No kidding. The mini has me fizzing over the brim. I just hope it goes down in price sooner than later. At 165 a month you would think they would practically give away the equipment. But I guess Elon knows my type; I only need service one or two months a year. And honestly I wouldnt be surprised if cell service comes to the dead zone i go to sooner than later.
@Jeepnbeer
@Jeepnbeer 2 сағат бұрын
@@eagle94haslanded I hope to see the price be more reasonable when you combine both the internet(mini unit) and the cell phone together. In the future I think they will offer a “bundle” deal that will be more reasonable. They may do that now not sure.

As a former SIGO from Fort Bragg, i wouldsuggest stakes for your tripod for wind situations, always extra cables as they always break, and consider a vehicle roof mount, the starlink works in transit..mounted flat, ,...and 2x batteries! or more, especially for cold weather ops when batteries die more quickly!

My Starlink Mini came in today and was able to get it up and running. I used my Yeti 1000X solar generator with my Boulder 200 briefcase solar panels to power it. I bought a Ridgeline water proof case to store it in. I bought the Ridgeline at JobLots for $59. I love the introduction with faraday bag protection!! I was able to make phone calls with my cell data off. And was able to get online , and so was my family members aswell. Thanks !

Came into the comments to say this. Transceivers for high-speed serial data (which, as you note are built into USB-C, lightning, etc. cables) attached to long lengths of wire is near worst-case scenario for EMP survivability.

I'm a ham radio nut. Also a telephony programmer. With that said, this starlink kit would be cool with a raspberri pi running a pbx, and a few SIP phones to set up a small call center for disaster areas. All low power too. There are plenty of other SIP options out there too, options are endless as long as internet is still working globally. Otherwise radio is your only comms.

If you're really worried about EMP protection, it's much cheaper to just buy copper mesh and line the top and bottom of the box. Though the bags in this case also serve as more padding, which is good. But to anyone else: Just buy some standard bags.

I heard somewhere that portable battery banks have a possibilily of permanently dying if it gets drained to zero. What I was recommended to do was to keep it fully charged before putting it away, and checking on it every, and if needed, just top it off once or twice a year. If you got any old phones lying around you still intend on using like backups, then I'd charge those more frequently before they get put away. I do it for my various portable battery banks whenever I go to change my smoke alarm detectors during daylight savings time change.
@jonathonmcmillan9410
@jonathonmcmillan9410 3 сағат бұрын
Storing lithium batteries fully charged is actually not good for the battery. They have a self-discharge rate that is dependent on the state of charge, meaning they discharge faster from a full charge. Battery manufacturers recommend storing at 50%. I've designed lithium powered consumer electronics sold commercially, FWIW.
@AquaTech225
@AquaTech225 2 сағат бұрын
80-85% is fine to store at. Some of the older “solar generators” had issues if the battery went down to 0%. They wouldn’t start accepting a charge again. But I believe I seen a work around on a video was charging just a couple minutes directly into the battery vs charging into the mppt charge controller. Or something like that an after 2-3 minutes direct. I guess it than sensed some kinda voltage or something. Than would start accepting a charge the regulator plug in that goes through the charge controller. It was something like that. You can find atleast a video or two on here how to get around it and it charging again. An I’ve always heard 80-85% storage charge. I also keep mine with a topped off charge also. But normally each week I’ll connect something to it and drop it down to the low 90’s an back up. Just to have some voltage movement in it. For a couple years now. On a couple Bluetti power banks/solar generators. An haven’t really noticed them holding any less juice from full to about empty. I use mine mainly for window unit and fridge for hurricanes and just any power outages. An everything seems to run just as long as it has new. My newest power station actually says to calibrate the BMS system. To run it down completely to 0 to it stops outputting any power. Than recharge it. But my other one I believe is one of the ones ya don’t really want to run down to a flat 0%
