Why you should train with old school thin leather bag gloves with no padding (aka: “speed bag gloves”) Learn the value in doing your bag work with actual bag gloves instead of padded boxing gloves.
Check out this excellent video on the boxing history of the thin bag glove used by the all time greats of old school boxing by the late, great Paul D. the Punch Professor: • What SECRET did Liston...

This is golden advice. I have old school bag gloves, and never used to consider the nuances of proper positioning and alignment with regards to how they aid in understanding efficient fist articulation on impact (granted I was a lot younger and inexperienced...). Over the years since, I've begun to see the value and virtue in these as opposed to just normal boxing gloves in getting better at punching; essentially, the closer you can get to simulating bare-knuckle safely and intelligently (less padding), the better you can understand the finer details to a proper punch and hand anatomy, as well as being realistically more cautious and aware of how to sensibly throw a punch without injuring yourself. Less is more as I say.

I would think that the greatest advantage to not wrapping and using thinner gloves is conditioning the tendons and ligaments of the wrist and forearms against impact. Of course being able to throw a proper punch with a twisting motion on the end is easier as well. Great advice with simple thin leather.

Yeah greater conditioning for wrist strength, and like Ramsey said greater ability to articulate a strike in a natural semi-gloveless way. Not saying doing bag work with regular style training gloves is a bad thing, but bag mitts feel way closer to a bare handed strike so way less chance of missing and glancing or hitting the bag at a dodgy angle bc your fist was forced into lining up with the glove, rather than the other way round.

This is so important. I think a lot of us forget that we are not planning to go pro, but are training for self defense. Jack Dempsey mentions that a little in one of his book; 90% of ppl that train boxing just want to learn to protect themselves and too many trainers treat them like they are going to become pro fighters Emmanuel Stuart said to use bag gloves too. He said too many fighters these days have hand problems from babying their hands too much. (Just don’t over due it, especially if you are new)

Buy some traditional Chinese Iron Fist lineament (Dit da Jow). Things like inflammation (bumps) vanish in about 5 min flat (along with 85% of the pain). It prevents fist injuries, helps to improve the bloodflow in the area, develops much stronger tissue and bone density. It helps makes the skin tougher, but also.. more pliable / flexible... so that it will not be dried / brittle and flaky. You can see an example video someone did on its bruise healing potentials, by searching "Dit da jow Proof". The stuff is a miracle in a bottle. There is Nothing else like it. Not even close. Edit: Make sure to get the hand made Jow (all natural plant based ingredients, in an alcohol base).. Not the synthesized garbage. The synthetic stuff doesnt work for beans.

I see what you did there Ramsey. This is your homage to the late great Punch Professor and all his vast pugilistic knowledge. I have seen bag gloves in pictures before and always thought they were solely for the speed bag, but I would also see pictures of old school fighters wearing them. After watching this video I will definitely get myself a pair so I can better articulate my punches. I train on the heavy bag and double end bag using 16 ounce gloves with wraps on my hands. I hit the speed bag with just my wrapped hands. I will definitely be putting a pair of bag gloves on my Christmas wish list this year.

As one of those poor kids, I started off using the cheapie no padding gloves and have stayed with them for the last nearly 40 years. Only recently did just start using boxing gloves because at 47 my hands were starting to get sore after working the bag for a while. It still doesn't feel exactly right using the boxing gloves on a bag. I appreciate the extra "boom" to my shots and the work it forces me to put in to keep my hands up, but it takes some getting used to and I'm not sure I like it. I'm sure part of it all those years of being told to not hit the bag with my boxing gloves. Part of me wants to give up on the boxing gloves and just go back to the thin bag gloves and maybe get an aqua bag or something.

This is the main reason I use mma gloves for bag work. Sure there is some padding on those. But not enough to drain the feeling of impact from my knuckles. It gives me a bigger feel of how hard the impact actually is on my fist/arm. It doesn't just dissipate the force through the glove.

