Why You Need a Greenhouse...

It's winter here in Tasmania - having a greenhouse means we can still plant veggies that otherwise would be very slow...or wouldn't grow at all! Also a couple of key tips on greenhouse construction.

Hi John, Thank you for making these videos. I’m happy to have found a homesteader in Tassie. My wife and I purchased a property in Waratah about 12 months ago that we aim to have self sustainable by retirement which is a few years off as I’m only 44. Hi John, You did not mention ventilation . I am in Tassy also but have found in Summer that having each end of my greenhouse fitted with doors covered in Fly screen improves my plant growth . I may have to cover the doors with plastic when winter comes around to stop the frost .

Hi John, thanks for your great videos. Just wondering if you have any issues with garden and the strong Tassie winds? I'm planning a setup and wondering how much shelter I'll need for a greenhouse and if a walled garden is a good idea.

We are reasonably well sheltered by the forest - at lest from the strongest westerly winds. The greenhouse has been OK, but wind is a regular problem with higher veg such as corn and broad beans. Some protection from the worst winds is a really good idea as less wind equals less plant stress and better growth. If you watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/raGYfq2wo7B6abc you will see that we use a combination of paling fences, corrugated iron fences and lattice walls to break the wind and trap heat. How much you need depends on the amount of exposure, but anything that will trap the heat and break the wind is a good idea in Tassie!

Hi John, just wondering if you have heating in your greenhouse, is it necessary? If not will my seedlings be okay when the temperature drops? I only have a small affair and would need to stet my plants in punnets. Thankyou for your very informative videos.

I don't have heating. How your seedlings go will depend on what plant they are and how cold it gets where you live. Caution is best until you are confident.

Yes, but they don't taste very good - not enough sunlight to give good flavour.

Do you need a permit to build a green house in tassie? And if so.. what it cost?

No real idea. You would have to ask the local council. I don't think anyone cares about a small poly tunnel. Maybe they do care if it's a major construction. Sometimes best not to ask!

Cool. Thanks for replying. New to tasmania.. climate different to Melbourne.. your videos provide good advice. Im starting to build my raised garden beds out of iron sheets and your compost heap method. Going do a bit of a mixture of Hugelkultur combined with ur straw bale method. just going to have my garden post heights tall enough to wrap in duratough, yet not too big that it attracts the Midlands council. 😁 Cheers.
