Finally! This is what I've been wanting to know about these machines. I'm a card maker and I'm tired of purchasing the coordinating dies as they are so expensive. This is what I wanted to see. I can't thank you enough. I'll be saving up for one of these. I wonder how many people have purchased one and never used it or rarely used it. Thank you for this video. It really did help. Maybe I can sell some of my coordinating dies and just have the basic shapes. That would be great.

Great video and I totally agree on the machines. I have a CM350, the Scan n Cut 2 that I’ve had for years. Except for the auto adjusting blade I really see no advantages to the DX series. From all the videos I’ve watched it seems much more complicated and I’ve even seen experts who say the 350 cuts out intricate designs more accurately. I seldom add the border and I’ve had it even cut out the individual whiskers on Tim Holtz Crazy Dog stamped images. I also use it to cut tiny label bands for my 1/12 scale miniatures. I previously had a Cricut Explore Air and feel like it doesn’t even compare to the flexibility and ease of use of the Scan n Cut.

@TerryCowans Жыл бұрын
The newer Brother Scan N Cut (DX models) have a "HALF CUT" feature that will allow you to automatically cut sticker paper. See this video -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKPTamyYYqaAZrM -- where she printed on mat sticker paper, scans, then half cuts so that it does not cut thru the page. On the older machines you can decrease the pressure and test that you only cut so far into your paper. The scan n cut is excellent at scanning your images and cutting around them. You can specify the distance of the border around your image too.

Which model do you recommend of the Brother Scan and Cut? Do the DX versions do cut the stamped images?
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
I recommend the CM350. All models will cut stamped images. Here's a chart that summarizes the models & features. I've never found the DX85C model for sale. I made this chart after reviewing the Brother website. My chart -- reddinup.com/scanncut/patterns/ I do no believe the extra cost of the DX is worth the price difference (detects thickness & quieter). Plus the DX is larger and newer, they may need to fix the problems with it (mat & scanning issues).

The Brother does not require a computer, so that's a plus. It has many built in basic shapes. If there are specific graphics that you like, I would suggest the Cricut machine. The Cricut Joy is wonderfully easy to use (with a phone app), but if you need to cut large images, I would suggest the Cricut Explore Air machine. My recommendation is to look over the shapes that you want to use, then decide if you have the patience to learn how to get the shape into the Brother machine, or use the Cricut software (can be your phone or tablet or computer) to cut your shapes.

is it possible to make the stamps we see on the video with the scanncut (I mean with bas relief, for example a word that has disconeccted letters)
@TerryCowans2 жыл бұрын
The scan n cut will go around the image. It does not need to be embossed like I did, but it does need to be connected. A trick is to draw a solid line with pencil around your disconnected word. Then you can scan, cut, then erase the pencil line. Hope this helps!

@@TerryCowans You gave a good tip! My question was oriented to the stamp itself, i bought the Stamp kit, and i tought i could make regular stamps (bas-relief/on-relief with separated letters) and I´m finding out after installing it today that the stamps are more "simple silicon stencils" than real stamps
@TerryCowans2 жыл бұрын
@@zinc438 I have not played with the stamp kit. I need to check that out! Years ago I cut a stamp using my cricut. It was a silicone material that a deep blade could cut. Haven't tried the Scan N Cut setup.

Nice to meet you Deborah! There are many images built into the machine. See this video: Built in images -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH7FaWyfrsZ2g5I Plus you can load images to the machine. There is also software you can connect to your machine. I'll do a video soon about these features! Thanks for the ideas! Lovely video very well done. I checked your chart of the scan n cut machines but mine is not on your list it is the very first one made CM550 and I don’t use it very much because it doesn’t scan very well or maybe it’s just me plus mine is not Bluetooth you need to use card to download images. I was very upset with Brother because after I bought it they came out with the ones that have Bluetooth built in. I live in Canada so you can imagine the price I paid for it. Do you know anything about this machine I am Very frustrated with it. Have a wonderful day.
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! That chart is the most recent one on the Brother website, and I swear it changes all the time! Not quite sure of their numbering system, or when they drop off the models! I'm just familiar with the 350 and 650, so I'm not much help. I will, however, say that you need a SOLID line around the image and a well-lit area for the scanner to do it's work. When I first started I didn't realize this, and I wanted to throw it out of the window because I could scan something three times and get three different results. I hope this helps! Good luck!!
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
Also, I found on the Brother site that the 550 is discontinued -- see www.brother-usa.com/products/cm550dx. You might contact Brother and see if their offer anything for upgrading the machine. I know when Cricut had a model that was not printing correctly, they took care of it with customers. Just a thought!

