The US has been bringing back the remains of young men who died on distant battlefields from World War Two and Korea. A number of Iowa men who died on the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor have been identified and reinterned back in their home state, next to their loved ones. It is not just a symbol of the highest honor, but it brings closing for surviving family members who didn't get to see the final resting place of their loved ones. This sadly is not the case for the over 900 men who remain entombed inside the USS Arizona far from the states they called home. They will not be recovered as a result of the structural deterioration of the ship and the government dedicating it as a tomb right after the war. I one day want to visit the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and pay my respects to all who lost their lives that morning, but especially to the 25 Iowans who remain with their fellow shipmates.

You guys might like "The Saluting Marine" Every year a group of thousands of bikers with Harley Davidson's ride around the capitol in memory of prisoners of war and missing in action servicemen and women. Back in the early 2000's I believe, a marine (Tim Chambers) stood in the median of the street where the bikers ride and he holds a salute for hours while the parade continues. After standing and saluting for an hour or more, you can see the struggle of the marine to hold a salute. Body shakes, profusely sweating, and swaying, but yet, still holds a salute til the end. An amazing guy to check out. Not sure if they have any 10 to 20 minute documentaries about him, but I know there are a couple 2 minute videos about him all over youtube. So, I recommend a watch of some of them.

On the small island of Ocracoke, North Carolina is a cemetary whose ground is leased in perpetuity to the British Commonwealth for as long as the four British WWII sailors are buried there. Their ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat with all 37 lost. Four soldiers washed ashore and the people of Ocracoke buried them beside the local cemetary. Each year, on the anniversary of the sinking, there is a ceremony for the sailors, with representatives of the British Royal Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. Plaques near the graves tell the story of Bedfordshire and list all the names of those who died, and a few lines from poet Rupert Brooke: “If I should die think only this of me,That there’s some corner of a foreign field That is forever England.” While we know the names of these young sailors, I like to think we honor their memory and thier defense of the US.

As far as the sentinels and live weapons go, only the lead carries a pistol with real rounds. The rifles are unloaded (supposedly a guard in the 40's fired a warning shot to scare off a burglar and the round hit a woman in the leg hundreds of yards away off the base). That being said, they are real rifles and make very effective clubs. The bayonets are also real, judging by an incident several years ago were a guard accidently stabbed his foot when he mishandled his rifle and it fell blade first on then through his foot. I can't find any reference to a tomb guard stabbing anyone, there are several recorded references to them clubbing vandals or protesters who ignored verbal warnings.

The lineage of the 3rd Infantry Regiment ("The Old Guard") goes back to a battery of artillery created to guard the arsenal at West Point in 1783. At that time, the entire American Revolutionary War's Continental Army was being dissolved, except for 80 me (one battery of artillery and one company of infantry). It is thus the oldest surviving U.S. Army unit.

Although i do remember the guard who performed the inspection a pistol on his belt that I’m sure is loaded. Death doesn't wipe away the atrocities anyone has committed or elevate only the convenient, positive history that some want to push. Your story/book of life should include it ALL. Death doesn't and shouldn't absolve that, even for Churchill. Please tell a Holocaust survivor that the death of Hitler or a Nazi camp guard who may have done some positives in their lives only that positive should be heard or talked about in their history.

The 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) is stationed at Fort Myer, which is connected to Arlington. They provide ceremonial support to the White House, Congress etc in the Military District of Washington. That includes ordinary burials at Arlington for the Army (there are ceremonial guards from Navy and Air Force also). There is a movie (1987 I think) starring James Caan called "GARDENS OF STONE"....while it's not specifically about the guards of the Unknown Soldier it does show what the other burial units do. The Guards of the Unknown Soldier come from from that pool of personnel (Infantry only). Behind the grave/monument and down the hill a bit is John F. KENNEDY'S grave. Out in the background is the Potomac River and Washington DC.

Thousands of soldiers died unidentified in WW1&2, Korea, and Vietnam. They were never accorded the honors they deserved because no one knew what their deeds were and their families were never informed because no one knew whom to notify. The Tomb is a way to tell soldiers "We believe this is the honor you deserve, even if we do not know your name," but it also gave a place to mourn for those families who were never notified, but would have realized by that time that their son, father, or husband was not coming back. So it was also a way of comforting those families by saying, "We believe this is the honor your son deserves." Can you imagine showing up with a wreath for the only memorial you have and seeing it covered in graffiti?

The tomb of the unknown soldier represents all fallen soldiers in foreign wars. And my respect goes to every guard. If a forest fire sweeps the land of the tomb, the guard will not leave his post. If the blizzard of the century hits, the guard will not leave his post. If a nuclear bomb is headed pin point for the location. The guard will not leave his post. There's no higher respect to anyone in the military not even a 5 star General.

I read that the Queen's guard do not routinely carry ammunition but if they is a potential threat they do load their weapons when on duty.

The guards are carrying an M14 carbine, "30-06". With a 6 round clip. And yes they are loaded. American military will not wear a head cover in doors, if they are not armed. If an American soldier is wearing a head cover indoors or guarding anything, They will be armed and loaded.

1. The M14 is not a "carbine" but a full sized rifle. 2. It's caliber is 7.62x51mm NATO or .308. It is not .30-06. The older M1 Garand was a .30-06 rifle. 3. The M14 is normally loaded with 20rd magazines, although there are commercially available ones with small capacity. Again, the older M1 had an 8rd capacity. 4. Their rifles ARE NOT loaded at any time during their guard shift. If you watch the changing of the guard ceremony, the rifle is cleared several times: at least twice during the inspection and once when the guard is relieved by the next shift. At no time is a magazine ever inserted into the magazine well. Guards don't even carry a magazine on them.

I understand but dont..... I undertand the reason for the tomb but the strict military guard presence I dont get. If its not anything valuable then why the need for such security? Why not a regular security detail why military? Or why not just military guards instead of elite guards? I dont get paying tons of money for a military to be there but then again we spend billions on unneeded military things..... flame away military people you will not change my mind about where my money goes and how the military spends it. Also to add does it really matter how far some ones medals are from one another on a uniform? So you could be the elite of the elite when it comes to combat and physical training but wait your medal is 2mm to the left to far your no longer elite!

Because it's more about honor and the commitment that we don't leave anyone behind. The dead buried there not only lost their lives, but their IDENTITY. To honor that sacrifice we watch over them. The ceremony is actually to respect the lost, not for gawking tourists. The ceremony would continue (and DOES continue) even when there are no visitors. As for the perfection of the uniform, precision of the ceremony, etc, that is also honoring the dead. They deserve perfection, and that kind of effort to be perfect shows how much you care. if you can't put that kind of effort in, you don't deserve to be on the Tomb Guard detail. BTW all members of the 3rd Infantry are fully qualified infantrymen. Their secondary role is physical defense of the National Capital Region (Washington DC and the surrounding area). So they aren't just ceremonial soldiers.

They have their guns loaded esp when President, Prince Harry etc Their bayonet is real. One time when they were checking the guns on plaza he dropped it with the bayonet going thru his boot but he didn't change his position . Then he went back to barracks n saw it went thru his foot n bleeding. They do go thru show n heavy rain. I love your reaction. I just learned the Queen's guards are trained to go out on the field n fight for freedom

when you guys do finally make it to the US, if you can make it work for your schedule you should try and get to Kansas City to see the National World War I Museum, Liberty Memorial. It is the only national museum and memorial, that I am aware of, that isn't in D.C. and is well worth the trip for anyone interested in history.

Even though I am an American, I would think the Queens guards would most definitely have bullets in their guns as it is their job to guard the palace, royals, and staff.
