My instructor told me that I need to figure out a way to get over the fact that I’m in a wheelchair. So I broke his spine, and now he’s in a wheelchair too. Even footing, so to speak.

This is what Jiu-Jitsu is like for me. Miss the takedown. Get took down onto my back, Then they always pass my guard, I'm screwed. Get tapped a few seconds later. It's been going on for a year and a half. I'm just about done with Jiu-Jitsu. If there's somebody that just won't ever get good at it I believe it's me. And yes. I get the "Just keep coming" speech alot. There have been some people at the school that have worked with me and tried to help me with certain techniques but it doesn't seem to be really working for me.

I’m the same, been doing it on and off for almost 4 years. I’m healthy, come from a boxing background, but get overwhelmed with the drills, can’t seem to follow them. I’ve trained at different gyms, but have the same problems. Done PT’s, the lot. When I roll, I guess I’m just scrambling for life, but not really subbing anyone. Don’t necessarily want to stop it, but it’s a thought going into the gym and feeling bad about it all, it’s not fun. I’m away to turn 35, maybe Thai boxing is the way forward for me.

The biggest obstacle in my way to get truly good at my art was not trying to "keep up with Johnson's". Which is an old term, sorry. I only wanted to focus on the new and the next so I could keep climbing that ladder. It took somebody not only handing me my ass, they also took it away a few more times. And it was the same person that told me "you will never leave yellow belt" . And i took it the wrong way. What he meant was it's mastering the basics that will make you competent . Like the saying goes "you do it until you can't get it wrong" . That's when you start training in a way where you aren't just trying to get past that technique to the next one, you are actually trying to understand it. To make it part of how you react. And man it is a relief. You just kind of slow down and get to work. You don't mind running something over and over because now you know why it was there to begin with.

I ask my coach that all the time and all he ever says is "keep turning up". It's super frustrating. I've had about 13 years doing various martial arts (currently blue 2 stripe in bjj) and i've always been super technical and always questioned what I should be working on either specifically or conceptually.... so to hear "keep turning up" it just doesn't help at all.

Question, i have been practising the von flu choke and learned that in theory it might be possible to get it from a full mount position as opposed from side position and a grounded guillotine,....what do you think?
@nickr.t.70035 жыл бұрын
Probably easy to sweep you when you try that choke from mount, since you commit both hands to it you won't have a good base...

I'm not getting better after 5 years, weights 5 days a week, bjj 4 days a week, eating well, not drinking or smoking. I'm just doomed because everyone else is just superior. Best to give up.
