our fried snacks are all very good. but they are all fast food. other than that we do have some good potato mashes which I personally love like boerenkool. they aren't anything crazy special but they get the job done. other than that we do have a very rich food culture of Dutchified foreign dishes. and we tend to excel in cooking if you go outside the tourist areas.

In the 1960s, many migrants from Hong Kong came to the Netherlands and opened Chinese restaurants. At that time, the Dutch knew little about Chinese cuisine, but did know Indonesian cuisine. The Chinese then put Indonesian dishes on the menu, but cooked in the Chinese way and adapted to the Dutch taste. In 2000, there were more than 2300 Chinese-Indonesian-Dutch restaurants. A Chinese restaurant owner once said 'in every Dutch village there is a church and a Chinese (restaurant)'. So the nasi goreng here is completely different from in Indonesia. The Chinese-Indonesia-Netherlands cuisine has also been recognized by the Dutch government as Dutch national heritage. And not to forget the popular Dutch delicacies in Indonesia such as poffertjes, kastengel (cheese sticks), klappertaart (coconut cake), kroket and martabak manis (melted chocolate sprinkles with cheese) And another funny fact is that the Dutch army feeds their soldiers with Indonesian food. Rijsttafel isn't "not too common" in Indonesia. It is very, very rare. As far as I know, there are only two old (dating from colonial days) restaurants in Indonesia still serving it. You do see a sign for "Rijsttafel" often at restaurants on Bali. But what they're serving is what we in The Netherlands would call "Nasi Goreng Speciaal". Another dish that can only be found in The Netherlands (and Flanders): Babi Pangang. From the name, one would assume it's Indonesian. But it can only be ordered at Chinese diners / takeaways. From what I've read, it is actually a dish created by German immigrants in Indonesia, and brought to The Netherlands after the war. And of course "Patatje/Frietje Oorlog", the French fries with sateh sauce and onions and mayonaise (although in Indonesia, this can also be found, brought there by people who've been in The Netherlands). And from what I've heard, it is the favourite Dutch dish among German visitors. Speaking of Germans. My mom once brought a whole pot of homemade Rendang to a potluck at a German wedding. The Germans were amazed with this "Holländische Gulasch". Licked the pot clean.

Rijs Tafel or Rice Table in Indonesia is called "Prasmanan" .........it is an every day tradition in house holds...... .we usually have a bucket of rice and several dishes ,most commonly consisting Lauk (meat ,or chicken ,or fish dish ) , Sayur (vegetabel dishes) ,and Camilan (additionality ,Tempe ,Tahu ,Fried ,mashed potatoe ,eggs ,etc) and some tradisional Crackers........there are lots of variaties to combine ,since there are more than 300 ethnicities......and it doesn't have to be that a certain ethnic only cooks it's tradition food....... I am a Javanese ,and my family sometimes make Rendang (West Sumatera dish) or make Rica-rica (North Sulawesi dish) ........

I have done research to Surinamese Javanese food for Helena from the video: when the Javanese labourers were taken to Suriname, they didn’t bring all the ingredients like gula jawa or turmeric. Many years ago in the late 90s when I was studying abroad, I visited my research supervisor who was on sabbatical in Amsterdam. He knew I was Indonesian, so he took me to an Indonesian restaurant there and said "oh, you have to try the Es Cendol here, it's amazing!!". I tried it and said... "whatever that is... it's not cendol" 😛

Indonesian food in the Netherlands are brought back by Indos (Eurasian people living in the Indische.) If Risjttafel is rare in Indonesia, that's understandable. Because Risjtafel was commonly eaten by the Dutch in the Indische. And there were pretty big social gap between natives and Dutch. Klappertaart, bami, babi ketjap are some of Indo people's food. Which has deep root from Dutch East Indies. Conversely, Dutch influenced Indonesian cuisine as well, such as Semur(Smoor), Pastel, Kastengel, Nastar, Kroket, Bistik, Brenebon etc I suggest you listen to Tante Lien's Geef Mij Maar Nasi Goreng to understand the context.

In Indonesia, the word Risjtaffel may not be common. But we have a word called Prasmanan (also translated in English as Bufffet). In Padang restaurant it's called Hidang styel. So it is common, just called differently.

The sweets are all called kue lapis here in Indonesia. The red ones are kinds like mochi, we also call them kue peper. The middle ones is also called kue lapis surabaya. Those sweet treats are ubiquitious on celebratory events, whether it's birthdays, wedding, Lebaran, christmas, chinese new year, you name it. 😆

My parents came from Indonesia to the Netherlands, grew up on this. However, hate to correct you, the wealth of the Netherlands came from trade in bulk goods, timber, grains, dried an cured fish, etc etc

I often wondered why there were no rijstafel restaurant in Australia, being so close to Indonesia. Now it makes sense that rijstafel is actually Dutch, not Indonesian. Flamingo Paradise near Scheveningen was my favourite.

