I'm currently starting to detail cars as a side hustle. It's a great relax after 8 hours on PC in office. Well, it's also stressful, because I want to always do perfect job, give it 110%, surpass the customer's expectations and the greatest reward is how the customers react to the result. That's way more satysfying to me than the financial reward. And maybe a small advice - don't pay for advertisement! Let your work do it for you! Start detailing cars of your family members, friends, neighbors, etc., charge them half the usual rate and tell them to spread the word. And trust me, if you do great job they will happily tell about it to other people. I've already gained customers through this and the number will grow exponentially very fast. Good luck and above all - HAVE FUN detailing:)

You’re so right Dave, I’ve done a few detailed cleans for friends and colleagues and have mostly felt disappointed with their reactions where they didn’t actually look at the extra extra effort like the wheel barrels and arches 😢 I may as well just ‘washed’ the car with a bucket and sponge 🙄

Great video, mate! You touched on an important topic, pricing. One price does not fit all vehicles and starting a detailing business that needs to be clear up-front. Larger vehicles usually carry a heftier price tag due to the amount of work that will need to be done. It's also important to have listed, very dirty vehicles will cost the customer more due to the extra time it will take to clean and more chemicals needed. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

This is a fantastic video and you are telling the truth about the toxic community within the detailing world. Everyone has to start somewhere we all don't have Daddy Warbucks money to buy the top of the line stuff. I tell detailers to start small and as they make money and their business grows then buy more expensive stuff. I tell people to buy in bulk and shop online or look at a pawn shop for equipment. Your experience and knowledge will help others be able to grow their business and to understand the logistics of detailing. Great job Dave and thank you for this great amazing video.

It’s a shame to hear you’re no longer cleaning cars Dave. I’ve got 10 big 4x4 s that are absolutely filthy so was hoping you could do a full detail plus 2 stage machine polishing and ceramic coating for £30 each. I’ll have to take my business somewhere else instead… 🤣 On a serious note, good luck with the new ventures, a job as a Tv presenter surely awaits - you’re a natural. 👍🏾

I kept 3 clients. One of them is twice a week and to be honest I could survive with that one client alone but I had 3 years of practicing and then 16 of actually grafting in the industry and to be honest KZbin is a 10 year plan for me and for once it makes me happy so it's something I want to carry on with. Personally I don't know how long I will keep detailing content up for as my next venture has to be car content. If KZbin is my full time job then I have to get a team of people to join me I think

i think starting out and taking the plunge is very daunting, even if your doing it on the side to begin with, pricing is probably the hardest thing come to grips with, just getting off thr ground myself and pricing was the biggest hurdle, you often find yourself questioning have i charged too much, or am i charging too little etc etc, and when you have these cheap drive through car wash places, its difficult to compete as a standalone valetter/detailer, most people just want a clean car and dont care how you achieve it, love watching your videos, have learnt soo much from your channel especial the business side of things, certainly helped me create a plan and structure for what i eventually would like to achieve, but for now its baby steps and just taking what i can and not biting off more than i can chew, like most things and professions, it all comes with experience, great vid, you should be very proud of what you have accomplished truly amazing

You make some good points there and I listened intently as I am debating whether to start my own business and advertise my services rather than using word of mouth as I am retired and have an income coming in. I have a genuine love of cars and I must be wired differently to you as I prefer doing other peoples cars rather than my own as it gets boring doing mine over and over again. Mind you mine are always spotless so it doesn't stop me as I prefer doing something rather than nothing. I have all the kit so that is not holding me back it's just if it becomes a job will my enjoyment diminish when I have to do it.

Fair play to you Dave for achieving such a lot in such a short space of time and also telling people how it is . I do a few cars now and again more for my mental health and also seeing the finished car looking great when i have completed it but what i have found is more and more people seem to like the £5 car wash with 50 men running around their car all at once and where i live there is bloody loads of them from inside multi storey car parks to standing on pub car parks ! Thankfully i have a full time job as cleaning cars full time here i feel would be difficult .

This was a very interesting video tonight dave, everything you have talked about has had my full attention. I can relate to most things you have mentioned as it was something I did a few years ago! In the end I was turning potential new customers away as I was literally working 7 days a week in my full time job and weekends doing the mobile valeting. Once the word of mouth got round I had to put a complete stop to it as I was burning myself out and also having a huge impact on my family and social life. But I do love cleaning my own and my wife’s car that’s all I do nowadays.

