Negative! I open my clibface and flop from just about anywhere. Bunker, hill, etc. as long as there's no tree right above you or the green you can hit the shot. Weight on your front foot, open the face up, cock your wrists back, full swing nice and steady. It should feel as if you're trying to cut under the ball in a way. Just keep practicing.

Open club face advice is very situational. If you're playing a shitty muni where the turf is tough, your club's bounce will cause you to blade the ball because open face raises the club's front edge. More chipping practice is what's ultimately going to fix anyone's chipping.

There is a tool for every job. He gave you a tool that does a specific job, which is creating more speed with an open face. There are far too many variables in golf, which is why you need many tools. I do agree with you 1,000%. Practice is what makes you a better chipper in general. Its so sad. Im usually on the practice green way longer than people are on the driving range haha and almost no one ever practices chipping or putting. l enjoy practicing chipping, its the part of the game I spend the most time practicing and it shows. Since I was 8 (20 years ago), my absolute favorite and most practiced part of golf is chipping and the approach. My favorite club in the bag is my 60 with low bounce and a high toe. I can comfortably use it from 60 yards all the way to the fringe, in the rough, sand, and rain. I think it's just a matter of practice to understand the feel and comfort to not blade the ball on a bad lie. It really all comes down to the club face direction, close it up and you can get those more difficult lies more easily. Open it up and you get that loft, spin, and control on the better lies
@Zellieth
@Zellieth 5 ай бұрын
@@Willy-the-Fire-Putter-Outter I agree with a low bounce 60 but most people end up with like a 14 bounce 60 because that's what's typically sold online and in stores.

That's part of why I always try to take a few practice swings before chipping, obviously to dial in the swing I want to use, but also to find out how the turf is going to react to my clubhead in that particular lie. If my club catches hard, I know I have to be careful hitting it fat and adjust accordingly.

It's still much easier than learning the full swing of a typical 30 hcpper, most are just too lazy to spend even a small amount of time learning to chip, and too afraid of looking foolish during a golf round. @@l0rdkeithingt0nevery change you make will temporarily make you worse, and better in the long term. I'm an 11 hcp and I was shooting much lower than that in non qualifying competition over winter (because of lift and place these scores didn't count towards hcp) I've made some swing changes a month or so again and instead of shooting 74-78 I started shooting high 80s and even a few mid 90s, but when I swing with purpose and intent with the new changes, it feels much better. I'm definitely hitting shots I couldn't hit 2 months ago, and today I shot 80 again, with a lot of very accurate irons from the changes. That's golf and the only way of improving. Point being: you will rarely ever see instant improvement and will most likely see a temporary regression, you have to stick with it and it will pay off. Being able to confidently chip from green side to leave tap ins all the time is like a golf hack (and I can do this, partly why I can sometimes shoot much lower than my hcp)

For recreational golfers I wouldn't recommend it. There are too many variables that most likely will lead to blading the ball. Play around with 7 iron down to Gap wedge. Play ball back of stance toward back foot toe or behind. Press club foward playing the ball closer to the hosel and just take a putting stroke. Play around with close face to neutral face. Too much of an open face with this technique will cause a hosel ball. It is an easier technique with very little movement. Do not let your wrist hinge at all. Keep your hands pressed forward the entire stroke.

I get what you’re trying to say… but the acceleration you have due to gravity is the same irrespective of the length of your backswing. True- open face when chipping does lead to better chipping.... yet practice is key. For instance, you really need to experiment with your weight in your stance. On tighter lies I have found its vital to place more weight forward which slightly keeps the leading edge down and hence avoiding those thin or skulled shots. Getting this feel is important when using an open face on tight lies. Happy practice and experimenting.

A chip is a ‘one lever’ swing with no wrist hinge which results in a low trajectory shot. When wrist hinges it becomes a ‘dual lever’ action called a ‘pitch’ shot to differentiate it from the no hinge ‘chip’ and called a ‘lob’ when the face is opened to produce a more vertical trajectory.

His advice is intended for people who have a ton of time to devote to practice. Bad, really bad advice for the casual player. That's the big problem for most of the youtube teachers. They don't know who the real audience is...

I actually have found better success using a forward shaft lean on all my chips. It closes the club face by maybe 2-3 degrees, but it ensures even the bottom of my club face is completely flush with the ball, so what might normally be hit thin is still hit well. This might apply at the top end, but i’m a 17 handicap and this trick really helped take me from low 20s to that number.

I only use a 56° and typically leave the face open and do full swings like this. I flop it often. Great for putting spin on the ball and getting it to sit on the green.

Open face and come slightly outside in swing and steeper to create more spin to stop the ball because the greens are really fast on the pga tour. Do you really wanna do that at your local municipal golf course where the green is slow?

If your trying to put that leading edge just beneath the equator of the valley, and can do it consistently, then good on you 👍 But most can't.. I'd rather come in with a shallow and let the flange keep the club from digging. This can allow you to extend the bottom of your ark, and make it much much easier under pressure even from very thin lies.

This is how I love to chip. I’m usually better at short flip shot than a chip and run lol. You get the club head to move fast through the ball but without power

The best chipper use what makes the most sense. Tow down with a closed face hit it like a put is what a lot of pros do and what most amateurs should be doing.

The only problem is when golfers who aren’t very good do this is they end up not hitting it hard enough and the ball going 2 yards. If you do this you gotta make sure you make a committed swing

Chipping is the strongest part of my game, unless im hitting a full 58 and need all its yardage the face is open. I also chip off my front foot to get a little more loft to the ball

People need to know this is information if you're u are a 10 handicap or less. If you are struggling with chipping and over 10 handicap there are probably a million things you could work on more than opening the face. But I usually play with my face a little open when I chip allows more soft hands as well.

Be sure to use the bounce with an open face. To produce an extra soft shot, play the shot with no shaft lean at all at adress. 👍

If you set it down itself, the bottom of the blade is designed to be open, as opposed to an iron where you line up the face for the shot. But fair warning, this will cause most Amateurs to pork one 15-35 yards over the green 🤣

Chipping with a muddy club will help take spin off the ball so it rolls out better.

Chipping by definition is a lofted shot. Otherwise you're pitching aren't you? I think you're missing the whole point, which is chipping vs pitching. But anyways, an open face does not allow speed, it requires speed. The choice is between speed control and face squaring control. So what are you best at?

The ball doesn't roll out as much but why? Fast green, slow green, wet green, dry maintained greens etc... starting with 3 basic chip fundamentals would be a better place to begin. Rule of 12 practice for hand eye coordination. Then downhill uphill practice body positioning.

As a physicist, his understanding/explanation of what's going on isn't quite right. But the conclusion is correct. The more you exert yourself, the less control you have in general. So a lot of golf is being as efficient as possible and being fit, so that you exert as little as possible. Here, the longer backswing allows you to use gravity and accelerate over a longer time, which requires less force, and allows more control as a result
