Just got my msf card in the mail this morning. I'm planning a trip to the dmv in the morning. The bike I chose has clip ons and it feels completely different from the bike I spent all last weekend on. My plan is evening, low to no traffic , side street and empty parking lot practice. If I still feel uncomfortable after a couple weeks with the clip ons I'll transition to a more upright handlebar. I got the 700 clx sport and have noticed quite a few have chosen to switch out to a more upright handlebar.

I just went out there and kept practicing everyday(even if it meant stall or three) so I learned rather quickly. I knew it was common sense to learn and master low speed maneuvers, slow downing and stopping. The better control you have the more confident you'll be. Being able to navigate safely and smoothly out of parking lots, gas stations, neighborhoods, tight spaces and a area prominent with people is essential as a rider. If I were to tell anyone, don't worry about going fast learn how to go slow. Driving slow is essential to driving fast.(if you get my point of view)

Agreed, I spent so much time low speed driving in storage yard. It was definitely a learning curve. When started going on the streets realized why it's so easy to get in trouble on a motorcycle. The faster you ride the easier and more stable the motorcycle feels. Gives a false sense of skill. Doing slow speed figure eights brings back to earth.

This is one of the things the examiner may ask you to demonstrate during the moto-test in Germany. Ride 25-30 m in a straight line at walking pace (that is no more than 7-8 km/h), without deviating too much, without going over the speed limit and of course without dropping the bike. What they will definitely ask you to demonstrate, however, is to do a slalom at walking speed. Therefore knowing how to use the clutch and rear break is an absolute must. Also, you look down, you fall. You always ALWAYS choose a point in the distance, fix your gaze on it and off you go.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Neat test! If you just look down, it doesn't mean you'll fall...maybe new riders would tend to start leaning over about to fall but it's not 100%. You can look wherever.

Long time viewer, and love the messages you promote Greg. I've watched and practiced many of your techniques & belts. I've always been an advocate of "comfortable being uncomfortable" as it leads to growth when you're intentional about it. Because of your exhaustive library of top-notch vids, I've advocated to all those who also seek out improving their safety & skill through PDR (practice, drill, rehearse) to visit your channel. This leads me to the greatest accomplishment, not my skill set, but getting my better half on 2 wheels. 1st day in a clean/open lot we spent hours building muscle memory with different drills on smoooooth throttle control, feeeeeling the clutch's friction zone, and squeeeeeezing the front brake. Proud to say she rides way better than many "beginners" I've witnessed though she may have only about 10 hours on the bike. It truly shows how poorly many value their life. Has it been perfect? No. She's stabbed the brake at first like most, but now you can see the forks compress, tire squish and nothing is abrupt when she uses the brakes. Ironically I remembered this video after we did the drills, and she just rolled her eyes at me.

In the UK, slow speed riding at a walking pace with the examiner next to you is part of the off road test. Even in a car park however it is expected (a fail point otherwise) that you do a shoulder check or life saver BEFORE setting off. This is drilled into you in training to make that process automatic so as to avoid any mirror blind spot problems.

I said it on another video, but I think it’s worth repeating. A lot of skills are transferable between a bicycle and a motorcycle. I think a lot of folks would be best served by starting on a bicycle. You can drop a bicycle a hundred times and just pick it up and keep trying. Cheap to fix if you somehow managed to break something. Little to no intimidation. Balance, steering, how to lean and counter steer, braking- it can all be learned on a bicycle. The only things that you really can’t replicate is throttle and clutch technique.

And my mom lived in a trailer park where the owner of the park wanted motion of less then walking speed from vehicles. Or he would yell at me. I can remember I would pull in and stop. Then in first gear I'd come off the clutch w NO throttle. The computer if you release the clutch slow enough will keep the bike running. Kinda like a lawn mower in thick grass. With my digital speedo I could sustain speeds of 1 or 2 MPH by slowing the bike with the rear brake. And it stayed running. I honestly enjoyed riding by the old fart at that super slow smart ass slow speed. He got where he would shake his head cuz it was stupid slow. But I guess it was good for my skills as well. It’s a rough world out here for us short riders these days. Bikes didn’t use to be made for 6’ tall and up. Now they almost all are unless your riding cruisers etc. But any Adventure bike standard is super super tall so this stuff is a must.

