In this deep dive, I'm exploring the mixed reactions to Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon. From stunning visuals and action-packed scenes to the lack of character development and a thin plot, we'll look at why this movie might not resonate with everyone. Is Rebel Moon all style and no substance? Let's see if this cinematic spectacle is worth your time or just another missed opportunity.
Let me know your thoughts below, and crucially, whether you think I should watch Part II 🙂
- Why you might love it: High production value, epic action scenes, and stunning visuals.
- Why you might not: Weak character development, predictable plot, and missed potential.

I don't see why I should love action movies more or less than very deep characters/pitch movies... I simply love both. What is standing out for me, as a huge Rebel Moon fan-, is the lore. Of course I enjoyed having a Star Wars like movie for adults full of blood, gore and action and a simplist story for kids (sorry Star wars fans, I don't like that franchise at all). But the lore really got me. From the costumes to the Kalies (you know the slave ladies who operate as ship motors) there is just SO MUCH interesting stuff. Stuff we'll probably learn more along the way. And the more I watch Rebel Moon (yes severall times already), the more I think this lore deeply compelling. So yes the scenarion is thin. But that never stopped people to ruch to see Star Wars or -worse- any movies by Roland Emmerich that are just ridiculous. The character development? I didn't feel like something was missing; even knowing little we know enough to get empathy. And please don't forget the nice steampunk vibe, the great costumes or the amazing music composed by Tom Holkenborg. So, in my opinion of course, because we all have our own tastes, it's more than enjoyable. It's freaking good. Can I have a video called "Why you really like... Rebel Moon" now please? 😉

Oh man, I really like the time and thought you put into this reply. Quick Q: do you think Part 2 could be the key to unlocking my inner Rebel Moon fan? Honestly I'm still hunting for someone who's seen it, so I'm turning to the expert here - what's the verdict?

@@parrydigm You know, it's almays the haters we hear the most. now, it seems the lovers are starting to speak for themselves too. Times they are changing 😄So it seems interesting to give my personal take on this. I can't tell, as it all depends on YOUR own tastes in the end. Does it become completely different? No. But you have the back stories of the other heroes (Titus, Milius, Nemesis and Tarak), you have finally more than a glimpse of the kalies/ship motors (and man, I want to see their rebellion so bad LOL), you'll know why it was so easy for Tarak to tame the griffin, more lore overall, Balisarius and Noble are getting even worse (Palpatine is like Jar-Jar Binks compared to them), you have more than hour of total freaking epic battle (and yes Jimmy the robot will be more useful in the second part though I loved his very poetic introspection moments in first movie)... So now you have to watch it, just to get the full experience especially as part one and two are not really separate movies but one movie I think. And a rebellion will rise :D I hope that will be the key to opening your inner Rebel Moon fan, but even if it is not, at least you'll have more scope to decide what you like and what you don't. ☺Director's cut versions of course (no need to even watch the shorter versions). I always watched the 2 long versions in a row and for me it was the key. And now I'm even kind of obsessed with this :P

I love Rebel Moon Directors Cuts. Amazing. 9/10. My issues are only with a few pacing and logical issues i guess you’d say? I don’t think an example of pacing is needed for you to understand my slight disappointment. I loved the pacing for the most part but sometimes(the fields for example) I think Zach could have trimmed it down just a tad. 1 example of the minor logical issues is the asian lady vs the spider woman. The logical issue is why the rest didn’t help when a child was at risk. Even though that bothered me a bit, i still understood what Zach was going for and I liked it overall despite my minor annoyance. And what Zach was going for is, this is this characters chance to prove to the team why shes useful. Knowing she was a great warrior by reputation alone, the team decided to watch instead of intervene believing shed succeed because they wanted to see her skills first hand. Thats why I like that scene overall even though I had a slight issue with them not helping, I understand in a relative and narrative sense why its necessary even though its not logical. Remember, movies are escapism. They often take liberties against was is known and believed to tell its narrative. I like how Snyder always challenges the norm. Thats why I’m a fan. Its understandable for viewers who only look at things logically to not like Snyders style. After all most people think relativity is real, fixed and logical. But it’s not. This is one example of course. Theres a few others im sure you guys know that I wont get into in this short review. To close this review, Rebel Moon is a daring two part film that challenges the norm and allows Snyder to go wild. I love this movie.

It's a totally fair perspective, there are a few movies where the director is trying something new or daring to explore a new beach head. I guess my vibe here is that there are better ways - for example, in the sword/monster scene, the rest of the team could have been trapped, or some rule of law meant it was single combat, or... something. It's just weird to see them all hanging out at the back 🤣 A thing I picked up from your review here is that the Director's Cut might be the go-to. Would you say that's a better take on the movie than the OG release? A really good example of DCs being better is the Total Recall movie (2012 edition). It was incomprehensible as a theatrical release but the DC absolutely redeemed it because it had more time to spend on important moving parts.

I'm with you on the amazing and challenging part. I also think that Nemesis going alone after Harmada already helps to strongly charaterize her as a mother who lost her child. And her killing Harmada is very sad actually. I love the harvest scene in part 2 because it's the moment where the wary villagers learn to trust the heroes. Plus this scene is all about life and highly needed before such a long final and bloody fight. ;)

Great overview and I honestly think you're almost too generous lol. I love big action set pieces and even I cringed at the awful character development and story twlling. The problem is there's an entire franchise of movies with over-the-top action and memorable (if trite) characters in The Fast and Furious movies. Rebel Moon aint no Fast and Furious lol.

Oh man you just gave me an idea to do a why-you-like on Hobbs and Shaw (arguably the best F&F movie, even if it doesn't carry the title). You're exactly right, there are some absolutely superb action movies with memorable characters ... and Rebel Moon doesn't stick the landing on that. I do think I should watch part 2, but ... neither the body or spirit is willing and I think to do it justice I should be in the right headspace to give it a fair shake.
