Something to know about Herptivite: it uses beta carotene as the Vit A source, and you may also need to supplement with Repashy Vitamin A Plus- which uses preformed Vitamin A (Retinol.) There have been suggestions that some reptiles and amphibians cannot convert beta carotene to active Vit A. Vitamin A deficiency can cause serious issues in amphibians especially. I would suggest that anyone reading this do more research on Vit A.

Stich Erickson no problem! But is your heat good? Maybe they don’t have enough humidity in her enclosure? Or she just may not be hungry. Is she losing a lot of weight? If not I wouldn’t worry too too much. Try changing her humidity and give her a little warmer side. Also if you have a vet and your fat tailed gecko is showing signs of severe weight loss, or just is acting a lot more different I would definitely bring them to the vet. Keep a close eye on it and keep trying to get food in. They might me stressed too.

Since it's summer, be sure to collect dandelion greens from your yard. They're an excellent addition to insect gutload. I have found tortoise diet guides to be great for choosing appropriate vegetables to use in my gutloads. Collard greens, zucchini, carrots + green stems, bell peppers, cucumber, cilantro, parsley, celery, occasional pieces of apple, etc. Also, if you happen to keep any new caledonian gecko species, Repashy or Pangea cgd is well liked by crickets, roaches, mealworms.

I love how informative your channel is! I have a sick pied python right now. He has an RI. He's been on antibiotics for a week and a half. The vet is happy with his progress but he still has a lot of bubbling. It's really frustrating. I bought him from a not so nice breeder (I should have researched this guy before hand, so many negative comments about him after the fact). I knew that he was sick before I bought him. I mentioned it to the breeder and he had me convinced that may be he was just stressed out. If you have any other suggestions for me to care for my boy, please let me know. I watched your video on RI treatment. I just really want more reassurance that he will be ok.
@amy71895 жыл бұрын
Emily, could you do a video on the different care expenses of different reptiles? I know there are a lot of factors that should be considered when figuring out which pets you can keep, but I've heard quite a few stories where people have chosen pets based on the initial purchase price, yet then it turned out they had a lot of expensive care requirements; eg. they'd grow HUGE so big enclosures and more food was required than initially thought, or people buy turtles without realising they need basking lights, sometimes the pets live a lot longer than people realise (such as large parrots) so the cost of feeding and toys etc. adds up over time - sometimes there are pets which seem "cool" so people buy them only to realise vet's fees are massive because they have to go to specialists when stuff goes wrong. Thank you for another video, I just come along for the little cuties (my favourites in this video were the bearded anoles and the garter/ribbon snake nomming on her fish meal, OOH and the cute gecko coz geckos own my soul haha...) I don't have any reptiles of my own so this is the closest I can get for now ^-^'

Thank you so much for addressing this topic! I had questions about it and had previously had to ask other monitor keepers, but still felt like I didn't get it completely. I didn't understand at first if you are using UVB that I shouldn't use the calcium with D3. I also initially didn't realize I also needed the multivitamin. And now I understand why those were separate! And I understand more about vitamins! I have the Herptivite too because that was what was recommended to me. I have ReptiCalcium with and without D3. With my savannah monitor, I'm still not sure how to know for sure I'm getting correct levels of everything, so I try to just rotate his vitamins and supplements. I do have UVB in his cage, and I try to take him outside a couple times a week. But he does also often wander my back room and sleep in various other places, which means he's not always basking in his UVB. I tend to always dust his insects with calcium, and dust with multivitamins on occasion. I don't worry about it as much when I'm feeding him other whole prey. I feel like I should occasionally use the calcium with D3 just in case he isn't getting quite enough light? I really don't know how much is enough. His food categories are insects, seafood, um mammals I guess, and eggs. I try to focus on insects as a primary (crickets and superworms mostly. I'm working on getting discoid roaches going since I can't do dubias in FL, but the petshop doesn't always have them in and the batch I got at the reptile expo aren't old enough yet.) He loves seafood so he gets a variety of large raw whole shrimp, whole small fish, live crawfish, and other pieces of raw fish or shrimp. I know about the Thiaminase thing so I try to avoid too much of that. I on occasion feed him mice, chicken chicks, or quail chicks (all frozen thawed- he is excellent if my ball python decides not to eat, but she has been a good eater.) Finally I do the occasional raw quail egg or hardboiled chicken egg pieces (I like to have hardboiled eggs for breakfast, so I'll share a bite with him. I figure the shell is also good for his calcium levels.) He generally eats all of these things with gusto, although I'd say mice and chicks are at the top, and seafood is second. I am totally open to other suggestions for better feeding. I've been winging it based on how he looks and how active he is as to how often and how much he gets fed.

Good video but there are a few points that need to be clarified. Leopard geckos are not nocturnal, they are crepuscular. They benefit from low levels of UVB that will replicate how they bask at dusk. Look into the Arcadia shade dweller UVB kit.

The weird thing is, i have never given my Corn Snake vitamins, you would think she would be ill but in fact the opposite is true, her scales are smooth as silk and shes never had any health issues except when i first got her, but that was from lack of feeding as a hatch-ling and she had escaped to find her own foods. And whats even better is shes a Snow white side, and she grew, oh boy did she grow, at measurement last time i took her to the vet for a check up she was 5"8 inches in length which is long for a Corn. he asked if i used vitamins and i said no and he said that she didn't need them as she was in good health and extremely active, she loved the attention from the vet.
