Thanks to the growth of "Big Data," jobs for statisticians are expected to grow an astounding 34% by 2024! By studying statistics-the science of learning from data-you will be prepared for a career in one of the world's most in-demand scientific fields.
It has never been more important to study statistics. Statistics isn't just about data analysis or numbers; it is about understanding the world around us. The diverse face of statistics means you can use your education in statistics and apply it to nearly any area you are passionate about such as the environment, health care, human rights, sports and practically any area.

I love statistics. I am a double major in Statistics and Economics; I'm almost a final year student. Where are the stats lovers? I love Roger Penn.

Hi, I love statistics and I am currently taking Calculus I and I am getting my AA in Maths by next year. I would like to hear about your experience as a Statistics major.

Well, I am at the end of my second year, it's very intense .... not a lot of person takes advance statistics courses so no matter the class size advance courses will be intense. It's intense for me in the sense that we are all competitive with each other but we are also supportive and work collaboratively with each other so for my class mates, "team work makes the dream work" is the motto we help each other a lot. It's challenging and we all have bad days, what makes majoring in Stats. and Econ worth while for me is even though it test your limits and pushes you to the edge, you only grow and discover skills and capabilities you never knew you had. I initially wanted to major in Stats from solely a mathematical stand point but I fell in love with econ and stats which I was doing the courses as free elective. How has your experience been thus far?

WOW! its good to hear a Stat's major perspective. My major will be Statistics or Probability and Statistics. I looked over Joint Major in Maths and Econ, for that, I will need to add two Econ courses in my Education plan. I see you prefer & love Econ and Stats rather than just Stats. And I want to know, are they equally valued the same or having that Eco makes your major stronger? I must take two Computer Science classes which I know I will not like but my school requires it. I prefer Econ over CS. Although I am just working towards my AA degree, I am overwhelmed. I am new to the US and it took me a while to decided that I want to major in Maths and now I have too much on my plate.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Economics makes me an over all better statistics student; that goes visa versa for me. Intuitively, I always loved Mathematics from day one. In High School I was torn between focusing solely on Sciences and Business so, For me with my O.C.D I did them both Accounts and Business and all the Sciences ... Early out I wrote Chem off. I got accepted to do a physics Major .... Getting an acceptance letter to do physics only made me realize I didn't have an authentic love nor passion for physics, I learnt that the only reason I loved Physics was because math. So, spending only a final semester in an academic yr doing uni. Physics the following academic yr I did preliminary math. some other math courses and intro stats. Naturally I excelled In that. So I fell In love with a Social Science double major in Stats. and Econ. but I still love math. I tried doing a the double major as a free elective and pursuing a math major ... all in all i dropped the Mathematics major and stuck with Statistics and Economics. After Micro and Macro which I haven't done yet, there Isn't much to an Econ major than computation or analytics. So, it's great to do both simultaneously. Statistics is more woven, and integrated into Economics than you would think areas from basics principles to Bal. of payment to national Income account to GDP... Income Distribution"Lorenz curves" those are all created through the computation of statistics to aid with interpretation and decision making. Principles of econ. is secretly macro (big picture) stats and a stats major is like microscopic where you look at the big picture via analysis of small, integrated sections. Statistics makes Economic look good it's like a trophy wife and Economic makes Statistics understandable via the application and computational processes, the integration of both is just pure beauty. Truly amazing.

Oddly enough I am not a US resident ... at least not yet. When I tried to carry my Math. credit along with that of a double major it was tedious. You will just have to look at what is it that you love even though you are doing an AA degree. What will you be the most happiest pursuing? With me I took on an unnecessary tedious semester because what would my life be without Mathematics. I loved mathematics I am obsessed, but If I were to pursue a General math degree I honestly wouldn't. I stuck with doing Math. because of all the strongly Math. integrated Statistics courses it offered. Doing a full on Mathematics Degree is unnecessary to me, in my view as much as I love mathematics and numbers I feel like whatever you couple mathematics with is like an espresso. It's an avenue to articulate, and express your math. skills, I just do that personally and best through a Stats. and Econ. degree. I'm slightly a workaholic, my mind love the challenge of packing a lot on my plate and excelling against even my own odds. I suffer from an addictive behavior I have with authentic learning, I love learning stuff, I love to excel also. So, the question for you just now becomes what do you love right now and what makes you the happiest? You love Econ and Stats so just think about that try conceptualizing yourself in an area you will see yourself working in long term and would you love the work you will be doing? That's what I feel like it all boils down to, do you love this thing and would you pursue it long-term ..... Plus in my eyes a Stats. and Econ. major isn't that far deviated from an actual math degree, both areas are just application aspects of math. Just remember whatever decision you makes do what makes you happy, I feel like you know intuitively what that is already and you may be experience a calling just a strong pull towards it.

I like that you showed a lot of women in the video, too. I teach Psychology to undergraduates, and over 70% of my students are female (if not more). As you probably know, in the U.S., we tend to discourage women from pursuing STEM educations (though this is changing very slowly). I think videos like this can help reverse that long-standing trend, though. I will definitely be showing this to my future students before I introduce them to descriptive statistics (a topic I try to get students interested in, but it's hard to convey how awesome stats can be to freshman undergrads, especially when the real power of stats lies in the inferential methods).

t4exanadu Very true. More than 40% of statistics degrees go to women, and the field has great gender equality compared to some other STEM fields. www.washingtonpost.com/local/women-flocking-to-statistics-the-new-hot-high-tech-field-of-data-science/2014/12/19/f3e2e486-62ed-11e4-9fdc-d43b053ecb4d_story.html

This video REALLY reminds me of Hour of Code. It doesn't hurt to say that computer programming and statistics overlap OFTEN! (I mean, for Gods sakes I heard "data and information" towards the end of the video, which is what a computer program alters,)

I can't wait to take another math class that I'll never use. Here I am, watching another video where educators try to frame a class as having real-world relevance while ignoring the fact that 90% of people don't use this knowledge in their everyday lives and thus it stagnates and becomes a waste of time and resources.
