I have been a bicycle rider for 60 years, and you are right, Citizen. It is often much safer if you can keep up with traffic instead of hugging the side while cars try to pass. Some of the cars that pass you that way will then immediately make a right turn directly across your path because they already forgot you were there. There used to be a tool philosopher on TV named Tim Taylor who spread the word about more power being a good thing. He was right.

I absolutely agree 👍 I've been building them for 50 years and still ride a big old fat tire ebike! The law is an ass when it comes to ebikes... they'll let 16 year old kids drive a Ferrari at 200 but an old guy like me has to putter along at 32! Ridiculous!

If you can't handle riding at bike speeds along streets then get a motorcycle. Riding fast in bike lanes isn't safe for bike riders that are slower. If someone makes a right turn in front of you when you are going 40mph on a fast e-bike that'll be worse than if you're going slower on either a bike or a slower e-bike. You're argument is senseless. More power in bike lanes will kill you or some hapless bike rider.

If anyone's thinking of getting this bike* and/or riding in traffic, please PLEASE wear an actual motorcycle helmet when riding. 1) Regular bike helmets are only rated safe up to 14mph. Flying out of your seat at 30-40mph with that little plastic basket means a crushed skull. 2) When riding in traffic, the car that hits you WILL be going faster than 14mph, and will instantly accelerate your body to their speed. Not only do you get the impact of them hitting you, you additionally get the impact of you flying into something else--like the asphalt, a telephone pole, the curb--at whatever speed the car was going. Again, a plastic basket won't save you. *Or any Class 3 or "Unclassified" ebike

actually, so what? Sorry, but even if I was on a regular motorcycle I wouldn't want a helmet. One is not required in all States, for good reason. I can hear what's going on around me better without the helmet, one of many reasons. There are trade-offs to everything. I'm not living my life being boxed in by what others think. And I don't go around telling people to focus on worst case scenarios that are low probability of happening. 😠 YOU can do what you want. However, don't expect others to ignore their own reasons.

I agree the extra speed capability can be a safety feature. The extra power also comes in handy for group rides when someone breaks down. You can get to them quickly, and if you need to tow them back, it's not a struggle. Plus there's the benefits that makes you able to ride with a variety of other bikes. Our city group ride is easy going and you don't even need an e-bike for it, but last week I was carving through the woods at night with Sur Ron's and stunt bikes, and it was easy keeping up with them.

So much better than any 48 volt bike that I feel sorry for those without the power. Crazy good bike for $2,000, people should be happy to wait 8 weeks cause there ain’t anything close at this price. I put on some cheap turn signals which help in traffic and a Suntour seat post. I am thinking of switching to 26x3.5 road tires when I change tires to get more speed, range, and rear linkage travel. Really like the suspension on roads and sidewalks, keeps the bike glued to the road. The post just makes it that more cushy.

I too like that speed but it comes with other things to consider. Drivers aren't use to a bicycle going that fast so you have to be aware and prepared for how they're going to react. You live in boonies with faster roads. Probably boonies close to town. The same argument applies for getting a 28-30mph bike in urban areas with slightly slower fast roads. For urban areas, torque (not that freedom lacks any) is more important. With pedaling you want 0-20 in 6 seconds or so, so that you can fly ahead of traffic either at light change, or for fast long road, or highway ramp clearing, wait for red for traffic behind you. The reason you don't want a 40mph bike is that going that fast will burn through battery fast, in addition to not needing access to roads with that speed. If you want to tour accross all road types, you'd want to save range. 30mph is fast enough to let cars pass you slowly and be more patient as to when to pass.
@jfly2249
@jfly2249 Жыл бұрын
Don’t have to use the speed if you don’t need it. I ride 15-20 mph but can easily burst to 40 if needed. The Wired goes 0-30 in about nine seconds and has more torque than advertised because the 100nm is for a 48v version. 28mph will get you killed on a 30mph road from pissed off drivers whereas at 35mph your in the flow of Traffic. God forbid your on a hill with a 750watt 48v system trying to keep up with traffic. On a Wired, you can fit right in.

Stahp STAHP I already ordered one(blue of course), now ya gotta taunt me while I have to wait for it to arrive!? 🤣 Seriously though, the folks at Wired may owe you a bit of a kickback at this point, I’m sure your reviews and comparisons have helped a lot! And to your point on having that power available, I’ve said the same with my (EV) car. The thing is *so* fast, I can safely enter any stream of traffic without causing anyone to brake or dodge, and if needed, I can overtake/dodge/jump ahead of a vehicle that may be slow, erratic, on fire, whatever, rather than being forced to stay behind. And of course it’s fun! I’m in an area where I’d have to dodge cars, golf carts, many other cyclists, and potentially bears when I hit trails, so I’ll take all the power I can get. “With great power comes great restraint to not go ludicrous speed everywhere.” I think that’s how that saying goes, right?

The area I live in because of the pace, you really need a e-bike that goes at 35mph. They have renewed the road ways, and are finally making some descent bike lanes. We really need to come together on the e-bike situation, because we have younger people doing wheelies on main roads, bunny hopping off of curbs, and riding on sidewalks. None of this is helping our cause. They are already trying to ban e-bikes all over.

