I just shed a bunch of rotating mass off the 2016 Aprilia RSV4 RR by ditching the stock Cast Aluminum wheels for the Factory Forged Wheels. WOW, what an improvement. Worth every penny.
Let's dig into how much weight was shed and how the bike performs.

You only will feel the difference at the track. On street riding, it’s very minimal feel... But, good find.

Some Ohlins suspension and you'll officially have an RF, only better looking...Lol! I love your vids man! I've been subscribed since I started shopping for my '17 RF. Watching your vids actually helped me pull the trigger. I bought the bike at the end of April and have logged about 2000 miles so far (I'm in Ohio, so don't have quite the weather you guys have) and I haven't had the first regret. Absolutely love it. What type of ECU work have you done since you added the exhaust to your bike? I have the Yoshi Race Titanium coming for mine and am a little torn on what direction to go with the ECU. There's just not that many options for the Aprilias considering how rare they are. I'm told the Aprilia race ECU is a good option and won't hurt the warranty. Thanks for the vids and keep em coming.

Hello again MP! The bike is looking so sick with those wheels. And as for the tires you mentioned that you want to go back to the Pirelli, look into the Diablo Rosso Corsa 2. Maybe those tires might suit you better. I’m considering those for myself and riding style. As always stay safe out there and catch you on the next video.

Sounded like you had your radio on while you were in your truck, a little distraction. Dude, I’m so jealous! I can’t even find any aftermarket wheels for my bike. I’m with you, to me, handling is more important than down right horsepower. And less rotating mass improves handling. I love riding La Sierra and Cajalco and over the dam at Lake Matthews. Some of my favorite roads as well, and yeah, you over cooked it into that turn (scary)! But they really look nice and I’m sure they feel nice too!

The wheels turn the bike into a magic carpet. I know because I have an 18 RF w/ the Mag's on. I thought about going to Carbons but the diff in weight from the Mags to the Carbons are not very much.

Actually forged aluminum is heavier than cast aluminum! The only reason these forged wheels are lighter is the design which can be minimal due to the increased strength.

@momo I'm a 35 year riding veteran. I do have a Tuono and an even faster Tuono. Ive got to say that a 200Hp bike can be terrifying at times. 10 years ago....I'd say....I need more power. Nowadays....I'd say....it has way too much. My reflexes are certainly not the same, taking a spill can be very bad at my age especially added to all my other injuries. When you go past the age of 50 and 60 these thoughts come to your head naturally, your thinking process changes. Of course, who doesn't want to be a kid again?

I call BS. The difference you feel is basically all in your head. There would be small differences, but you would have to be riding hard at the track to notice most of them. If the differences were as big as claimed, you would have to do more then adjust suspension, you would have to get it reworked, or put on factory suspension. Confirmation bias is a powerful thing that we humans are incredibly susceptible to it. But if your happier for having bought the wheels, then that's good.

Unsprung Rotational mass is largely influential in acceleration and handling. I can't imagine how that doesn't make sense to someone lol all that momentum is insane. I've heard that for every pound you lose in unsprung mass, is equivalent to losing 9 pounds in total curb weight. That's INSANE.
@MOTOPILOT6
@MOTOPILOT6 6 жыл бұрын
Joonya. You are 100% incorrect. Lessening the unsprung rotational mass is a huge difference that even a beginner would notice. It's like jumping off a heavy Harley onto a Sportbike as an extreme example. To ignore these facts means you've simply never experienced the change. Or you are closed minded. MP
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 6 жыл бұрын
By the time you add in a tire and discs (front), and tire, disc, sprocket and sprocket holder, and chain (rear), the amount of reduction in the rotational mass is quite small. About 1.8kg on the rear. While physics says that this must make a difference to acceleration, I highly doubt that you could feel this anywhere except on the track when you are pushing at the limits of the bike. And on the front you have only saved about 600 grams. From Race Techs "Motorcycle Suspension Bible" p.106 - ".. the rider feels the percentage change, not the change itself." and "Studies have shown that the smallest change that most humans can feel is 10 percent." And this means in general, not just suspension changes. So, what does this mean? Acceleration - Your motor still has to push the total weight of the bike, which is now a whole 2.4kg (5.2lbs) lighter (which is stuff all). A stock RSV4 weighs 180kg (397lbs) (dry). So you have lightened your bike by a whole 1.3%. And that's before you add fluids and a rider. Once these are added, the total mass is more like 290kg (639lbs) (assuming a 75kg (165lbs) rider, plus a bit of gear), meaning you have reduced the mass by a whole 0.8%. If you think your bike feels better I'm happy for you, but don't fool yourself that you are actually feeling a noticeable difference in acceleration. Handling - If your front wheel (tire and discs included) originally weighed 6kg (13lbs) or less, then the change would be noticeable on handling. However, your new rims weigh 3kg (6.5lbs) by themselves. So, unless the tire and discs weigh about the same, or less then you are unlikely to feel the difference. Try removing your front wheel and weighing it. I would be genuinely interested in the results. I suspect you might be shocked at how little weight, as a percentage, you have saved, but if it is close to 10% then I will concede the point. Same applies for your back wheel. Tenaciousdomi - "I've heard that for every pound you lose in unsprung mass, is equivalent to losing 9 pounds in total curb weight." This sounds like total BS to me. Can you back this up with any research or data. It's easy for people to assert things like this, but when properly researched they often turn out to be false. MOTO PILOT - No, I'm not closed minded, but 28 years of experience have taught me that there is a lot of BS floating around regarding motorcycles. For example, you claim more power from lighter wheels. How is that possible? You put on lighter wheels and your engine gets more powerful. Wow, you bought magic rims. I suspect that you meant more acceleration, and as I have already shown, there is no way you can feel the difference in acceleration. Like I said, confirmation bias is a powerful thing.
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is physics. You haven't changed the weight of the part that is furthest from the axis of rotation, your tire. And because it is furthest from the axis, this will have the largest effect. I'm not saying there is no difference. I am saying that on the road, the difference is so small you would not be able to feel it. And unless you are a pretty good track rider, it's doubtful you would even feel the difference on the track. Any perceived difference is therefore in your head. But if changing wheels makes you happier on your bike, that's good. After all, we ride bikes for the way they make us feel.
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with you. I just don't like how he made out there was a huge difference when in reality there would be no practical difference at road speed. Young / new riders might be fooled into spending a lot of money on an upgrade that is of little to no benefit unless riding hard at the track. They would be much better off throwing money at suspension upgrades, for example. Also, there has been a talk of rotational mass effecting acceleration. The reality is that the total mass of the vehicle is by far the biggest factor that governs acceleration. Power to weight governs how quickly you can accelerate the vehicle, and therefore how quickly you can accelerate the rear wheel (assuming no loss of traction), not the other way round. And he has reduced the real world mass of his bike by less than 1%. There is no way that makes a noticeable difference on acceleration. As to handling, I have said I would be interested in knowing, as a percentage, how much of the total rotational mass he has removed. If it is a decent percentage, then maybe he can feel a difference, but with only 600g on the front, for example, I doubt it. And as I already said, he hasn't changed the mass of the part furthest from the rotational axis, the tires. So, I reckon the difference is he feels is mainly in his head. But if he is happier with his bike, then that's OK. I just don't want others to think that this upgrade makes the difference he claims it does.