I love my bag gloves. I've had the same pair since probably 2005. They're Everlast leather gloves with, what feels like, one sheet of cotton batting as padding, and then a really thin cotton lining. They look goofy as anything because they have obnoxiously long thumbs, but they work like a charm. The grip bar feels might be a piece of plastic or wood. I bought them exactly for not skinning up my knuckles! I didn't have wraps or gloves for quite a while when I first started and my bag was really course leather and the label was a square of leather sewn on top. So every time I threw a hook and I hadn't stepped in enough, I'd skim the surface of the bag and catch the edge of that label. It was horrible. I had to teach myself how to fight and how to train to fight, so I didn't know exactly what wraps were for - I mostly used them to cover my knuckles (I'd bleed through two pairs in a two hour session). Bag gloves really were a game-changer. lol.

The problem you mentioned with the padding between the thumb and fist preventing closure of the fist completely also exists with the "bar pad" near the top of the palm of bag gloves, or at least the ones I have. This pad makes it impossible to close the fist so that the proximal phalanges are clenched at a right angle to the metacarpals and messes up fist/wrist alignment. The big heavy bags my first martial arts school had were fine punching bare fisted, but the 95 lb. Everlast bag I now have is made of such course material if you glance off it you open up the skin on your hand. I've even abraded the skin on my knees kneeing the bag through gi pants. My point is, some bags require you to wear bag gloves for safety, others do not. Proper skin conditioning (punching sand, makiwara, etc.) can also help prepare the hands for bag work, although a course canvas bag will probably still require some kind of gloves.

I have been using these gloves for years. I cut the ends off the four fingers parts- originally, because my hands are unusually large- even for someone of my large size, and I needed to do that to make them fit. Now, I do it because I feel like it is a more natural fist. My thumb actually curls comfortably around my first two fingers. Try that sometime with some cheap gloves before you toss them out and see if it helps

I engaged with the late great Punch Professor in one of his videos to verify that fighters used wraps with these. Outside of the Dempsey book (which I always thought was Dempsey's way of helping Depression era kids not have to buy gloves) my understanding is that fighters always wrapped under these. One pivotal design difference is that until the 80's these bag gloves didn't have the curved finger tips. The modern glove that most closely replicates these gloves is the Rival RB5. I personally love the old Everlast 4308 and 4307 with the metal grip bar. You can occasionally find a good pair on eBay. The only other glove I really like is the Gil bag glove with Velcro. Its a little big at 8 Oz's but it is very nice.

Interesting about the no hand wraps thing. I believe the late great Paul mentioned in the comments in one of his bag glove videos that around the time he was being taught boxing, almost all boxers used hand wraps with these. I think he also had a preference for the ones that look like they're wrapping around your hands as opposed to the pre shaped ones. I gotta ask, is there really any difference between the two? Another question, the awkward hand positioning in modern boxing gloves, is that due to the attached thumb? I remember Paul also talking about this in great detail and talked about how boxers were throwing left hooks and landing with the thumb so regulatory bodies decided gloves should have attached thumbs. How does the hand positioning of those old boxing gloves with the movable thumb compare to a modern pair with the thumb attached?
@RamseyDewey

That’s exactly why modern boxing gloves have an attached thumb! I used to have a vintage pair of those old gloves with the detached thumb about 15 years. I wish I still had them so I could show you exactly what the difference was.

Certainly makes sense. Big cushions on your hands prevent you from angling your wrists properly. For wraps, I found them necessary when going hard against a heavy bag. Not the stretchy wraps, but the ones that pack tightly. I assume it's because it kept the shape of my fist. I can do all the knuckle pushups I want, but it can only help so much when hitting a heavy bag hard. If the wraps do maintain the shape of the fist, then it's probably preventing the soft tissue from being mis-shaped too much during the high impulse forces on impact. Knuckle pushups can't help in that regard. Then again, one can argue that hitting so hard isn't all that great on a regular basis. I feel it in my shoulders and spine. Maybe it's form. But if you have to modify your form in going from moderate to heavy, that may be too heavy.

I think this is imperative to develop hand striking strength...I usually start out with a round of 2lb weights...then 2 rounds in 14oz...and 3 rounds in 10oz...and finish with 1-3 rounds of very thin neoprene bag gloves...the cheapie ones from Walmart are surprisingly decent
