Awesome video, thank you for the comparison. I’ve believed the upgrades have been meant for every other year for awhile now, as in the 15 Pro is for 13 Pro users while the 16 Pro is for 14 Pro users. Granted they want to upgrade, if I’m remembering correctly when this comparison was done for the 13 and 14 it yielded similar results with the 13 being better in lowlight video and the 14 being better with photography.

Neweer 7x lens is heavy and awkward to use without a tripod but it’s only £90. Stg. Works on the main 24mm lens and can still activate the 5x lens on iPhone although can jump back to 24mm. Focus is great in good light not so good in anything less. This 240 is way to expensive and you are using it digitally rather than optically unlike the Neweer. I will wait for price cuts or something better and cheaper. Thanks for sharing.

This is optical not digital and designed specifically for the 5X iPhone tele. The Neewer and Sandmarc are good but really hard to focus. This ReeFlex works like any lens including with autofocus so shooting with it is very easy.

Other than the lack of shallow depth of field, phones can pretty much do everything from dynamic range to multiple built-in lenses to 10 bit codecs like ProRes Log. If you need accessories the gear is inexpensive and light weight. I'm glad he brought up mics because documentarians get their dander up when you talk about the new small wireless mics. It is so much less intimidating and encumbering to use one of these mics though.

Lens manufacturers pretend that there are no other smartphones except Samsung and iPhone. At the same time, iPhone and Samsung are not leaders in mobile photography, but manufacturers of cases and lenses ignore this. This is very annoying. I do not want to be in the iPhone sect and in the Samsung sect, my camera phone is Oppo and Vivo smartphones. I need a telephoto lens with a universal mount that will not be useless after changing the smartphone in a year.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 7 сағат бұрын
iPhone and Samsung are the best selling accessories and that’s the main reason they do it, however, many of these lenses will work on other phones if you use a universal cage like the Beastgrip Pro and an adapter, as needed. But that is really geared towards video and not photography.

Guys, they didn't shoot the whole movie on an iPhone, they probably shot the majority if not a good chunk of the movie on iPhone and had Apple contribute to the production or marketing budget, while shooting purposefully with proper Cinema cameras. Just like the film, The Creator did not use the fx3 for the entirety of the film, nor did civil war use the Ronin 4D for all scenes. Both of these films worked in Arri camera footage. Unlike those films, there's really no point in shooting with an iPhone and slapping on a 90K lens on it other than some sort of viral marketing push. You don't shoot professional movies with an iPhone for any other reason despite the sensor quality and pro res log, which most cinema cameras can do in-body anyway. The lengths you have to go to to get comparable quality footage that will age appropriately (see the film Tangerine, which was also shot on iPhone) is a real disadvantage. Similarly, there were very few scenes in the Creator that could not have been shot with an fx6, but the whole point was to solidify the fx3 as a proper cinema camera to scrappy KZbinrs despite it not having built-in NDs. It's worth noting Sony had shot a horror movie on the a7SII. So these stunts have been pulled in the past. It's not really relevant to bring up how the first film was shot on video cameras since at the time only low budget films could be done that way and Danny Boyle had not reinvented himself in the years after train spotting. Digital filmmaking didn't really become a thing until George, Lucas and then later Michael Mann advanced the tech.

Keep in mind there are lenses and rigging built specifically for the iPhone to expand its effectiveness in different lighting situations - this is not only the iPhone being used in its base form - with that being said it still gives us no excuse to not shoot with whatever you have and figure out workarounds to create the shots you need- all in for this type of production. To be honest, the camera is only one part of the production to make a good narrative - maybe using whatever you have is a good idea - if we continue to state “oh I can’t make this or that because I lack this or that” then really we are limiting ourselves - no amount of amazing gear will mask a bad plot, a bad narrative, bad writing, bad acting, bad framing or bad editing.

@@iphoneographers Because when you have a budget like that, you shouldn't be doing stupid stunts like that. Also, the movie Unsane looked like total trash, and I'm afraid that a movie I've been looking forward to would make a decision that could result in it looking like total trash too. I can already tell from the trailer that they turned the halation up in post to an annoying level. Could that be because the iPhone looked weird? Probably. Comparing apples to apples, the XL1 equivalent to today's market would be the FX3/FX6, C70, or C300III, not an iPhone with a giant lens modification affixed to the front.

STRANGE PROBLEM: My shutter is locked off at 180 degrees and my ISO is set to 200. While shooting in a well lit room for example, my exposure is where I want it to be until I point the camera at a darker area of the room like a corner for instance. Once I have pointed the camera at this darker area of the room, my exposure gets darker automatically. Nothing that I do to try and resolve this problem seems to work. Any suggestions?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 6 күн бұрын
Is there any bright light in that darker area, maybe part of a window or a lamp? Also, are you using Apple log? Sounds like a dynamic tone mapping issue, but normally it will brighten dark areas - even when settings are locked. But it’s disabled when shooting Apple log, so if you’re shooting standard Rec 709 video then try Apple log.
@chumcool

@ As I stated, I point my camera at a DARK area of the room. No other light, just a dark corner of the room that has no light, and when I do this, the camera image seems to fade to black.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 6 күн бұрын
Well you actually said darker area of a room and so that’s why was wondering if there was any point of light at all because dynamic tone mapping reacts to high contrast scenes. You didn’t say whether you’re using Apple log or not, and if you are then you should probably delete and reinstall the app (save any video files first). If you’re not, you need to try that. Good luck.

I don't feel like you could film something ambitious as a hit box office movie with tons of celebrities plastered all over it on a phone of any kind, but Apple has certainly got the basics right and this movie shows it's more than possible. You can get those close up out of focus shots without a dof adapter on your iPhone if you’re using apps such as ReLens, Cinema P3, Moment, BeastCam, or BlackMagic Cam, but not out of the native iPhone camera app itself because it doesn’t allow you to use manual or lock focus.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 6 күн бұрын
All apps perform the same as it relates to depth-of-field, so it makes no difference there. The deeper DOF is due to the small sensor size of the camera. But using a third-party app is of course great and the way to go. But note, you can lock the focus in the native camera app.
