Id add lowering your lights. Idk if turning off all lights for 3 days (blackout but without covering it up with cardboard) will kill sps but softies and lps can handle it no prob. Plus if you have dino its most likely a new tank where you dont have sps yet. I struggled with dinos for a few months, the best thing i did was getting pissed off and dumping half the pack of pellets at once. Lights off really has a HUGE visible impact. Mix it with a UV if you can afford it and its a breeze, dont even need to test for nutrients daily, you see them fading away daily until theres no more. Most importantly, what every guide omits to mention is STOP SKIMMING!!! Either turn it off or take off the collection cup if you want to use it as an oxygen source (you dont want to filter out nutrients here). Run carbon since the most common strain is toxic. Its pretty hard to get good advice on dinos from pros because most of them havent truly struggled with it. They werent as common 5 years ago as they are now. Literally every new tank has a dino outbreak if the reefer is impatient and want corals asap. Then you got places like the 5min guide from BRSTV on dinos tryna sell you products that wont even work. They should really delete that useless bs video.

Damnit. U just described me. I’m a new reefer and probably over skimmed. My phosphates and nitrates are near zero. Damnit. Dino everywhere. Just bought a UB sterilizer tho. Will be here in a few days.

I got dinos (ostreopsis) with high nO3 and po4. Just beat it in my 80g With lowering light intensity to 20% with ramping up for 30 days. Dosed heavy bacteria (micro 7 and micro clean) hooked up a 40w uv, got my phosphate to 0.07 and basted the sand at night and its 99% gone. Just thought I'd share what worked for me in a high nutrient Dino bloom. Nitrate is 20ppm and everything is fine. The micro clean really cleared up all the sludge in between the live rock as well. It was really bad for 3 weeks and killed about 5 sps. Everything is coming back now and it took about 3 weeks with constant monitoring after work.

Great Video would you do a talk on live phytoplankton eg: how good it is , how much to dose , and when do you start to dose , if you have a new tank with the 1st few corals is this a good way to keep the nutrients level or is there better ways? Thanks
@carminecarlone28692 жыл бұрын
Phyto is the best thing since sliced bread. I firmly believe it helps provide a healthy environment for corals and inverts to grow. I have stopped dosing it just because financially I have other priorities. However when i did dose it, I saw very well thi gs starting to happen that I no longer see. I would do about 5-10 ml a day in a 24 gallon system. I was told this is a lot but that worked for me. You can and probably should decrease that dosage tho😂 just saying what I did. I would also target feed a few corals

Tank established for one year, battled cyano, dino, hair algae. Finally got everything sorted after 10 months. I added aminos for the first time in 6 months for corals, after one week full blown dino out brake worse than ever. NO3 5ppm PO4 0.05. Acropora growing well, LPS good and fish happy. Any idea how to extract aminos from my system and getting back on track? I will need to ID the species of dino but don't have a microscope...will borrow...

what size are dinoflagellates? arent they smaller than any filter sock?

You need to use a 5 micron filter sock. I think most standard filter socks are about 100-200 micron. I ordered a 5 micron sock on Amazon specifically to siphon out Dino from my tank.

The micron size of the filter certainly matters otherwise the dinos go right through it. You need a 5 micron filter sock.

I had no idea you had dino testing! I have been wondering for the last 8 months of this battle why all these icp tests and all didn't offer it! I dont know if I even have them anymore because its so light now and has changed forms. It was snotty on the sand bed at first. It was also covering corals here and there but kept blowing it off. Its never been stringy with bubbles or matted like pics I have seen. What is gong on now is my sand bed is clear I just have like a dustiness on my rocks and the random film with bubbles here and there.. Is it normal to have dusty rocks and wavemakers and the film on glass? Someone told me it was! The film on glass does have bubbles attached here and there. Its not everywhere either but random spots. I have had my pump off for 2 days repairing a leak also since water isnt being filtered maybe has made the dustiness more noticeable and /or more of it since no filtration. Skimmer off and lowered water level but upped the wavemakers for oxygenation. I have no idea what is goin on! I had a lot of corals die and when the skelton shows it gets a film on the skeltons. I did have 0 po4 and thats what started it but its been up a while. No3 are 10 and po4 is 0.17(little high) Fixing to change chemipure elite I put in filter sock for po3 but since I have a small tank I have no room for a refugium or anyway to keep nitrates down. I have been dosing mb7 and vibrant as well (for dino) and keeps nitrates down too. I usualy hit 20 no3 2 weeks after wc. Since Increased dosing to daily it has been staying lower. I also have added 2 low watt uvs to my sump. I have tried chemiclean a while back it did nothing. It was much worse then and on sand bed. Does this sound like dinos or cyano or what? Change in lighting could have killed my corals. I did lower them because like a dummy I bought more corals because at one point I thought it was gone and most died but were also delivered in a bad way and half dead! I think dipping stressed them more! I am not sure what to do. I was going to send in a sample to you but if it comes with a plan and all its probably not cheap and I cant follow some of the plan since its not on sand! I am so perplexed! Sorry this is so long! Would you test id what I have and a plan or just dinos?

Man I’m having such a tough time with my 15g. I had Dino’s that o just got rid off by blacking out my tank. Problem is my nutrients are still bottomed out the Dino is gone but I have HORRIBLE green hair algae that popped up now. So if I raise the nutrients I feel like I’m just going to feed into the algae. Idk what to do this tank is very tricky it’s killing me 😫

Maybe you have high phosphates and relatively low Nitrates? Cyanobacteria can utilize atmospheric Nitrogen, therefore they can outcompete other (beneficial) micro organisms that cannot utilize atmospheric N

Sorry but using UV is only effective against specific types of dinos…. Osteoporosis and coolia as these enter the water column when the lights go out the other types large cell, small cell and prorocentrum go into the rockwork therefore UV is pretty ineffective against them… if battling the first two then a correctly sized Uv ran at the correct flow rate will remove the dinos with 1-2 weeks… other types the best option is to dose silicates along with keeping nutrients elevated
