I like the wheel cleat idea. For similar situations I keep tire chains in my full size 2wd van. Last week I was up hunting and made a very poor choice in roads and when I finally got to a spot to turn around immediately got stuck in the mud and slick moss/grass plus the road had been going down hill so I was now fighting gravity. I aired down, and broke out my traction boards but ultimately had to chain up and I was able to drive out. Pays off to be prepared 👍

I tell you something else I carry in my truck when I go into the woods. I carry several smaller pieces of 4x4,2x4 and a piece of 6x6 all about 1-2’ long. All scrap pieces. I use them for cribbing if I get stuck or if I need to drop a trailer, etc. I just hide them under my toolbox out if the way. I also carry a single plastic parts store ramp that I can drive on to raise my truck up on to work under if needed and a single jack stand. Never know when you may need that. Also it can serve as a traction board in a pinch.

I hunt my 72 acre wooded back yard, & I don't own a pick up truck. I tilt the cargo box of my Kawasaki Mule down. I attached a compact cable come-along to the rear roll bar. I clip the other end of the come-along to a shortened rope on the front of the sled, and then I winch it into the tilted cargo box. Once it's in the box, I just need to flip the cargo box back up & fasten it back down. The sled is held in the cargo box by the come-along whether I flip the rear gate up or not. It beats lifting a deer into the cargo, especially when you are alone.

Good trick. Those Diesels have a hard time in snow. I take chains when the weather goes bad for my Ford150's. The only worry was snow too deep and the wrong temperature. You have to twist and turn to keep it from jacking you up off the gripping surface. That may require your to find more clearance. If the snow is powder I have seen it flow a wake like a boat in the water. Once packed or packes and frozen, you are looking for trouble. Back when I had older trucks 4X4, I could put chains on the front and the truck was unstoppable. Design tollerances changed forcing chains to the back like further back in my life. It was more tenuous but still worked but not as well when retrieving other vehicles from the over the hill in snow. I have buried a post in the ground in front of a hole that swallowed a Dodge Buckboard one time. It had a winch to pull it out hooked to the post. That Dodge was rough but tough.

I use a 4-wheeler ramp! And the jet sled been doing that for 30 yrs! People saying they seen 2x4s throu the cab an into a persons pelvis?? That has to be a pretty freak accident The frame on truck would have to be crushed to back of cab! This isn’t a semi flat bed that doesn’t have a headache rack an hauling pipe or something!

Thats right, and here in the NC mountains I rarely have phone service. So to get help who knows how many miles I’d have to walk before my phone worked or someone picked me up. I’m mid forties now and though not old 6-8 miles in the mountains up and down would be rough. Good hunting this year…ours starts this Saturday sept 7

@@Tbowie13 yeah same boat here but without the mtns. Where I hunt there is very limited cell service and could be a 20 mile walk to get help, especially in the late season when nobody is out there. Only way my wife would let me go. Good thing to have as even a twisted ankle can be life threatening in the right situations

Sir, my experience as a disabled outdoorsman is... 1. Keep the 2x4's in your truck as they work great for using as a pivot when loading heavy stuff or arguing with a trailer you want to hook up or unhook from your truck. BTDT. 2. If there are trees around you can also use young trees like you suggest for the 2x4's. BTDT. 3. Carry at least one spare rim, but it does not have to match your truck or tires. You can use it as a removable 4 season fire pit (the BLM & USFS don't like using rocks on dirt anymore) and you can use it like you did the 2x4's to either get yourself unstuck (particularly when high centered) or as an impromptu jack for a flat tire. BTDT both. And as I have seen done but never had to do, you can in some circumstances use it and either rope/cable/chain to improvise a winch (provided it matches your lug nut pattern). 4. You said carry a shovel. I disagree. Ideally, carry a #2 prospectors shovel like what you have in your truck, then a long handled #2 shovel AND a 4 tine garden fork. A what!?!? You heard me, a 4 tine garden fork. When you're stuck somewhere and nothing to grab on to like trees or boulders because of the packed soil & rock mix (particularly when you near a creek or river), the garden fork can act like an anchor for your winch/come along and it makes digging up buried rock immensely easier, in case you need rock to fill in a hole or rut so you can drive out. BTDT. Man, so many of those are "BTDT", I earned the nickname "Quagmire" (before that sick perv from Family Guy ever got on TV)! (I seemed to get stuck more often on a Sunday than any other time, and I was told of Luke 14:5, so it seemed fitting!) The key here is unless you're a super brain like McGyver or you have a few extra tools to even the odds.

@@andreweddy86 i hope i can explain it right i took 1-2x4 at lenght of width of truck so it would fit fairly snug pushed down in those groves in bed liner lag screwed turn buckles at each end which had caribeners so then i could clip it onto the bed tie downs i also used old bed frame rails to help beef up the 2x4 and then took 4 2x4 cut them not much longer than the height of that long one screwed em togehter to make 4x4 repeat that step so you have two then one lay flat screw those so they are standing up and slide that under your long board drill couple holes for winch couple bolts now 💪 then those turnbuckles come into play you can tighten those down to help kep it from rolling forward under pressure

Had a 2x4 in the bed of my truck a few years back never again allways tie them down guy pulled out in front of me after the wreck 2x4 came through back glass and stuck in the roof of the cab just missed my wife's head by inches