Spoke Skins are cool BUT if you put them on you need to remember to take them off now and then and clean up your spokes. Over time water WILL get inside and they'll actually corrode your spokes and make them look pretty gnarly. You're not going to rust spokes but they certainly won't be shiny and pretty after awhile. The other question I'd have is how many times you can take them off and put them back on again before they no longer fits snugly and will start falling off?q So to me it kind of seems like a more of a hassle then the cool look is worth but to each their own and maybe you "got time for that." I'm definitely in the "ain't nobody got time for that" category. 😂

The problem was addressed according to the owners, the manufacturer is replacing any bad motor cores and they have been assured the problem has been fixed with this and subsequent batches. The motor itself is an outstanding design that uses metal reinforced hybrid gears and can handle 3000 watts continuous and supposedly lasts for over 25,000 miles. My motor is perfect after 350 miles although it does sound a little different than a nylon gear motor especially when backing up. @CitizenCycle925 I don't really think our bike tires have any structural integrity worries up to speeds of at least 60mph. But many of the knobby fat tires that come on bikes are so out of round and out of balance that they make the bike vibrate by the time you get to 30mph. Out of balance is understandable and can be corrected, but I think not being round is an unforgivable flaw in a tire. All of the street tires that I have tried so far have been nice and round. But a lot of the fat tire knobbies that I have looked at will be up to about 1/4 inch out of round. When out of round tires are mounted on a hub motor, you can hear it when the motor is running. Instead of a smooth hum, you get a cyclic noise from the motor that matches wheel rpm as the diameter varies.

The only issue i have is most of us arent wearing gear that can deal with a crash at 40. And with that much speed thats basically a motorcycle and probably should require a license. I'd also be concerned at how it takes rolling over debri in the road since it doesnt have a lot of weight.

A lot of people don't understand what it's like to go 40+ mph on a bike. At 40+ wind (especially crosswinds and air displacement from passing vehicles), road surface imperfections, debris, random events such as animals running into the roadway, misjudging curbs and sheared off road fixtures (think broken signpost stub ups) can lead to catastrophic accidents. So while it's good to have that kind of power, I think the buyers of the faster bikes must adjust their mindsets to better understand the new levels of judgement they will have to use to operate these vehicles. We need to remember the poor examples of bad behavior exhibited by e-scooter riders that eventually led to many local governments banning e-scooters from their jurisdictions.
@vespaman101
@vespaman101 Жыл бұрын
@PhilCherry3 yeah but that's the thing about people. They will exhibit bad behavior. Especially if we wish for mass adoption. Eventually E bikes will be ridden by people who didn't even realize we had to fight for the proper infrastructure. They won't value or care about their rights to ride. They will race and speed and get into dumb wrecks. Look at these teens who vape like crazy without even realizing they were made to help u stop using nicotine. The torch is always passed to people who appreciate things less once mass adoption takes place. The real fix needs to be physical limits locking bikes down to 30mph. No E bike should be able to surpass 30mph with any combination of pedal and throttle. After that it's an electric motorcycle. And an unpopular opinion but I think speeds should be limited in bike lanes in certain locations. We don't need E bikes overtaking and slamming into slower bikes. Same with park trails. I had my ear buds in and a guy blazed by me on a road bike damn near took my arm off. The competitive bike guys go way too fast on the same trails people walk their toddlers on. Or at least just require them to slow down when passing. That'd be fine too.

My 20 year old daily driver truck finally broke something in the shifting linkage. If I didn't have my ebike, I'd be walking 3 miles to the store right now. I'll never sell mine. In fact, I'm getting a cargo ebike as I give up driving at 65 and a pull trailer to haul water. It's 101 degrees right now. Stay safe.

Basically for that speed of bike you are a moped. In California mopeds are only allowed 30 mph, also you are not allowed on the sidewalk with any e-bike, so you need some street rights. They are trying to ban kids from ebikes altogether which is dumb, but if you are going that fast you need those street rights that you can only get with tags and they should raise the moped speed to 40 mph or even 42 mph and that would also be something you would need a California Driver's license or even a CA motor cycle license and it would keep kids out of that speed range. I can't keep up with legal changes, though. I just checked the CA DMV the other day and it seemed different from my last check.

What we need to do, is convince the law makers to make speeds like 40mph legal on an ebike. Restricting an ebike to 20 or 28mph is unsafe on most public roads.

I agree with on it's safer to keep up with traffic, I'm just worried law enforcement won't see it that way?

The only issue I can see with a 40mph bike is the brakes! Exactly how quick (or what distance) can you go from 40mph to a stop? I live in the UK and e-bike law here, like everything else is rather draconian, our e-bikes have a limit of 15mph and you cannot use a throttle at all on a public road

Technically according to the law a category 3 electric bike is to be limited to 28mph, not pedals. Anything over that you need registration and to wear a DOT certified motorcycle helmet. Also cat 3 bikes are not permitted on sidewalks or bike trails. Cat 2 bikes have pedal assist and independent throttle with speed limited to 20mph. Cat 1 bikes have only pedal assist up to 20 mph. These are federal rules. Each county and city has its own rules.

The laws in my town and city nearby just enforced a no bike path or sidewalk law for ebikers. There are patrol officers that ride these trails that enforce it, too. There is also a helmet requirement law as well for these same bikers. If you are caught, you will be fined. Second offense is fine, and they confiscate the bike. Keep it up, guys! It will be enforced everywhere, like flying drone laws, and you will have to ride on the shoulders of roads again and take risks wearing full sized motorcycle helmets looking like dorks. You might as well just buy a motorcycle by then and ride in the street.