Dave, thank you for being honest and candid about this. I've been a mechanic for nearly a quarter century (about half my life, actually), and many of the points you brought up about the "side hustle" are completely applicable to ANY side hustle. These are many of the reasons why I no longer do mechanical side jobs and haven't for years. In particular, your comments on the satisfaction of cleaning your own vehicle vs. doing one for a customer. I greatly enjoy your videos and the tips you share, although I never see myself jumping on the side hustle bandwagon. Wishing you a great day, Sir! Kindest regards, Shea Laking

I’ve spent the last couple of years researching & finally got the perfect set up for my own pride & joy. Bought old panels to practise on & test products, before going anywhere near it. Wasn’t intending on doing other peoples but it has worked out that way, better than I could have ever planned. Neighbours noticed results, long story short, word of mouth brought them to me & I now have all the customers I want (limited to 3 per weekend so as I have time for other things) all within a 5 mile radius. Fits nicely with my full time job & your video just confirmed a lot, as well as gave me some idea. 🙏🏽

I've thought about going back into it. As a grown man. I would probably stay away from listing machine polishing or paint correction. Engine bays I may offer a top level clean if asked as an extra and add on to the price. I'm a painter and decorator, I did enjoy the regular customer jobs wash and vacs and the occasional mini valets. The random calls for full valets because a child has been sick 😫 or dog hair trashed car they want to sell wasn't so kean

Seriously great advice...been watching you for a number of years now, and learned a lot re the techniques, etc. And I LOVE cars. Mine is an Audi B8 S4...and love driving it and seeing it clean and bright. Also like when you collaborate with other detailers ( the guy who took no prisoners re the AVA pressure washer - thinking of getting one of those as I have a Kärcher and it's showing its age and effectiveness ). Awesome video. Great suggestions. As an aside, would you have other people work for you or is that too much hassle regarding employment law and attitude you might get from lazy gits who turn up late, do a half assed job and still wanna get paid? As a pricing structure, would £50 for small ( say a Polo/ Fiat 500 ), £80 for medium sized car ( say a mondeo - do they still exist ) and £100 for a 4x4 be a good place to start?

So they wouldn't be necessarily be offering big decon cleans if that makes sense? So this way it gives encouragement to the youngsters who recently left school or whatever who just want to practice some basics

Still hooked to your videos as the opening of my mobile valeting business closes in. However, the final bit of kit I'm struggling with is an electrical source. Do you have any recommendations. IE, generator, or battery? If you have a video could you link it as I couldn't find one. Thank you

I relied solely on customers power and didn't use any generators. It was never a problem 👌 thanks for watching 🙂

Thanks for the response. That's understandable. If you do however, ever make a video on generators or battery's. I will be the first ot watch it.

Don't make leaflets it's a waste of time and resources. I would say start off by having a price list on Facebook and target local resident groups

Looking to start a car detailing business. I’m more interested in doing the interior than exterior. Wondering if it possible to go head and just be a business that does interior for while then add the exterior. Any help would be much appreciated thanks!

Can I just start a business cleaning exterior of car only? Like £20 exterior wash? I love cleaning outside but hate inside 😂. Do you think there would be a market for that mate?
@epicautomotivedetailing
@epicautomotivedetailing Жыл бұрын
Yes definitely a market for that. As it's just a part time thing there is no harm but long term it may not do much good if you wanted to go full time. It all comes along with experience

If you do this part-time, do you need to carry water and a generator? Or can you use their outside tap and electricity.
@epicautomotivedetailing
@epicautomotivedetailing 8 ай бұрын
no need to carry power and water unless its one of those locations... sometimes you just got to ask yourself which is easier. getting a tank and power or just saying no to that one customer who has an awkward location

But that brings out the lazy buggers walking past who like what your doing and ask if you could do theirs as well ( not the DO MINE NEXT line either ) . I've found be visible, be polite and friendly when spoken to , and the more your seen the better . I work cleaning customers cars for a Vauxhall chain . I know from that you gotta be ready for the sh*t holes as they all won't be as well cared for as your own car and it is demoralising at times . Just think dirty ba*tards and crack on regardless