I've ridden scooters and electric bikes before...same basic concepts of counter-balancing, rear brake, vision, etc....now just no clutch...good! lol one less thing to worry about.
@obligatoryprofile6 жыл бұрын
thanks Eddie, this is a super helpful exercise! the rear brake is what enabled me to slow down to walking pace years ago, but apparently it's been keeping me from going any slower. having both feet free to feel the pegs helps a ton with balance, and my arms are loose enough that I can feel the front tyre flexing and working into the pavement below 1km/h or so. weirdly satisfying feeling, haha. I guess that's what racers mean when they talk about feeling front-end traction? anyway, cheers, and keep the advice coming!

"thanks for the 20k subs" looks at the 135k subs < 2 years later. There's a reason you've got subs. This is great. Thank you. I'm a smaller rider with a bigger bike and clip ons. I'm still doing the work, no excuses, but I'm tempted to swap out for bars to get me more upright and allow me to use the bike without as much lower back stress and/or weight on the bars. While I know practice is the primary way to improve, do you think moving to handle bars so I could be more upright and have less weight on the bars would make it significantly easier at low speed, or would I be wasting my money?

What kind of bike?
@jamesbarros9504 жыл бұрын
@@MotoJitsu a 96 VFR750 RC36-2. It's got 80,000 miles on it, but it's the old gear driven cam model that is almost unkillable. You'd think they'd be pretty upright as "sport touring" bikes, but I think this thing is built for someone who's 6'2" not 5'8". I got it for $850 because I needed transport, but now that I've got a car again, I've started to kinda dig the bike and I'm considering putting some money into making it a little nicer than it is right now. Trying to prioritize what I should do for the best return on investment. also, as a re-entry rider, I'm not sure if I just need to suck it up, get stronger core and get used to holding myself up with my back for longer so I can keep my loose elbows and arms in the current riding position. I saw your video with the S1000RR and while you make everything look easy on the tarmac, I'm watching your hand position to make it happen (which is about what I need on this when I go in tight to the tank) and that is not amazingly easy, at least not for me right now. I know training can overcome equipment, but I'm also trying to stack the deck in my favor.

Bike Mechanic here, just a comment on the clutch thing, Eddy is 100% right, you won't damage a motorcycle "wet clutch" doing this type of slow speed practice or slow speed maneuvering. One thing you can do, to add extra protection, is using fully synthetic oil like Amsoil, Lucas or Rotella T6. The number one way wet clutches get burned out, is burnouts and clutch up wheelies. that is slamming the clutch closed, with lots of RPM, and high load on the drivetrain.

I just bought a 2016 Moto Guzzi V7 II Special today. It has a single-plate dry clutch. Seems like it should handle this type of loading without issue. Any thoughts?

First of I just wanted to say your videos are probably the best riding videos out there. I wanted to say that first becomes my comments can come off as a critique and not giving the person in the video any credit or praise. At 06:13 and 06:32 it sounded like it rev'd. Did you let go of the clutch a little to give the bike more momentum so it didnt stop? Or did you not let go of the clutch the entire time during this demonstration? I was hoping you were going to speak while coasting and say something like "see right now im just holding the clutch and havent let go of it yet." or "im holding in the clutch but I had to just feather it a bit to give it more momentum so i can continue showing you how to coast at this low speed just for the sake of demonstration" etc. How does the bike continue to move forward though if you have the clutch squeezed in or is that just momentum from the initial release of the clutch to get you moving? Its almost like theres a slight bit of clutch moving it forward.. like its at the threshold/friction zone of where the clutch starts to grab slightly.. or is that really the reason for this demonstration? At first I thought this was a video to just show how to sit on and steer a bike moving really slow without using the clutch.. So is this really a video on friction zone riding/control?

The reason i asked you about break is, i had 2/3 times accidents with my scooter while cornering because of front break, my scooter was unstable and it sake me off the road, after that i never used front break. While cornering is it save to use front break on bike? I never run faster than 40km/h on scooter and I'm not planning to run faster than 60km/h on bike too.
