Right on....groovy intro. A shape/pattern I like for minor pentatonic scale is (using A minor starting on fifth fret of E string as an example) first finger on the A slide second finger to the third-C-8th fret, and then play C major pentatonic to the 6th-A on the D string-or any C major pentatonic shape. Or pinky on the A and then C major second finger on the 3rd fret.....gotta love the brother-sister 3rd and 6th.

Great lesson! Agreed 2 and b6 always either drink too much or just bring store bought cookies to the party- they can leave! I like choosing a root and then looking for the various intervals both above and BELOW.

I watched and listened to that opening jam about 5 times. Great lesson and reminder. Sometimes where I get lost is remembering the intervals and patterns when the root isn't the lowest note, like going further up the neck. Looks like I've given myself a little more homework ... Thanks, Ryan!

It's all about recognizing those patterns and keeping them organized on the fretboard. Glad you got something out of it!

Nice lesson. That's one of the finer points that separate guitar and bass guitar. I get away with pinky on minor 3rd interval, because I have big hands. But going for the third on the next string opens up more opportunities and is less stress on the fingers.

Side note… Minor pent is the same as the major pentatonic up a minor 3rd. C minor pent = Eb major pent.

To make any pentatonic scale. Just remove the tritone from the major scale to get a pentatonic. You've been teaching long enough to know this. Explain it that way. It's easier to hold in the mind longer and putting it on the fretboard. Ex. C major scale. Remove the tritone. B&F. A minor scale remove the tritone. F&B. Major is the 4 and 7. Minor is 2 and 6. Yes, these are tritones.