I have been reading comments about this machine and people say the mat does not stick very well and it’s hard to find more mats. Have you had any trouble?
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
The mats, just like the Cricut, do stop being sticky. It's due to the paper fibers get stock to it. If you put it in the sink and wash with a little dish soap and let it dry, it will get some stickiness back. I also use some scotch tape to hold my paper in place too. ~ Thanks for watching!

I bought mine a few years ago on sale from Costco online. I'm not a member of Costco so I think I paid like 7%more than a member would. I believe I paid $174 or there about. So definitely look at those wholesale clubs to get the best price! At the time I did the math and it was cheaper to pay the 7 % than to get the membership just for the machine but it may be worth it in a different situation so definitely check!!

I have a CM250 and I HATE it! Always chops up my images. I think I need a newer one. Yours seems to work great. Not only does it cut up the images, it won’t select everything on the outside of the image. So frustrating. Then the paper never sticks good either. I think there are better mats now.
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'm sorry to hear you are having troubles with your machine. I would hope even their early models would scan nicely! The mats are always loosing their sticky (same for Silhouette and Cricut machines). I use scotch tape to hold my paper in place! Now, the image does need to be a complete line, so use a pencil to fill in any missing gaps, then you can erase the pencil marks. Give it a try!

I have trouble getting my CM250 to work right as well, but I think it's just me. My biggest issue is the blade. I also don't like the mats. Tape sounds like a good solution.

I hear ya. Stick with it. The line is exact, so a lot of what we can is jagged. Tell the border to be "0.04" or more, it will smooth the line a little.

I had to translate ... thank you! Hello, to recover the iron once it ran out of glue, you can do the following: leave the iron overnight with dish soap, the next day you wipe it with a cloth and with a spatula you begin to remove all the old glue, then you clean it well so that there is no glue left. Once dry, apply an adhesive felt, called ZIG JUMBO GLEU, pass it over the entire plate as if it were a felt, only once, otherwise it will be left with a lot of glue. Now you can use your iron as if it were new. I hope it works for you

@@TerryCowans I just attempted that process of scanning in some owls I colored in, took them into photoshop to turn to black, and then to illustrator to make an svg, and then to sure cuts a lot 5, and the cut was off on my test. After you go through like five different programs to cut out what you made, it is just not accurate on the cricut. This machine looks like a dream. Please let me know which version you recommend again. I do not care about noise.

I really wanted my Cricut to work too. I spent days scanning to get it to work. It's just more convenient with the Brother ScanNCut since it has a built in scanner! Sounds like you are at that point too! I think you can purchase the SDX85 (it comes in different colors). Here's a link -- amzn.to/3rgfnHa -- they are currently $299. Hey, Terry I need a question answered. Purchased a 125 scan and cut. What I was wondering is: can I trace around some Tim Holtz die cuts, scan them, then cut them out of poster board or thin chipboard? Thanks.
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
I have not tried that, but I'm sure that would work! Remember to trace using a dark marker on light paper for best scanning results. It also works to trace around any stamped image too! Sometimes I have used tracing paper to make the shape, then I scan and save on my machine for future use! Good luck, let me know how it turns out!

What is the benefit of embossing your stamped images before scanning them?
@TerryCowans3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I like to emboss not just because it makes the black border a little brighter, but when I color in the images, there is a little lip that will hold in the watercolor paint or marker color. Once you start, it's hard not to emboss it! Ha!
