Check out the new Sandmarc Hybrid Filters for iPhone, Google, Samsung and Huawei smartphones.
Why are they called hybrid? They have both ND and polarizer built into the filters. Great for adding motion blur and eliminating unwanted reflections.

Thanks for this great video. What about the quality of filters? Any color shift or vignetting? What is the weight of 5 stop filter. I need to know this because I will use it with gimbal. Can I use these filters with s9 plus?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 4 жыл бұрын
Nice filters. Definitely well made and didn't notice any color shifts. Vignetting was minimal if at all. Wider lenses can suffer from this sometimes, but since these are solid and not variable they worked well. Don't know the weight, but they are light. Probably have specs on the Sandmarc site... bit.ly/ShopSandmarc

1:49 ... in the dark green back ground on the opposite shore you can see the water reflections. This is caused by internal reflections. Its why using filters has a down side that needs to be carefully considered before just assuming it will be great all the time.
@iphoneographers

Yeah that sometimes happens stacking filters too. Main concern is usually vignetting or color shifts which didn’t see any signs of that.

I wonder what the solution will be for these ND and CPL filters for the upcoming Filmic Pro version, first shown at the Apple keynote 2019?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
You mean can you shoot with multiple cameras at once with this ND? Don’t know that answer yet, but seems like it might work. Pretty large surface area to the filter. It worked covering both lenses on the XS Max. We were able to go in to the Tele without moving the filter.

Do you have any issues with the filter clip allowing light to leak in and add ugly flare onto the film?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
Yes have had that happen, but it can happen with any filters if you’re not careful with the reflections.
@asia-focus
@asia-focus 3 жыл бұрын
@@iphoneographers thanks for the reply. Yes I’m very careful - but the design of the clip lets in light between the filter glass & the phone surface & ruins the film with flaring. How can I stop this?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
For me it only happens in some sunny situations so I tend to avoid those or you can try creating a “donut” like you’d use on a matte box with a cinema camera & filters - you could possibly use some gaff tape to block the sides.
@asia-focus
@asia-focus 3 жыл бұрын
@@iphoneographersUsing Gaffa tape on a product is not what I expect when the product cost me nearly AUD$300 with shipping and import taxes. The problem is not the glass. Its the clip being Rounded - whereas the camera 'housing' on the back of the iPhone is square. It simply doesn't fit and never will. And consequently lets in light creating a flare on my film.

Does the motion blur show in native camera app or did you use 3rd party app to make some changes? If that’s the case, which one?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
Motion blur doesn’t have anything to do with the app unless you’re doing purposely slow shutter stuff like for time lapse then it would. So using an ND filter with any app can work to get proper motion blur. The main issue with the native app is you can’t set your shutter speed it’s automatically done. But if you use a filter it will often follow the 180° shutter rule (double the frame rate to equal the shutter speed). Most things I shoot though are with the Filmic Pro app.

I have held off buying any accessories until I knew compatibility with iPhone Pro. I am ordering one of those in the morning. I would like to see some solutions that fit snug to the device. I am unsure of the utility of the add on lenses at this point but these ND filters seem to be an absolute must. I am enjoying the Filmic Pro course.

Still think the telephoto and anamorphic lenses have quite a bit of value. The wide lenses maybe not as much on the newer phones. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the course, thank you!

This filter ruin my videos with some unwanted reflection when used on gimbal. Is there any way to solve that ??
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
Getting reflections when using filters can be a problem regardless of the camera system. You need to block light from getting behind the filter. On traditional cameras you might use a donut to keep light out when using a matte box and filters, so it’s similar here. You could try using some gaff tape and put it around the sides and/or edges so light won’t get in between the two pieces of glass. Have had this happen before as well and the good news is you can see it while it’s happening and so you can adjust but if you don’t notice it there’s really no way to fix it later.

Great video! But around 1:47 or so, was that a light leak? Or was that an encoding issue? Just curious as I'm looking for filters on the Android side of things. These may do the trick.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah the sunlight sparkling off the water must’ve gotten behind the filter and caused a reflection of that in the glass.

You mention the polarizing filter doesn't have much of an effect compared to "others I've tried." That's the ONLY filter I'm really interested in as I shoot photo more than video. Spill it sir! What are the other filters that work better?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 4 жыл бұрын
Just true circular polarizers in general seem to have more affect. Have used ones from Hoya, Tiffen, etc. Look at those along with Moment (think they have a CPL), Freewell, PolarPro, etc. And maybe Sandmarc too.

Anyone know how to eliminate the subtle reflection of the filter glass in the frame/image with the clip on version? I use an LG V60 and the camera housing is slightly raised which means some light is able to leak in under the clip, which creates a little bit of artifact reflection...
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 4 жыл бұрын
Have had this happen, too. You can try flagging any extra light off the lens/camera when shooting (even with just your hand) or try to use some gaff tape to block unwanted light around the filter. Some cage systems like the Beastgrip have “donuts” that help reduce reflections (they go between the lens/filter mount and camera body) much like larger traditional cinema camera setups do when using a matte box. But for a clip-on that doesn’t really work. So it’s more trial and error tbh.

Great stuff from Matthew! Would also say it depends on if you want to just put filters on your native lenses or on third-party ones. PolarPro IRIS ND is great for native lenses and it’s $99 for three filters. Or you can go very low $ on a universal 37mm clip-on.

A warning to UK customers: You won't find Sandmarc lenses here in the UK so be aware that ordering Sandmarc lenses from the US might end up being a very bad experience. I ordered lenses, filters, case, and carrying bag. It would be much easier to buy Shiftcam lenses . They are pretty good and available in the UK for next day delivery at no shipping cost. Unfortunately Shiftcam doesn't have nd filters so I chose Sandmarc. Sandmarc a customs clearance company which is the worse thing I've experienced whilst shopping online. I've been ordering products from the US for about 15 years and never had an experience so surrealistic , so irritating and so unpleasant as the one I am having with the company Sandmarc uses to deal with customs in the UK. If Shifcam had filters then it would be the best company to buy from. Not only because their lenses are good but because they have a big advantage over Sandmarc, Beastgrip, Moment etc: They have an in case lens mount for iPhone which is compatible with most iPhone cases. I have a UAG carbon fibre which is incredibly strong and protective. it's a body armour. I can use Shiftcam lenses with my UAG case thanks to Shifcam's case lens mount. The UAG is far stronger and more protective than Sandmarc or Shiftcam cases for iPhone. You can't even compare them. And forget about those clip mounts . They are just no good. I just hope Shiftcam will make filters soon. They have a complete line of lenses available, unlike Moment and Beastgrip where almost everything is sold out. And, unlike Sandmarc, they don't impose on you the bad experience of having to deal with a customs clearance company from h...