Rijsttafel is very similar to Nasi Padang with dozens of side dishes. Rijsttafel has side dishes from every corner of Indonesia. Many Dutch people especially from the older generations are born and grew in Indonesia and are very familiar with the language, culture and cuisine. They pass on their experience and knowledge of Indonesian culture to their children and grandchildren. Also, there are many people of Indo descent which are Eurasian communities of Indonesia in the Netherlands. Many are repatriated to the Netherlands after the independence of Indonesia while the rest remained in Indonesia or migrated to other countries.

I've given patatje oorlog a try, and I was only disappointed that the pindasaus wasn't as spicy as the bumbu kacang used in gado-gado and batagor, even if I requested it to be spicy. Since these chips shops aren't specialists in Indonesian food to begin with, even if the country has a higher affinity for Indonesian cuisine, it'll be difficult to find a shop with my expected profile of peanut sauce taste.

This is why I say there's a difference between Satay sauce and dutch peanut sauce. But fellow Dutch people cannot seem to see the difference. Its annoying, especially when Chinese run snackbars use satay sauce instead of dutch peanut sauce and chinese indo restaurants use Dutch peanut sauce for their satay. Its disappointing all round.

If u wanna try Dutch food with Indonesian influence, try Nasischijf and Bamischijf. They’re unique to the Netherlands and rarely to be found outside the Netherlands. I would recommend to try the other ones like Rijstaffel, Nasi Padang, and Kueh2 in its country of origin, Indonesia.

2012 I was staying in The Hague (DenHag) for 3 days. I shared the room with a German lady. She was confused when I told her that I didn't want to eat Indonesian food in many of Indonesian restaurants there 😂. Well, I came all the way thoùsands of kilometers from my home country to taste the local food, not my own home food. So we had local food together then.. 😅

Look for Isaku Iki in the Hague. A tiny restaurant, with an amazing owner and the most delicious food. As someone of Chinese-Indonesian descent, I can attest to its authenticity!

@@mormacil Currently there's pretty significant number of Indonesian/mix Indonesian descendants also living in Belgium since a handful of the Dutch citizens in Dutch East Indies were originally coming from Belgium before migrating to Dutch East Indies during colonial era.

I think nasi padang might be a parent of rijstaffel given that it's the closest Indonesian thing to the latter that I know of. Might Congolese (& to a lesser extent, Rwandan & Burundian) food be similarly popular in Belgium even beyond poulet moambe like how Indian food is to UK?

Lebih mirip disebut Prasmanan, beda skalanya. Karena di serve di meja. Kalau prasmanan terpisah sama meja makan. Menu nya sama, berbagai menu dari berbagai daerah didalam satu piring.

Some cakes and food that Imdonesians have known & believe are dutch, are actually german. E g. Kue Soes (Windbeutel), marble cake (Marmorkuchen), Semur (schmoren=process of slow cooking) is originated from Sauerbraten but in a sweet version from sweet soya sauce. Nastar was from Portuguese mini pie with pineapple or ananas. Fact is the Netherlands do not have own cuisines exvept few. The cuisine found there are mostly originated from other european countries plus from Indonesia & China

As an Indonesian living in the Netherlands, I honestly find Rijsttafel awkward, unappetizing, and overpriced. Most Nasi Rames in the Netherlands is not authentic; it leans more toward a Warung Tegal concept, where you can choose what you want. For someone unfamiliar with the original, they might select whatever they think looks good, and suddenly it turns into something like Nasi Padang. That's my point-be cautious when labeling something as authentic, as our perspectives might differ.

I don't think Rijsttafel is marketed for Indonesians, it's meant to be for outsiders to introduce them to several Indonesian food in small portions so they could have a small taste of everything.

There's just way too many taxes and permits that you need to fill in before opening a restaurant there hence its expensive. Very different from back home where all you need to do when opening a restaurant is know how to cook

@@KajiRider1997Correct, Surinamese are not expensive. I think the reason Indo restaurants are expensive is that there are not many of them. Spices can easily be found in any grocery store inside the Netherlands. Simply, they are greedy and want to earn as much as possible

The rijst tafel is a derivation of nasi padang that was originated centuries ago in West Sumatra before the Dutch created rijst tafels in Indonesia and brought back to the Netherlands after they were kicked out of Indonesia in 1945 Check on google rijst tafels wikipedia and you will see the similarities and the history of rijst tafels In indonesia they dont have rijst tafels anymore because this is a symbol of colonialism of the Dutch Today the rijst tafels dissapear in Indonesia
