamma emitters (usually a cobalt isotope) to see what changes that causes. Near the source, most stuff just dies, and far away, things are usually unaffected, but there's a sweet spot where we can get some interesting changes. Some cultivars of grapefruit and peppermint are products of that process.

Regarding the leaner meat with the mentioned muscle mutation: it was possible to breed cows with exactly this mutation. But the cows, with so much muscle mass, are not able anymore to give birth, so a c section is requiered. So overall a pretty silly idea if you ask me. Furthermore they made tests with mice and the mutation. A regular fit mouse was eg able to hold longer on a stick than the beefed up mouse. I guess pretty much like with us: tremendous amounts of muscle wont help you in every situation ^^.
