This is a very detailed and thorough video of comparing weights from different brands and materials. BST, DYMAG, OZ , Yamaha, Aprilia. Magnesium and Forged and non forged factory wheels too
#OZ #BST #Dymag
AS PROMISED in the video following are the Marchesini wheels weights :
Marchesini M10RS top spec wheels is 7.6Kg combined front and back.

Thank you very much for the in depth videos! New subscriber. I had a 2018 Ducati Panigale V4S with the forged Marchesinis and I installed a Superlite 520 conversion which removed nearly 3 pounds of unsprung rotating mass. I now have a 2019 V4S and am getting the same 520 conversion kit and am also installing the Rotobox bullet wheels. It will be very interesting to see how it handles with the massive reduction in unsprung, rotating mass. I am also curious as to how the suspension will need to be adjusted given the lighter weight of the wheels. Thank you!
@ChasingTenths
@ChasingTenths 4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely on there , you must get the suspension adjusted after that huge unsprung weight loss. I have heard the Rotobox wheels are amazing especially with ceramic bearings option too. Your bike would feel very different after that in a very good way mate. Good choice. The outlining of the Rotobox wheel rim is replaceable and very solid , so even if a tyre changer damages it at least you got peace of mind

Brake callipers next please.👍 Std two piece calipers v Standard one piece cast calipers V Two piece Brymbo calipers V Brembo is lower cost cast calipers v Brembo one peace machine from billet callipers. Weight is very important as mentioned in this video. Brake caliper strength is also very important so it can maintain its shape and not flex too much under high pressure. I would love to come across a video that tested hydraulic pressures and strength of construction because these calipers can go into many thousands of pounds. I would hope they are good.

Hi Brett, thanks for the lovely comment and following.... sorry for the late reply , some comments slip through the net. I have only heard one hour story of Rotobox in Portugal but to be honest I can't condemn a brand one one failure. But I think BST and Thysenkrupp wheels have had some amazing response, I think BMW and Ducati both had huge contracts with BST to make wheels for their top bikes too. So BST are doing something right , I have no affiliation with any of these companies but the steel lining in the rotobox is definitely for strengthening and it makes a lot of sense. My heart still says BST cause of their experience and Thysenkrupp cause its German technology.

With regards to he Piega Gass rear, it is actually lighter than OEM Aprilia forged; the Piega Gass comes and was weighted with sprocket carieer, while the OEM forged wasn't, and that will add about 900gr (without sprocket). Thanks for the video. I hear stories about carbon wheels breaking. Is there any particular brands or types of carbon wheels better than others? Obviously they're a favourite of yours and you have a choice of any and still use them so they can't be that bad.
@ChasingTenths
@ChasingTenths 4 жыл бұрын
to be very honest Steve, I like the normal 5 spoke BST because they have been making that particular one for years and years so I think they have got really good at it but then if you see Dymags and Rotobox , they have a better outer lip which comes out a little more and I think if someone damages the lip , that is replaceable . Carbon wheels are very flexible , they only break on huge impact , which I had at Silverstone but it was a good thing because the wheels destroyed themselves and gave my bike a crumpleZone for impact and nothing else got bent especially forks and all . Carbons is the way forward but only if you start regularly posting time in the fast group. Let me know if you have any questions mate

I compared all the stock wheels of various era and brands to the most lightest and “popular” versions of dymags, OZ, BST. I approached the UK’s biggest retailer a Day after the first lockdown opened and asked them for details of the best selling ones in U.K. there’s no point me comparing wheels which are siting on shelves & don’t get sold or aren’t commonly used. It was about a clear weight difference between stock & most popular sellers. I am just slightly gutted I didn’t have access to Rotobox or Thyssenkrupp carbons but then again these aren’t as commonly sold than the BST carbons I showed with or without ceramic bearings in the video.

Its weird the magnesium r1 wheels are hevier than the rsv4 rf ones?? Magnesium is 30% lighter than aluminium
@ChasingTenths
@ChasingTenths 2 жыл бұрын
I actually spoke to Yamaha tech about it at a race meet once They said that Yamaha had to compensate for pillion passenger weight, road bumps and all sorts of circumstances which might happen on road so they deliberately made the wheels too too robust than they needed too. Yamaha hadn’t put magnesium wheels on their bike since the old racing days so they were really being extra careful hence they ended up being heavy. I personally think they should gone for forged aluminium but it was a great selling piece for them in 2015, people really bought the whole magnesium wheel thing . To be honest it’s excellent of Yamaha to do something different than others

Yes, Yamaha were over cautious about the re introduction of mag wheels from racing to street so they over engineered them for anti corrosion & pillion & bumps etc so these wheels ended up being heavier than Yamaha wanted them to be

would you advice to upgrade a tuono v4 non forged wheels to Aprilia forged wheels or carbon fiber wheels on a tuono factory model 2019 ?

Aprilia forged RF wheels are amazingly light Don’t go for carbon for that Tuono unless you can afford carbons with ease then buy carbons but RF wheels are stunningly light If the bike is used mainly on the roads then RF forged wheels are absolutely brilliant .

I think Yamaha were being very conservative with their manufacturing process, they could have made it lighter but it was the first time they were using magnesium on wheels on a production motorbike which needs to deal with rear passenger , pot holes and bumps etc, so that’s why they seem heavy , it was a good marketing exercise for them but in practical measures it wasn’t as light as it sounds

@@KrazykoolSaurabh138 I don’t think anyone is manufacturing carbon swingarm for most bikes , swingarm needs to have a certain amount of flex which carbon swingarm lacks , hence even in the BMW hp4 race which was a £65,000 bike, they didn’t put carbon swingarm , they only had a carbon chassis with different density of carbon at various points. If I were you I would keep the swing arm normal as it’s a stationary mass and it’s hard to get that swingarm in carbon , I would say impossible even and try to reduce unsprung mass (moving parts lighter) Speak to BST carbons in South Africa if they produce wheels for your bike as in U.K. this bike isn’t there and I haven’t seen carbon wheels that size in U.K. i hope you find the relevant wheels as it makes a massive difference You can also have lighter sprocket and chain, I have made a video on it. And also any moving nuts and bolts made of titanium would also help with weight , you can get them on eBay

@@ChasingTenths I'm more basing this off Honda's catastrophic failure with carbon wheels. Either way, carbon is incredibly weak to chip failure and as a person who has changed tires for race events, we're not exactly gentle with your wheels, I have a lot of tires to change. Also considering you can buy an ovale for the cost of a set of most carbon wheels, yeah, definitely better places to invest your money
