Jonas Gössling believes that the traditional way of learning an instrument often kills our natural passion for making music. Together with the KZbin Pianist Costantino Carrara he shows how technology can create new ways of learning that are more engaging and accessible.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I agree with what has been sAid - strict teachers, boring beginner songs, intimidating and boring music theories, and inaccessibility to music instruments; and the frustration of learning over KZbin

I was one of those kids who gave up within weeks but I have always listened to classical music and loved singing. Just recently I picked up piano and learn with KZbin, I still can hardly read scores but with video it does not matter anymore. Playing piano makes me so happy.

Very cool! With this kind of wait-for-the-note playback (I've seen it in Synthesia and some light-up Casio keyboards), I think it doesn't encourage proper rhythm, but I suppose if the notes are correct, then the next level would be to play it with a metronome and keep up.

Came here thinking they would give a high level overview of improvising/ adding in my own melody to a song I like instead of just reading sheet music (just like Constantino does in all his songs). Instead got a 17 minute ad, nice!

I love Flowkey, it is great to speed up pieces/song learning. The big issue with it is that at some point you want to practice directly from the scores without an ipad and you can’t, as the scores cannot be downloaded or printed. So you either memorise whole songs or become iPad dependant which is not great. I guess it is possible to transcribe the scores into paper, but that would take a long time. I have contacted them and they told me they have considered the idea, and they might implement it in the future, but so far, and some years have already passed since then, they haven’t acted on it. If I ever find a similar app with the score download/printing facility, I’ll probably move into it.

I've seen a lot of tech like this lately....I wonder if it actually works?? And what about technique? It's not easy to learn technique by doing a tutorial like that. It's very easy to learn things wrong and develop bad habits that are hard to break. These bad habits can be really bad for your hands and wrists, resulting in injury, arthritis, carpal tunnel, etc. What are the solutions to these problems when learning by tech like this? I'm glad there's technology out there like this for people to learn from. Honestly, piano is such a great instrument to learn! I'm just a little concerned about the possibility of developing bad habits and not learning everything that should be learned when learning an instrument.

OK, I am 57 yrs old and saving up for my 1st digital piano. I cannot afford lessons. My concers, up to now, have been: will I be able to do it, will I be disciplined enough for practice and would the inevitably slow progress, bore me into quitting? Those concerns have just melted away. Thank you.

You can buy a used piano or synth and just start practicing with tutorials on KZbin. You can get a great synth for as little as $50 and can be rewarding once you start learning, which will motivate you to keep learning.

All features that I like about Garage Band piano lessons on my Mac. I can slow it down, loop the section I want to practice more, and if I play the wrong notes they are yellow or red, but it allows me to continue playing through my mistakes. I think that is better than just stopping. I just wish it had MORE lessons!

I agree about the whole music lesson things - I really didn't like them. Fortunately I had enough patience to stay in them long enough to learn how read music, because once I could do that, I could teach myself any sheet music, given enough time. This concept is interesting and great if you aren't interested in learning to read sheet music, but for now, sheets are for me.

Inspiring.,.. but it did come across as a sales pitch from 'Dragon's Den'! I don't know if this reference is known outside UK. Entrepreneurs pitch to super successful Business people, the Dragon's, a share of their fledgling company or idea in exchange for financial help, mentoring and contacts the Dragon's have. Most are eaten an spat out, a few get an offer more lucrative for the offering Dragon. Terrific talk. I want to play and sing both Freddie Mercury songs, and classical music. Always have. What's stopping me is past frustration at teaching myself unsuccessfully for a year in college at weekends when I'd sneek into piano'd music practice rooms with dull beginners books & limited ability to read music + horror at how hard it was to make different movements with each hand, & feet! Now I think I'm too old to learn and one hand is deformed by arthritis. I still want to do it though. It's a shame they didn't put a link to their website at the end. They must've known realistically the talk was a sales pitch! So a link would've helped.

ths app learn you play prepared songs. But it cant learn you music - after using this app, you are not able to improvise, to express emotions, to play technicaly easy. Technique is important to overcome limitations. Expresivnes is important to make music talk to heart. And this app learn you to "play" right pitch at right time. But this cant be called music.

I’ve wanted to play for soooo long. Finally I bought a keyboard and using an app I bought to play. The app is teaching me how to play, in terms of technique. Notes. It’s an amazing intros for someone who hasn’t play. But you’re absolutely right it’s not teaching, well, the heart of music. So I’m learning how to play by ear and add emotions. It’s a journey for sure. The app I use is definitely my foundation, and I hope to wean myself off and play from my heart as I progress :)

Looks like flowkey. I tried it, and to be honest, it was not a good experience. Didn't work propperly until I attached my Keyboard via usb to the pc. Additionally you get absolutely no feedback regarding dynamics. My playing sounded (still does, I am a beginner) horribly but I pressed the right notes, so the software proceeded. And 20 € a month is far away from cheap...
