Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I read last year that intercropping can help prevent certain plants from being infested with insects, but not because they can’t “smell” their target plant, or because they “hate” the other plant. Before certain flying insects lay eggs on plants that their offspring will be able to eat, they land on a few different places in a small area. If they don’t land on a target plant enough times in a row, they won’t settle down there and lay eggs. So the companion plants in the area could be said to distract or confuse the insects.

I inter crop with zinnias, sunflowers and nasturtium. I plant them on the outside borders. My garden is only 4 1/2 ‘ wide by about 15’. Thanks again for all of the great information - I’ll be using some of your suggestions, especially crop rotation. Looking forward to yummy veggies and beautiful flowers 🥳

I've had good luck using tall marigolds as a trap crop for Japanese beetles. It was border cropping vs intercropping, but it worked well. The beetles got to the border of the garden and no further due to their fascination with the marigolds. Iowa Zone 5a.

Doing red runner beans (a pole bean) behind my veggies that need pollinators seem to be a great attraction. Also prolific. It is a string bean so may not be everyone's choice for the pods.

I like to intercrop with companion plants. Space is a premium in my garden, so every patch of dirt needs to have a job. I have a couple of companion planting tables that I reference when planning my small garden for the season.

Two years ago I did the three sisters in a small area in my garden as a great... but only used 2 of the sisters: corn and beans. I hated it! It was hard to harvest the beans and it was messy looking. That style was not for me. But I do both intercrop and companion plant as best as I can.
@caseykish6763
@caseykish6763 Жыл бұрын
Most people don’t understand the three sisters concept truly. You plant a certain plant at different cardinal directions and at different times for success. It’s not as easy as just growing them together unfortunately

Yep, always pick up a tip or two from you. So, since I have been mostly container gardening, to optimize space use, I have been companion planting almost everything. Do alliums actually deter pests? IDK; I have onions and garlic around bananas, and something has been eating the alliums. Go figure. Basil and oregano around tomatoes is simply for convenience because there are so many ways to eat them together, even as a garden snack. The line of whether I am intercropping blurs; the herbs get cycled out when they get tired, and so do the tomatoes (succession by rooting suckers). The really short-lived crops like lettuce or coriander actually get 'interplanted' by setting their smaller container inside the larger to enjoy a little dappled shade thrown by the larger plant, and share watering and fertilizing times. Now I have to see if I can get the trap cropping thing going, but have the darnedest time growing nasturtiums, so need something else to attract aphids in Florida zone 9B.

Thanks for defining the differences. I like Basil with Tomatoes and Trailing Nasturtiums with winter squash. Nasturtiums, in my opinion, don't combat squash bugs or vine bores. I've tried it for years with no success. But, I plant them together anyway because I think they add beauty to my squash bed. Enjoyed, take care!

I havent gotten into companion planting. But this year I placed some small totes under a trellis to see if the cucumbers do better with more room for roots. But there was a lot of room left over. So I planted some Marigold seeds on the outer edge of the totes. I dont think they will repel pests, but they are fantastic at attracting pollinators. Hopefully they will help cucumber production and melons on a trellis nearby.

I use borage as a trap crop and pollenator attractor. I leave it in place even when it is infested with aphids because that much prey attracts predatory insects.

I underestimated trap crops at first, but last year when I had planted turnips, kale, and tomatoes near each other, I noticed an interesting effect. When the flea beetles descended on my yard, they all went for the turnip leaves, particularly on one plant. The leaves that were once pristine and juicy suddenly looked like lace. When I decided to harvest that turnip, they went to the other turnips. The kale 3 feet away was still largely untouched. The tomato plants had no visible damage. This year, you can bet I planted turnips again. Your mileage may vary, as I can’t predict the preferences of your local bugs, but I fully recommend observing the behaviour of insects in your yard to see how to lure them away from your prized crops.

Arugula became my inadvertent trap crop, that and corn salad. I’ve all but given up on leafy stuff. We are so overrun with earwigs here, I can’t stand the look of them anymore and eating lettuce they’ve infested churns my stomach so I may stick to growing lettuce indoors only and just keep arugula as my trap.
