The flag is in the Smithsonian. The British had already sacked Washington DC abd burned the White House. That armt was threatening Baltimore. The fleet was threatening Ft McHenry. Had they been successful, America would have been dvided in two----much like Sherman did to the south during the Civil War. It basically would have meant the end of the USA. The story is embellished---but basically true. Our flag must never touch the ground, nor bow to any other. Yeah after downing the fort these ships were meant to take the harbor and land troops to flank the cities defenders. Which is a fascinating story in itself where in the first moments of battle the British Commander General Robert Ross was killed by one of two teenage American sharpshooter who fired near simultaneously. This threw the British command into disarray and helped win the land battle.

Something that choked me up was when the US was playing hockey in Canada. The audio at the venue went out and the Canadian people started singing the American national anthem. We also sung the Canadian national anthem in the US for the same reason. That's love between the people of two countries. God bless America. God bless Canada. Canada played an important role on 911.The people of Canada 🇨🇦 took in Americans, fed them, made sure we had a place to sleep and shower. A few even drove Americans back to their homes in the US. Unfortunately, the flag doesn't represent the same things to everyone. To us vets, it is a physical representation of the hardships, sacrifice, and loss of being one of less than 6% of Americans to answer the call to duty. To some it represents a history of oppression, inequality or corruption, etc. Both viewpoints are equally valid. We knew going into our respective branches that we were the ones making the sacrifices so others wouldn't have to. The fact that most people are ignorant of what freedom actually costs is proof in my eyes that our sacrifices, no matter how great or small, were not made in vain.

If you want to know if this would happen today, ask any US Marine. So many still do to this day risk thier lives for the flag. When we left Vietnam a marine wouldn't get on the helicopter without the flag. When the embassy was attacked in Beruit the same happened some men died and others risked thier lives for the flag. As an old vet, from childhood, we were taught the Pledge of Allegiance and The National Anthem. Having been a member of THE largest volunteer military force in the world. We wear the flag with pride, we fly the flag with pride, and when asked to do so, we also give of ourselves the honor of coming home draped in that flag. To our patriots, if you pay the ultimate price, then the ultimate honor is being draped in The U.S.Flag. I am a veteran and have provided service to my country and I am humbly grateful for your appreciation for our service. Air Force Munitions troop from 2013 -2019 with 1 deployment from January - August to Al Udeid Qatar. I'm 73 now and served in the Vietnam War for 6 years. Every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner I get choked up and sometimes shed uncontrollable tears. This also has significance because during the fighting styles of the Revolution, War of 1812 & the Civil War, they had to have flag bearers ON the battlefield. So through the smoke & noise, you could see your flag & orientate accordingly. The man carrying the flag was a TARGET, when they would fall, another would have to pick it up. Knowing he had a great chance of being killed for it. We honor all those who literally DIED for the honor of bearing the colors. 🇺🇸

I lived in Baltimore for a few years, and some articles revealed that many who gave their lives to keep the flag up were freed black men. Maryland ended slavery at the end of the revolution.

If right-wing politicians in this country would join the left and seriously address racial inequality in policing in this country -- rather than simply complain about people using their First Amendment right of expression -- then the protests and "disrespect," as you call it, would end. Thanks for doing this. I am an USAF Air Force veteran. Canadians are good people. And I know your anthem from being a lifelong hockey fan and hearing it sung, and singing along, at hundreds of games - I'm a senior citizen - where a Canadian team was playing a US based team. Personally I am an American veteran who served 23 years in the Army Airborne Infantry. I believe that those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it. I joined in the 80s and have gone to every conflict we’ve had since desert storm. Including the war on drugs. I have 19 ops in South America 2 in both Iraq and Afghanistan. And I can tell you that I am very disappointed in the way our government has gone to sh*t. Our young people just don’t care about our history or what our troops have and will go through not to mention the families. I’m very grateful for anyone who takes the time to look at the past and have sympathy for what we stood and sacrificed for. Especially those from other countries. I’m very tired of the youth of our country protesting and spitting on what we’ve fought for to keep them safe. Thank you for your appreciation for our, the vets, love of our country. You definitely earned a thumbs up from me.

I grew up not far from Fort McHenry (not Ft Henry). My father received his cancer treatments form the VA Hospital there. All but one of the males in my family served in the military. My father was in the Army in WW II, 3 of my brothers were in the Navy and obviously from my picture you can tell I was a Marine. My son was in the Army (Iran and Afghanistan). So we are and were patriotic. I learned the history of the National Anthem in Jr High School. The only male in my family who is not still alive is my father. I am sure that all still alive in my family including my two sisters and my daughter stand proudly for our National Anthem and for our flag. I have 2 special days this month. The Marine Corps Birthday 10 Nov. and Veterans day 11 Nov. P.S. I did not realize you 2 were Canadian. Nice to know that neighbor.

Whitney Houston 1991 singing the National Anthem is as good as it gets - it was so popular it was released as a single. Whitney gave all proceeds to the war effort. Ray Charles singing "America The Beautiful" in the middle of a baseball stadium at his piano brings me endless joy & pride. Both are ALWAYS worth a reaction video to.

I remember back when, there was a movement going on to replace " The Star Spangled Banner " with " America the Beautiful " as the national anthem by the usual suspects. Which made me laugh, because " America the Beautiful " is just rewritten words to " God Save the King/Queen " Britain's national anthem. Back then it was being touted as a ' warmongering ' song. Because those people weren't taught what the event was that played out that led up to the writing of the poem that eventually became our Anthem.

47 years later Abraham Lincoln put Frank Key Howard, the grandson of Francis Scott Key, in prison at For McHenry. Frank Howard was a Baltimore newspaper editor and his "crime" was penning an article disagreeing with the Civil War. Here's what Howard wrote about being imprisoned there: "When I looked out in the morning, I could not help being struck by an odd and not pleasant coincidence. On that day forty-seven years before my grandfather, Mr. Francis Scott Key, then prisoner on a British ship, had witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry. The point when you spoke about the sacrifices made by those before us hit me personally. My ancestors have fought in every single conflict/war that the United States has been involved in. My family arrived on these shores in the 1630s. My father made a point to tell my brother and me that he did what he did in Vietnam, so that we wouldn't have to go to war. They fold a flag when you are buried after serving in the military. He has a case with his grandfather's flag, his father's flag, and a space for his flag. He said that there will only be three flags in this case. It stops with me. That hits hard. Thanks for the reaction video. It means more than you realize.

As far as I know, it is taught in the curriculum of most east coast states, which makes sense because it is our regional and national history. Cant speak for other regions of the nation, but that's a large portion of the US population who do learn it.

The American flag is a symbol and forever a reminder of those who fought for and sacrificed their lives for a belief in forming a new nation and FREEDOM that we will not be governed by any other nation but by its people. We proudly honor our flag for everything it stands for and honor our veterans and those who serve in our military today to keep America free. I was a signalman in the US Navy between 1976 and 1982 ! We were in charge of of rising the flag at sunrise and taking it down at sunset ! The Six Fleet Admiral was on our ship so all the other ships had to rise it at the same time as us !
