Marcus, in the first Misty isle segment..the before reflector/after reflector shot at 6:13 looks to be taken with a different aperture, did you change it because you used a reflector? I’m just confused about using a reflector to add light then changing to a smaller aperture (I’m guessing as the background is less blurred)
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Well spotted David! The shot shown without reflector was taken at F/2.8 whereas the shot taken with the reflector was f/5.6. There was a reason for the change but this was edited out as it was a bit long and drawn out. The change had nothing to do with the use of the reflector though. Good observation!

Great video, as always thanks! I did smile through the f22 diffraction section, because: I used to be a fan of Paul Gallagher, who produces very lovely images. On a workshop, he mentioned that f22 was absolute fine with full frame cameras. He spotted my look of disbelief and barely talked to me for the rest of the workshop. We live and learn...
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Lots of photographers give conflicting advice, but we like to back up our advice with hard evidence. F/22 won’t be too bad on a f/45 lens but our advice would be to avoid it if it’s your smallest aperture.
@andybarnard45753 жыл бұрын
Using the water analogy, f22 on an 800mm lens will be a bigger hole than f22 on an 18mm lens. So context of advice is important? Also, for a given size of print each 5ish micron pixel on a full frame camera is blown up much less than, say, from an image on a smartphone where the sub-micron pixels are nearly always smaller than the wavelength of light.
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy. The water was simply to allow viewers to picture what diffraction is. It serves no other purpose, as light acts differently to water. An 800mm lens is likely to go down to f/64, so your point is not valid. We specifically said that it only applies if your lens goes down to f/22. Hope that helps.
@andybarnard45753 жыл бұрын

Greetings from southern Indiana, USA! In the gin & vodka shots he says that he will shoot one at f/5.6 & the rest at f/2.8 and Photoshop them in if they want it with the f/5.6 instead. Isn't this digital? I would have thought that it would be easier to shoot the subject twice at both 5.6 & 2.8. There isn't the film cost, after all! This may take a little more time, but save the possible hassle later. As usual, I do enjoy the different sections you have in this 27 minutes. Very good!
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Hi Louis. You make a fair point but all commercial photos tend to have to be finely edited, which includes the background. Therefore, but taking one shot at f/5.6 and placing the product from other shots into this, then saves having to edit several backgrounds. It’s really 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. However, at least doing it this way, the client gets consistent backgrounds rather than some which are slightly better than others. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching. Great to hear you enjoy the show.
@babajaiy8246 Жыл бұрын
For the bottle shots you mention that one of the reasons for choosing a 50mm lens is because of the falls lying within infinity focus range - yet chose a low f-stop for depth of field control - making the falls out of focus. I'm guessing you just wanted to keep the option of a shot that would allow both bottle and falls to be in focus?
@PhotographyOnline Жыл бұрын
You misunderstood, Marcus said that the 50mm focal length gave him the desired magnification of the waterfall. It has nothing to do with distance or infinity. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching.
@babajaiy8246 Жыл бұрын
@@PhotographyOnline Yeah, he didn't say anything about infinity focus. I misunderstood not per se, but because I was still thinking about what he was saying and doing in a video I had just watched in which he was talking about infinity focus and choosing lens focal length used which then decides the distance infinity focus begins; i.e. what you want to be in focus for sure.

strange, no mention of focus stacking (in or out of camera). Do you not use it to increase your DOF?
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. I can only speak for myself but I’ve never focused stacked and I never will. Firstly, there is no need if you know how to control depth in the traditional ways. Secondly you need to ask yourself why you would want a focus stacked image, as this is not how we see the world? Focus stacking is just the trend for the 2020s, just like HDR was the trend for the 2010s. It will be dated in a few years and seem as naff. I’ve never seen a single focus stacked image which I think looks good, but this is only my opinion and I know many will have an alternative opinion. Ultimately it is down to the individual but we only feature techniques which we use ourselves and can speak about with authority. As none of us here at Photography Online focus stack (because we see no need to), then we wouldn’t want to pretend to be experts on the topic. Hope that helps to answer your question. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We appreciate it. All the best. Marcus

I really like the explanation of diffraction. However, the rule of thumb is based on the widest aperture, not on the smallest. With a F1.4 - F22 lens, why not shoot at F1.4 for maximum sharpness of the subject? There seems to be another optical phenomen at work preventing this. Or is it also called diffraction? As far as I understand the video, the rule of thumb maximizes the sharpness of the subject, not depth of field. What would be a rule of thumb for the best compromise of depth of field and sharpness of the subject? For example, shooting at 0.5 x F22 = F11? Or using just the next available F stop wider than F22? Staying at F22? Using another camera with a smaller sensor? Using a wider lens and approaching the subject more?
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Diffraction is virtually non existent at wider apertures and usually starts to kick in around 2 stops wider than the minimum aperture. This is where you would ideally maximise both depth of field and sharpness. There are other downsides of using the widest aperture (vignetting and soft edges) so the best area is between 2 stops from either end. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question

@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pedrosa. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. The reflectors used are made by Lastolite. They come in many sizes, so get whichever one best suits your needs. You can get a few different surfaces (white, gold, silver, etc) but the one you want is called Sunfire, which is halfway between gold and silver. Each reflector has two sides so it’s probably best to get white on the other side. Hope this helps.

Hi Seppo. Thanks for your message. The clip in filters we were using are for all Canon cameras, so they also fit the R6. Let us know if you still need help. Many thanks

@@PhotographyOnline Thank you for the reply. I mean your web store and the Kase store both only have Nikon and Sony versions (Kase store has Fujifilm too), there are no Canon versions available anywhere. Where could I buy Canon versions?

Hi Seppo. We’ve now added them to our shop so hopefully you will see them there. Just to give you a warning, there’s a 2 week order time, but if you order today then this may be reduced as it can be added to a scheduled shipment leaving tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Greetings from New England ! Love the show, and always look forward to them! I am a professional photographer and have been for 30+ years, but I still find I learn something new from every show. So this may seem like a random question -- How did you all meet, and start the show? I think that might make an interesting segment, you all seem like close friends and colleagues. Thanks again for the shows! Keep up the great work.

Hi Joseph. Thanks for watching. We actually covered the story behind how we met in our live Q&A video a couple of months ago but this is only available to our supporters. We may try to repeat it elsewhere sometime. We appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. All the best.

Morning Marcus from Australia, looking at your King Joy tripod, can you advise what models it is and why you have it.
@PhotographyOnline3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary. You’ve preempted our next show where we have a feature about tripods. I use the one I do (Kingjoy A86) because after using many other tripods which all broke after a couple of years, I was fed up with spending £700 each time. I met someone with a Kingjoy tripod and liked the look of it. Have been using mine for 4 years now and it’s by far the best I’ve ever used. They are not easy to get hold of, so I stock a small amount to make them accessible to others. I have a brand new one already in Oz if you are interested. If so, email me at marcus@skyephotoacademy.com as I may not see your reply here.

Wondering why not shoot the product at different apertures, and thereby avoid photoshop editing afterwards. Changing the aperture and shooting two or three more shots will only take another minute or two.

They all need Photoshopping anyway so it’s really no difference, but you make a fair point.
