San Marzano is my all-time favorite processing tomato. It is big, meaty, highly-productive, and holds well on the vine. I've raised Romas and Amish Paste, but for me, nothing can beat San Marzanos.

Exactly how we feel! I used to say that if I had to choose one tomato, it would be the Scotia tomato, but I think the San Marzano has taken the trophy.

We have houses in multiple countries. 9 years ago I planted some San Marzano tomatoes in the Philippines. They now look like some kind of crazy jungle bush but they give us ( and all of our neighbors) fresh tomatoes year round. It’s incredible. I’m from the US and we can only harvest them a few months before they die. And we have to replant every spring. But I can’t stand a tasteless commercial tomato. Which is why I always grow these wherever I am in the world

I freeze the entire tomato... it's super easy....

Hi again as I said I would.... My wife had ordered and we have received our seed.I'll be raising these next year.Roma have great taste but gardening isn't only a hobby I've very interesting to have a more productive tomato as Roma hasn't produced this year and 6a Mid Ohio had a summer drought the worst I've witnessed but we're better off then our neighbors as usual They are normally getting good or great reviews Thanks

Hopefully, as we meet more locals, we can build an offline community to go with our online one. Both can be so incredible in many ways. Thank you for watching and following along.

Hello! I’ve just happened upon your channel. I’ve got several San marzano plants that I started from seed. I see I’ll be needing WAY more trellising than I have. 😂 Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Can’t wait to binge your content.

They are monsters if given the chance. But they really are great producers and our go to tomato now for sure. Thank you so much for watching

I've learned a lot from this video. Thank you for sharing. I don't know anyone around me here in Georgia, everyone wants Roma's and that's not what I want for a good producers as I can , freeze and freeze dry a lot of my produce. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing- how do you save your seeds - conditions etc ., when do you start seedlings, planting etc.,? Need recipe for ketchup?

I have my seedlings started for these :) Excited! May I ask how many of the plants that you grew this past season? I love canning home stewed tomatoes.

I think we are going to have to switch completely over to the San Marzano from the Amish and Romas. Thanks again so much for the tomatos as well. They came in handy!!!

Glad the tomatoes were useful. If you were closer I could have sent more. I honestly love the San marzano, they are monsters and so prolific.

Question do you just wash and freeze your san Marzano?
@josdantas9739 Жыл бұрын
I love these for all the reasons you have mentioned - please share what trellis you will be using next year I have yet to find or make one sturdy enough for the weight of these
@HickorycroftFarm Жыл бұрын
We have this issue for sure, as you can see in this video. These plants are monsters when their foliage is at its peak. We are going to try something similar to our bean trellis. A six and a half foot wood structure with 3x7 foot wire from homedepot that is meant for reinforcing concrete (have no idea what it is actually called, lol) we dually have to see if it works better and do a video.

I've tried growing San Marzano tomatoes so often, howevr, my tomatoes are very small. Am I using a diffefent San Marzano culivar? What is the best rthe best variety to grow San Marzano's like the one's they grow in Italy? The one's in your video are 4 times as large as the ones I have tried growing. Any advice would be appreciared. I live in zone 3 in Canada. Thanks

I've never grown San Marzano but I have grown Amish Paste which are much larger than the Roma. Have you tried Amish Paste. I plan on trying San Marzano next year. Thanks for the heads up!
@HickorycroftFarm Жыл бұрын
We have grown the Amish paste, but I will admit, they were not a favorite for us. I used to grow Roma tomatoes, but replaced them with the San Marzano.

Juliette holds even better on the vine but San Marzano is larger, so more pulp and less skin. Juliette grills well.

Time to get another freezer just for tomato's. I gave up on Roma's long ago.

It is concerning as we have a lot to still get out of the garden and our freezer is living meal to meal.... paycheck to paycheck lol. I have to take stuff out to add anything.

My first year being successful with the san marzano variety. I’m impressed as well! I also planted the jersey devil. This one is also a fantastic producer. Have you ever tried this variety? If so what are your thoughts in comparison?

We have not tried the Jersey devil, but now we may have to lol. I am going to look them up. We love the San Marzano though for sure.

Is this the san marzano II or just the first one?
@HickorycroftFarm Жыл бұрын
To be 100% honest we are not sure which version of the San Marzano this is. Did some digging into it and it looks like there is also a San Marzano 3 as well.
@franko684310 ай бұрын
How tall does the plant get at its peak? Like 5ft?
@HickorycroftFarm9 ай бұрын
To be honest we are not sure. Five or six feet is a good guess, but we have never had them on a trellis tall enough to know for sure.
@littlehomesteadbythebeach Жыл бұрын
So, what do you want in exchange for some seeds? hehe! I'm seeing that the plants look pretty dead, are they more prone to disease? I mean, they do produce a ton but not rotating these would be a big no no I suppose?
@HickorycroftFarm Жыл бұрын
The plants always die back when I finally get around to tying them up.... we are going to try 7 foot trellis for them next year, but they are lush and green until I start tying them up.
@mylesfalconer9183 Жыл бұрын
Shouldn't you select the plant not the fruit? The fruit itself does not matter, unless all the fruit on a plant have the same characteristics... that said i would love to try some seeds!
@HickorycroftFarm Жыл бұрын
Very true its, I suppose we didn't' really make that to clear when we filmed this we were thinking more of what to look for as far as type in the fruit but you are right a plant that produces more consistently to type fruit is better to select from than just selecting from the "best" looking fruit from the bucket without knowing which plant it was on. Interestingly though we do seem to find the pointed bottom seems to be a plant by plant thing (i.e. a plant that produces the better to type shaped tomato tends to usually produce mostly or all that rather than the off type squished bottoms) but some of the oddest shaped fruits like the pear shaped example seem to be very randomly scattered amongst the plants (i.e., usually only one or two on the whole plant) which is what makes us think its a different kind of "defect" (have noticed it with some other varieties of tomato to). That is a good point though in selecting plants in general. We have been saving from this years San Marzano's so we can certainly hook you up with some seeds!

But how in the world you can grow tomatoes in the open and the birds are not having a free fiesta out of your tomatoes?
@HickorycroftFarm3 ай бұрын
To be honest we have never had issues with birds and tomatoes. None of our wild birds like them. The chickens will eat any that fall to the ground but the only bird we ever had that ate the tomato (plant and all) was domestic turkeys. They leveled an entire patch one year and in really quick order to!

@HickorycroftFarm Thanks for replaying my question. Here in the suburbs of Phoenix , I have been in a battle with birds pecking tomatoes and peppers ( even serranos and jalapeño), and also, they pick out the young corn and beans seedlings that just starting to sprouted out. Therefore, the most precious grops, I have them growing totally enclosed. It is hard here in the desert, my friends.
